Inventory of the non‐native flora of Italy

2009

In this paper we present a comprehensive inventory of the non‐native vascular flora of Italy, which was produced within the project “A survey of the Italian non‐native flora”, funded by the Italian Ministry for the Environment. Previously published floristic accounts were the main source of information. Historical records were critically revised and integrated with recent literature, data from herbaria and some unpublished information, so as to obtain a complete, up‐to‐date catalogue of the non‐native vascular plant species that occur spontaneously in Italy. The inventory lists 1023 non‐native species and subspecies, which account for 13.4% of all the Italian flora. The Italian non‐native f…

La pintura de flores de Miguel Parra (1780-1846)

2013

Although Miguel Parra Abril (Valencia, 1780-Madrid, 1846) is one of the most important Valencian School painters of floral still lifes, this aspect of his work remains little known. The present article addresses this oversight in two ways. First, by offering an overview of his oeuvre as a painter of floral subjects from his student days at the Fine Arts Academy of Valencia through his mature works. Second, by analyzing two heretofore-unpublished floral compositions in relation to his more familiar works, particularly those located in private collections until recent years.Aunque Miguel Parra Abril (Valencia, 1780-Madrid, 1846) es uno de los pintores de flores más importantes de la Escuela v…

Health and disease imprinted in the time variability of the human microbiome

2015

Human microbiota plays an important role in determining changes from health to disease. Increasing research activity is dedicated to understand its diversity and variability. We analyse 16S rRNA and whole genome sequencing (WGS) data from the gut microbiota of 97 individuals monitored in time. Temporal fluctuations in the microbiome reveal significant differences due to factors that affect the microbiota such as dietary changes, antibiotic intake, early gut development or disease. Here we show that a fluctuation scaling law describes the temporal variability of the system and that a noise-induced phase transition is central in the route to disease. The universal law distinguishes healthy fr…

Saccharomyces Yeasts I

2011

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the microbiological aspects of saccharomyces yeasts in wine production. Yeasts, which play a central role in the winemaking process, are unicellular fungi that reproduce by budding. Most yeast belongs to the phylum Ascomycota on the basis of their sexual development. The selection of wine yeasts with specific genetic markers provides a system for the precise monitoring of the growth of particular strains during fermentation. Analyses of this type have shown that fermentation is driven mainly by inoculated yeasts, although these sometimes become only partially established. The growth of the natural flora is not completely suppressed during the initial…

Comparative efficacy of Zataria multiflora Boiss., Origanum compactum and Eugenia caryophyllus essential oils against E. coli O157:H7, feline caliciv…

2013

Abstract Ready-to-eat salads using baby-leaf and multi-leaf mixes are one of the most promising developments in the fresh-cut food industry. There is great interest in developing novel decontamination treatments, which are both safe for consumers and more efficient against foodborne pathogens. In this study, emulsions of essential oils (EOs) from Origanum compactum (oregano), Eugenia caryophyllus (clove), and Zataria multiflora Boiss (zataria) were applied by spray (0.8 ml) after the sanitizing washing step. The aim was to investigate their ability to control the growth of potentially cross-contaminating pathogens and endogenous microbiota in commercial baby leaves, processed in a fresh-cut…

Chemical and biological study of saponins isolated from three malagasy species belonging to Caryophyllaceae, Pittosporaceae and Solanaceae families

2013

This thesis was carried out in the Laboratory of Pharmacognosy, in the Pharmacy section of the University of Burgundy. The principal theme of this laboratory is the research of natural compounds from tropical biodiversity, mainly saponins. In this context, the study of Malagasy plants, Polycarpaea corymbosa Lamk. (CARYOPHYLLACEAE), Pittosporum verticillatum Bojer subsp. verticillatum (PITTOSPORACEAE), Solanum incanum L. and S. heteracanthum Dunal. (SOLANACEAE) led to the isolation of fifteen natural glycosides by column chromatography, medium pressure liquid chromatography, flash chromatography, and vacuum liquid chromatography. The structures were elucidated mainly by the use of spectrosco…
