Modeling belowground water table fluctuations in the Everglades

2010

Humid lands, such as riparian zones, peatlands, and unsubmerged wetlands, are considered among the most biologically diverse of all ecosystems, providing a bountiful habitat for a large number of plant and animal species. In such ecosystems, the water table dynamics play a key role in major ecohydrological processes. The aim of the present study is to test with field data a recent analytical model for the estimation of the long‐term probability distribution of the belowground water table position in groundwater‐dependent environments. This model accounts for stochastic rainfall and processes such as infiltration, root water uptake, water flow from/to an external water body, and capillary fl…

Correlated Event-by-Event Fluctuations of Flow Harmonics in Pb-Pb Collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV

2016

We report the measurements of correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of amplitudes of anisotropic flow harmonics in nucleus-nucleus collisions, obtained for the first time using a new analysis method based on multiparticle cumulants in mixed harmonics. This novel method is robust against systematic biases originating from nonflow effects and by construction any dependence on symmetry planes is eliminated. We demonstrate that correlations of flow harmonics exhibit a better sensitivity to medium properties than the individual flow harmonics. The new measurements are performed in Pb-Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of √=2.76  TeV sNN p ¼ 2.76 TeV by the ALI…

Central limit theorem for bifurcating Markov chains under L 2 -ergodic conditions

2021

Bifurcating Markov chains (BMC) are Markov chains indexed by a full binary tree representing the evolution of a trait along a population where each individual has two children. We provide a central limit theorem for additive functionals of BMC under L 2-ergodic conditions with three different regimes. This completes the pointwise approach developed in a previous work. As application, we study the elementary case of symmetric bifurcating autoregressive process, which justify the non-trivial hypothesis considered on the kernel transition of the BMC. We illustrate in this example the phase transition observed in the fluctuations.

Relative particle yield fluctuations in Pb--Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV

2019

First results on K/π, p/π and K/p fluctuations are obtained with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC as a function of centrality in Pb–Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV. The observable νdyn, which is defined in terms of the moments of particle multiplicity distributions, is used to quantify the magnitude of dynamical fluctuations of relative particle yields and also provides insight into the correlation between particle pairs. This study is based on a novel experimental technique, called the Identity Method, which allows one to measure the moments of multiplicity distributions in case of incomplete particle identification. The results for p/π show a change of sign in νdyn from positive to neg…

Hydration dependence of myoglobin dynamics studied with elastic neutron scattering, differential scanning calorimetry and broadband dielectric spectr…

2014

In this work we present a thorough investigation of the hydration dependence of myoglobin dynamics. The study is performed on D2O-hydrated protein powders in the hydration range 0<h<0.5 (h≡gr[D2O]/gr[protein]) and in the temperature range 20-300K. The protein equilibrium fluctuations are investigated with Elastic Neutron Scattering using the spectrometer IN13 at ILL (Grenoble), while the relaxations of the protein + hydration water system are investigated with Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy; finally, Differential Scanning Calorimetry is used to obtain a thermodynamic description of the system. The effect of increasing hydration is to speed up the relaxations of the myoglobin + hydration …

Analiza anatomiczna drewna reliktowej sosny zwyczajnej z Sokolicy

2021

The work describes anatomical analysis of the wood from a relict Pinus sylvestris L. performed to determine its characteristics. Transverse ca. 20 μm thick sections were prepared with a core-microtome and observed in bright-field microscopy. Observations of tangential sections were performed in epi-fluorescence. The xylem of the relict pine showed many narrow growth rings. The occurrence of i.a. discontinuous tree rings, light rings and intraannual density fluctuations was stated. It can be expected that specific properties of the wood of the studied pine are the result of harsh growing conditions – limited water availability at the top of Sokolica. In addition, a wide range of factors affe…

IMPORTANCIA DE LAS PERTURBACIONES EXTERNAS EN LA ECONOMÍA ESPAÑOLA TRAS LA INTEGRACIÓN: ¿TAMAÑO DEL SHOCK O GRADO DE RESPUESTA?

2005

This paper analyses whether the impact of European shocks in the Spanisheconomy has increased after the entry of Spain in the European Community. UsingVAR models, we try to disentangle whether the change in the importance of Europe isdue to a change in the size of the shocks or in the propagation effects. The results showsthat after 1986, despite the decrease in the size of European shocks, their impact on theSpanish business cycle has increases due to a larger sensitivity of the Spanish economyto these shocks. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar si ha aumentado la influencia de los shocks europeos en la economía española tras el proceso de integración en Europa, distinguiendo si los ca…

Does Labor Respond to Cyclical Fluctuations? The Case of Italy

2006

The aim of this paper is to analyse whether labour mobility is likely to act as a sufficient adjustment mechanism in the face of asymmetric shocks in Italy. In particular, the paper examines if the interregional migration responds, among other factors, also to the GDP's regional cyclical component. The results show that interregional labour mobility appears to respond adequately to current and past cyclical fluctuations.

A Comparative Analysis in the Field of the Economic Exposure to Currency Risk

2017

Currency fluctuations became a daily habit of nowadays financial markets and their impact canbe felt in all companies, from the mere domestic ones to the transnational corporations withintricate businesses around the world. Our paper investigates the economic exposure to currencyrisk for a number of 20 companies from Romania and Croatia, between 2006 and 2011, on a shorttermand long-term perspective. The results picture a different image regarding these companies’exposure either to the Euro and the US dollar. We find that Romanian companies are moreexposed to unexpected changes in the value of their national currency against both the Euro andthe US dollar compared to Croatian companies, wit…

Multiphoton Absorption of Myoglobin Nitric-Oxide complex: Relaxation by D-NEMD of a Stationary State

2012

ABSTRACT: The photodissociation and geminate recombination of nitric oxide in myoglobin, under continuous illumination, is modeled computationally. The relaxation of the photon energy into the protein matrix is also considered in a single simulation scheme that mimics a complete experimental setup. The dynamic approach to non-equilibrium molecular dynamics is used, starting from a steady state, to compute its relaxation to equilibrium. Simulations are conducted for the native form of sperm whale myoglobin and for two other mutants, V68W and L29F, illustrating a fair diversity of spatial and temporal geminate recombination processes. Energy flow to the heme and immediate protein environment …
