Hardening and long-range stress formation in lithium fluoride induced by energetic ions

2003

Abstract LiF crystals were irradiated with Au, Pb, Bi and S ions in the energy range 400–2300 MeV and studied by means of Vickers microindentation. Remarkable hardening effects are observed which depend on the applied fluence and ion species, and correlate with the ion energy loss along the ion path. Structural investigations reveal irradiation-induced stress extending deep into the adjacent non-irradiated crystal and leading to the formation of dislocations. X-ray diffraction measurements of the irradiated crystals show a decrease of the lattice constant indicating the presence of internal stress.

ESR response of watch glasses to neutron irradiation

2012

Abstract In this paper we report the results of the electron spin resonance (ESR) study of the radiation-induced signal of watch glasses exposed to neutrons. This work extends the series of analyses of the response of watch glasses to various radiation beams which our research group is carrying out for possible applications in retrospective dosimetry. We have considered fluences up to about 3 × 1011 cm−2. We evaluated the signal fading and we found that in the first hours after exposure the signal rapidly decreases. After about 1000 h, it decreases much more slowly. The signal was reduced by about 25% in about 5 months. The radiation induced signal is found to be linearly dependent on neutr…

Neutron irradiation influence on magnesium aluminium spinel inversion

2002

Abstract Grown by the Verneuil method MgO · nAl2O3 single crystals and natural spinel crystal have been studied using X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence spectra. The fast neutron irradiation of magnesium aluminium spinel leads to the lattice parameter decrease. The bond lengths of Mg–O and Al–O vary with the u-parameter and the lattice parameter. On the other hand, the bond lengths are related with the inversion parameter. Using changes of the lattice parameter during irradiation we have calculated the inversion parameter, which is 15–20%. In the luminescence spectra, the fast neutron radiation (fluence 1016 cm−2) produces an increase in the intensity ratio of the N- to R-lines by 5–20…

Lithography exposure characteristics of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) for carbon, helium and hydrogen ions

2012

Abstract Poly(methyl methacrylate) is a common polymer used as a lithographic resist for all forms of particle (photon, ion and electron) beam writing. Faithful lithographic reproduction requires that the exposure dose, Θ, lies in the window Θ 0 ⩽ Θ Θ × 0 , where Θ 0 and Θ × 0 represent the clearing and cross-linking onset doses, respectively. In this work we have used the programmable proximity aperture ion beam lithography systems in Chiang Mai and Jyvaskyla to determine the exposure characteristics in terms of fluence for 2 MeV protons, 3 MeV 4 He 2 + and 6 MeV 12 C 3 + ions, respectively. After exposure the samples were developed in 7:3 by volume propan-2-ol:de-ionised water mixture. At…

Evaluation of Distributed OFDR-Based Sensing Performance in Mixed Neutron/Gamma Radiation Environments

2017

We report the study of a radiation resistant single mode optical fiber doped with fluorine exposed to mixed neutron and $\gamma $ -radiation up to $10^{17}$ n/cm2 fluence and >2 MGy dose to evaluate its performances when used as the sensing element of a distributed Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR). The use of complementary spectroscopic techniques highlights some differences between the responses of solely $\gamma $ -radiation (10 MGy) or mixed neutron and $\gamma $ ( $10^{17}$ n/cm $^{2}+>2$ MGy) irradiated samples. Those differences are linked to the defect generation rather than to structural changes of the ${a}$ -SiO2 host matrix. We show that a modification of the refracti…

Development of procedures for programmable proximity aperture lithography

2013

Abstract Programmable proximity aperture lithography (PPAL) with MeV ions has been used in Jyvaskyla and Chiang Mai universities for a number of years. Here we describe a number of innovations and procedures that have been incorporated into the LabView-based software. The basic operation involves the coordination of the beam blanker and five motor-actuated translators with high accuracy, close to the minimum step size with proper anti-collision algorithms. By using special approaches, such writing calibration patterns, linearisation of position and careful backlash correction the absolute accuracy of the aperture size and position, can be improved beyond the standard afforded by the repeata…

NMR relaxometry measurements of Fricke gel dosimeters exposed to neutrons

2014

Fricke infused gel matrices offer several features making them suitable for dosimetric applications; among the set here are tissue equivalence, low cost and ease of preparation. Their nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation properties can be used as a radiation detector for the dosimetry of beams used in cancer therapy. In recent years neutron capture therapy has been resumed for the treatment of various types of cancer and it requires three-dimensional mapping of the neutron fields. In this work, we investigated this particular application through NMR relaxometry and MR imaging of Fricke gels exposed to neutrons. We analyzed both the R1 and R2 relaxation rates, which relate to the long…

Improvement of ESR dosimetry for thermal neutron beams through the addition of gadolinium.

2007

In this paper, the addition of gadolinium is proposed as a useful tool to enhance the electron spin resonance (ESR) sensitivity of organic compounds to thermal neutrons. The target of this work is the detection, through the ESR technique, of the thermal neutron fluence in a mixed field of photons and neutrons. Gadolinium was chosen because it has a very high capture cross section to thermal neutrons; its nuclear reaction with thermal neutrons induces complex inner shell transitions that generate, besides other particles, Auger electrons, which in turn release their energy in the neighborhood (only several nanometers) of the place of reaction. Gadolinium was added to two organic molecules: a…

<title>Study of color centers in optical fibers to be used for ITER plasma diagnostics</title>

2007

ABSTRACT The paper presents a comparative study, by off-line measurements of the irradiation induced optical attenuation in several large diameter (600 µm) optical fibers subjected to gamma-rays and neutron irradiation. The optical fiber samples fall into two categories: optical fibers with an enhanced UV transmission (high OH content core) and solarization resistant optical fibers. The irradiation conditions were as follows: a) gamma irradiation at a 60 Co source, with a dose rate of 0.33 kGy/h +/- 5%, up to the maximum total irradiation dose of 313 kGy; b) neutron irradiation (mean energy 5.2 MeV) using a deuteron beam (13 MeV) and a thick beryllium target, for a total fluence of 6x10 12 …

From university to working life: mentoring as a pedagogical challenge

2007

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to scrutinize the transition from university to working life through different theoretical approaches. Inspired by Barnett the paper also asks: What is it to learn for an unknown future? According to Bartlett neither knowledge nor skills are sufficient to enable success in the contemporary world. What is needed are certain kinds of human qualities and dispositions. The paper seeks to introduce two examples that help us to analyse the phenomenon from the perspectives of higher education and working life.Design/methodology/approachThe data consists of an interview on pedagogical practices in actor training and of group mentoring discussions in a teacher com…
