Noise influence on correlated activities in a modular neuronal network: From synapses to functional connectivity

In this work we propose taking noise into account when modeling the neuronal activity in a correlation-based type network. Volume transmission effects on connectivity are considered. As a result, an individual module can be set in an "activated" state via noise produced by the remaining modules. The stochastic approach could provide a new insight into the relation between functional and anatomical connectivity.

AbstractHigh-quality crystalline Si1-xGex (x=0.10 and 0.25) alloys were implanted with 70 keV Er+ ions at temperatures of 350°C and 550°C to a fluence of 1015 cm−2. In-situ Rutherford backscattering/channeling (RBS) analysis supplemented with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that as-implanted alloys were in form of ternary solid solutions with a peak Er concentration of 1 at.% without any trace of Er-Si or Er-Ge precipitation.In the samples implanted at 350°C Er atoms were found to be distributed randomly in the amorphous host matrix. Modification of LiF structure by irradiation with swift heavy ions under oblique incidence

The structural modifications of LiF irradiated with swift heavy ions under oblique angles have been investigated using AFM, SEM, chemical etching, nanoindentation and optical absorption spectroscopy. LiF crystals were irradiated under incidence angles of 30 and 70 degrees with 2.2 GeV Au (fluence 57?l011 ions-cm2) and 150 MeV Kr ions (fluence 1012?1014 ions?cm?2). Structural study on sample cross-sections shows that two damage regions ? (1) nanostructured zone and (2) dislocation ? rich zone, which are typical for irradiations at normal incidence, appear also in samples irradiated under oblique angles. Ion-induced reduction of dislocation mobility in LiF crystals irradiated with swift heavy (U) and light (Ni) ions of a specific energy of 11 MeV per nucleon at fluences between 106 and 1011 ions/cm2 was studied. The arm length of dislocation rosettes produced by indentation on (100) irradiated surface was measured. It has been found that in the case of heavy ions the threshold fluence (106 ions/cm2) for impeding of dislocation arms is about 3 orders of magnitude lower than that for light ions. The results indicate that ion-induced defect aggregates play the dominating role in the impeding of dislocations. Abstract This paper provides a close reading of Paul Farley’s 160-line poem, “Thorns.” The poem is read in dialogue with William Wordsworth’s celebrated Romantic ballad “The Thorn.” Special attention is given to Farley’s treatment of memory and metaphor: It is shown how the first, exploratory part of the poem elaborates upon the interdependent nature of memory and metaphor, while the second part uses a more regulated form of imagery in its evocation of a generational memory linked to a particular place and time (the working-class Liverpool of the 1960s and 1970s). Experimental studies find a strong influence of nonverbal signals on the evaluation of political candidates when raters are asked to judge unknown candidates from short-duration exposures. Yet when viewers are exposed to candidates’ verbal and nonverbal communication in a more naturally occurring context, the presence of verbal communication can make the influence of nonverbal communication seem attenuated. Abstract In this article, I analyze the expression of stance in YouTube comments responding to a speech by Greta Thunberg addressing the 2019 United Nations Climate Action Summit. I use quantitative and qualitative analysis of explicit stance features (including attitude markers, boosters, hedges, self-mentions, and reader addresses) in order to characterize the voice type that commenters construe and examine how this voice type potentially functions as a tool for social influence. Objective: To explore the literature focusing on cultural influences in the diagnosis of adult ADHD and respective societal burden. Method: A review of the literature over the past 10 years was performed using OVID. Results: Although numerous articles focused on diagnosis and burden of adult ADHD, few focused on cultural factors influencing diagnosis. Like other mental health disorders, cultural and social perspectives contribute to our understanding of adult ADHD and may play a significant role in the diagnosis and varying acceptance of the condition.
