Physical behavior and morphology of biaxially rolled low-density polyethyleneX
1989
Abstract Biaxial rolling was carried out on low-density polyethylene, and the rolled samples were studied using various techniques. Scanning electron microscopy and analysis of transport properties were used to obtain structural information, which was correlated to thermomechanical and dynamic-mechanical behavior. Results indicate that the initial morphology is destroyed by rolling and that clumps of molecules, like fibrils, are generated parallel to the rolling plane. The molecular orientation in the plane is mainly radial, with some reinforcement, particularly at high rolling degree, along axes diagonal with respect to the rolling directions. The rolling drastically reduces the molecular …
Multiphysical modeling of dissimilar welding via interlayer
2011
Abstract A multiphysical finite element modeling of dissimilar welding via interlayer material was proposed. A 2D model including heat transfer, fluid flow and level set problems allowed to simulate the morphology and the composition of melted zone in horizontal plane. The calculated thickness of melted interlayer was used as a main criterion for the choice of optimal welding conditions, when the chemical interaction between the joined materials must be avoided. A 1D diffusion model at the limit of melted zone allowed estimating the length and the composition of diffusion layer between one of the materials and the interlayer basing on previously calculated local temperature gradient. The si…
Switching direction of laterally ordered monolayers induced by transfer instability
2007
Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers may show nanoscopic periodic patterns parallel and/or perpendicular to the transfer direction. The experimental findings are interpreted by a nonequilibrium model based on the stability of surfactant concentration and film thickness coupled fluctuations near the meniscus of a surfactant-covered receding thin film. In the high and low transfer speed limits, periodic fluctuations of the fluid subphase thickness, respectively perpendicular and parallel to the transfer, are selected. A qualitative phase diagram shows how transfer speed and film density manage the pattern shape.
On the thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cassette body cooling circuit equipped with a liner
2020
Abstract In the framework of the Work Package DIV 1 - “Divertor Cassette Design and Integration” of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been jointly carried out by University of Palermo and ENEA to investigate the steady-state thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cassette cooling system. The research activity has been focussed onto the most recent design of the Cassette Body (CB) cooling circuit, consistent with the DEMO baseline 2017 and equipped with a liner, whose main function is to protect the underlying vacuum pump CB opening from plasma radiation. The research campaign has been carried out following a theoretical-computational approach based on the finite vo…

2021
Abstract In the framework of the Work Package DIV 1 – “Divertor Cassette Design and Integration” of the EUROfusion action, a research campaign has been jointly carried out by University of Palermo and ENEA to investigate the steady-state thermal-hydraulic performances of the DEMO divertor cassette cooling system. The research activity has been focussed onto the most recent design of the Cassette Body (CB) cooling circuit, consistent with the DEMO baseline 2017 and equipped with a liner and two Reflector Plates (RPs), whose main functions are to protect the underlying vacuum pump hole from the radiation arising from plasma and shield the PFCs inlet distributors, respectively. The research ca…
Effective slippage on superhydrophobic trapezoidal grooves
2013
We study the effective slippage on superhydrophobic grooves with trapezoidal cross-sections of various geometries (including the limiting cases of triangles and rectangular stripes), by using two complementary approaches. First, dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations of a flow past such surfaces have been performed to validate an expression [E.S.Asmolov and O.I.Vinogradova, J. Fluid Mech. \textbf{706}, 108 (2012)] that relates the eigenvalues of the effective slip-length tensor for one-dimensional textures. Second, we propose theoretical estimates for the effective slip length and calculate it numerically by solving the Stokes equation based on a collocation method. The comparison …
Ultrasound-assisted bleaching: Mathematical and 3D computational fluid dynamics simulation of ultrasound parameters on microbubble formation and cavi…
2019
Abstract The implementation of ultrasound-assisted bleaching (UAB) is gaining interest in commercial oil refining, as an alternative to the current bleaching procedure (BP), because this technique has several advantages compared to the conventional BP. The mathematical and 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of the influence of ultrasound power, frequency and temperature for predicting microbubble formation and heat transfer in the ultrasonic treatment of soybean oil was assessed in order to optimize the UAB process. The fluctuation frequency and wave speed showed opposite effects on system response to the imposed pressure pulse. As the bubble radius shrinks to zero (after bubb…
Large deflection of magneto-electro-elastic laminated plates
2014
Abstract A model for the large deflection analysis of magneto-electro-elastic laminated plates is derived. The first order shear deformation theory and the von Karman stress function approach are employed. A set of resolving partial differential equations involving kinematical variables and the stress function is obtained as a consequence of the preliminary condensation of the electro-magnetic state to the plate kinematics. A closed form solution for simply-supported plates is presented. Numerical results are carried out for plates consisting of piezoelectric BaTiO 3 and piezomagnetic CoFe 2 O 4 layers. These results show the influence of large deflections on the plate response and could be…
Helium bubbles in alpha-irradiated aluminium: positron lifetime studies
1985
The formation of He-stabilised voids in aluminium single crystals injected with helium is monitored by positron lifetime measurements. The bubbles are observed to grow during annealing from 300 to 930K. The bubbles are extremely stable and survive annealing up to the melting point. Positron lifetime data are used to discuss the He density inside the bubbles and their growth mechanism.
The Application of CFD Methods for Modeling of a Three-Phase Fixed-Bed Reactor
2018
The mathematical model of the three-phase fixed-bed reactor (TBR) consisting of the continuity equation, the momentum balances of each phase and mass balances of reaction mixture components were presented and discussed. These balances are the result of averaging by means of Euler’s procedure and form the basis of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Although the CFD model is based on fundamental principles some empirical relations (closure lows) must be implemented into the momentum balance in order to ensure a proper description of the dynamics of very complex three-phase system. Therefore, the sensitivity of a multiphase CFD model with respect to relations defining drag forces between …
