A Rayleigh-Ritz approach for postbuckling analysis of variable angle tow composite stiffened panels

2018

Abstract A Rayleigh-Ritz solution approach for generally restrained multilayered variable angle tow stiffened plates in postbuckling regime is presented. The plate model is based on the first order shear deformation theory and accounts for geometrical nonlinearity through the von Karman’s assumptions. Stiffened plates are modelled as assembly of plate-like elements and penalty techniques are used to join the elements in the assembled structure and to apply the kinematical boundary conditions. General symmetric and unsymmetric stacking sequences are considered and Legendre orthogonal polynomials are employed to build the trial functions. A computer code was developed to implement the propose…

Post-buckling analysis of cracked multilayered composite plates by pb-2 Rayleigh–Ritz method

2015

Abstract A pb-2 Rayleigh–Ritz variational approach for the analysis of post-buckling behavior of cracked composite plates is presented. The plate is modeled by the first order shear deformation theory taking geometric nonlinearities into account through the von Karman’s theory. General stacking sequences are considered. Cracks are modeled by using subdomain decomposition of the plate coupled with penalty techniques, used to augment the variational statement with the needed continuity conditions along the connected subdomains edges. Numerical procedures have been developed and used to validate the present solution by comparison with available literature results. Original results are then pre…

Post-Buckling Analysis of Damaged Multilayered Composite Stiffened Plates by Rayleigh-Ritz Method

2016

A Rayleigh-Ritz approach for the analysis of buckling and post-buckling behavior of cracked composite stiffened plates is presented. The structure is modeled as the assembly of plate elements modeled by the first order shear deformation theory and taking geometric nonlinearities into account through the von Karman’s theory assumptions. Continuity along the plate elements connected edges and the enforcement of rigid and elastic restraints of the plate boundaries are obtained by using penalty techniques, which also allow to straightforwardly implement efficient crack modeling strategies. General symmetric and unsymmetric stacking sequences are considered and numerical procedures have been dev…

Well-Balanced Adaptive Mesh Refinement for shallow water flows

2014

Well-balanced shock capturing (WBSC) schemes constitute nowadays the state of the art in the numerical simulation of shallow water flows. They allow to accurately represent discontinuous behavior, known to occur due to the non-linear hyperbolic nature of the shallow water system, and, at the same time, numerically maintain stationary solutions. In situations of practical interest, these schemes often need to be combined with some kind of adaptivity, in order to speed up computing times. In this paper we discuss what ingredients need to be modified in a block-structured AMR technique in order to ensure that, when combined with a WBSC scheme, the so-called 'water at rest' stationary solutions…

Improving the rheometry of rubberized bitumen: experimental and computation fluid dynamics studies

2017

Abstract Multi-phase materials are common in several fields of engineering and rheological measurements are intensively adopted for their development and quality control. Unfortunately, due to the complexity of these materials, accurate measurements can be challenging. This is the case of bitumen-rubber blends used in civil engineering as binders for several applications such as asphalt concrete for road pavements but recently also for roofing membranes. These materials can be considered as heterogeneous blends of fluid and particles with different densities. Due to this nature the two components tends to separate and this phenomenon can be enhanced with inappropriate design and mixing. Thi…

SUNRISE/IMaX observations of convectively driven vortex flows in the Sun

2010

We characterize the observational properties of the convectively driven vortex flows recently discovered on the quiet Sun, using magnetograms, Dopplergrams and images obtained with the 1-m balloon-borne Sunrise telescope. By visual inspection of time series, we find some 3.1e-3 vortices/(Mm^2 min), which is a factor of 1.7 larger than previous estimates. The mean duration of the individual events turns out to be 7.9 min, with a standard deviation of 3.2 min. In addition, we find several events appearing at the same locations along the duration of the time series (31.6 min). Such recurrent vortices show up in the proper motion flow field map averaged over the time series. The typical vertica…

Diagonalization of indefinite saddle point forms

2020

We obtain sufficient conditions that ensure block diagonalization (by a direct rotation) of sign-indefinite symmetric sesquilinear forms as well as the associated operators that are semi-bounded neither from below nor from above. In the semi-bounded case, we refine the obtained results and, as an example, revisit the block Stokes operator from fluid dynamics.
