Application of Hydrogen Peroxide to Improve the Microbiological Stability of Food Ice Produced in Industrial Facilities
2022
This work was aimed to produce an “active” food ice to preserve its microbiological safety over time. With this in mind, ice cubes were processed with the addition of H2O2 to water before freezing. Four food ice productions were performed at the industrial level: one control trial without the addition of H2O2 (0OX) and three experimental trials obtained by adding 4, 8, and 12 mg/L of H2O2 (4OX, 8OX, and 12OX), respectively. After production, all food ice trials were artificially contaminated with 102 CFU/100 mL of water-borne pathogenic bacteria (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Enteroccus faecalis ATCC 29212, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853) inoculated individually. Thawed ice samples we…
Local thermal non-equilibrium effects in the Darcy–Bénard instability of a porous layer heated from below by a uniform flux
2013
Abstract The influence of the lack of thermal equilibrium between the solid phase and the fluid phase on the convective instability in a porous medium is studied. A horizontal layer with parallel and impermeable bounding walls is considered. The lower wall is assumed to be isoflux, and the upper wall isothermal. The basic motionless state is perturbed with small-amplitude disturbances, so that a linear analysis of the instability is carried out with a streamfunction-temperature formulation of the local balance equations. Then, the governing equations are solved for the normal modes, leading to an eigenvalue problem for the neutral stability. This eigenvalue problem is solved analytically, t…
Forest planning across Europe: the spatial scale, tools, and inter-sectoral integration in land-use planning
2014
New approaches to forest planning are needed to support the transition of European forests to sustainable management. The aim of this study is to review forest planning systems already in place throughout Europe by exploring a set of case-study countries reflecting the main silvicultural schools of Western Europe, including Belgium, Finland, France, Italy, Portugal, and Slovenia. A literature review and case-study data were used to assess the scale factors (vertical logic) as well as the relationships between forest planning and other environmental6 land-use planning sectors (horizontal logic). The influence of EU policy on the development of forest planning is also discussed. As assessed u…
The capillary waves' contribution to wind-wave generation
2022
Published theories and observations have shown that dissipation of gravity waves implies frequency downshifting of wave energy. Hence, for wind-waves, the wind energy input to the highest frequencies is of special interest. Here it is shown that this input is vital, because the direct wind energy input obtained by the air-pressure’s work on most gravity waves is slightly less than what the waves need to grow. Further, the wind’s input of the angular momentum that waves need to grow is found to be absent at most gravity wave frequencies. The capillary waves that appear at the surface of the sea when the wind is blowing solve these problems. To demonstrate this, an extension of linear wave th…
Development of a Novel Object Detection System Based on Synthetic Data Generated from Unreal Game Engine
2022
This paper presents a novel approach to training a real-world object detection system based on synthetic data utilizing state-of-the-art technologies. Training an object detection system can be challenging and time-consuming as machine learning requires substantial volumes of training data with associated metadata. Synthetic data can solve this by providing unlimited desired training data with automatic generation. However, the main challenge is creating a balanced dataset that closes the reality gap and generalizes well when deployed in the real world. A state-of-the-art game engine, Unreal Engine 4, was used to approach the challenge of generating a photorealistic dataset for deep learnin…
Nexus Water & Energy: A Case Study of Wave Energy Converters (WECs) to Desalination Applications in Sicily
2016
The recent studies about interactions among energy and water are considered as a new field of research. As almost all energy generation processes require significant amounts of water, and water requires energy for treatment and transport, so these two resources are inextricably linked. The main aim of this work is a presentation of the use of renewable energy for desalination plants in Sicily: in particular exploitation of wave energy into electrical energy necessary for water treatment. Desalination is the most energy intensive water treatment technology but it could be solution for many problems in water supply for areas with chronic debt of water. In this study we find three section: in …
Coherence between marine and land use planning: public attitudes to landscapes in the context of siting a wind park along the Latvian coast of the Ba…
2014
The aim of this paper is to contribute to coherence in marine, coastal and land use planning and management from the perspective of landscape values. At a time when new sea uses are emerging and marine spatial planning laws and regulations are being adopted, but have not yet been put into practice, research studies are required that provide spatial planners with informed insights concerning public stakeholder attitudes to controversial policies. The undertaken research explored the attitudes of two important social groups (local residents and tourists/recreational users) regarding locating wind parks in the marine and/or terrestrial environment along the Latvian coast of the Baltic Sea. The…
Deterioration of Property of Aluminum Alloys (EN AW-1050A, EN AW-5754 and EN AW-6060) by Absorbed Hydrogen
2022
The paper reports the results of research on the effect of hydrogen penetration on the variations in the mechanical properties of selected aluminum alloys. As a result of the study, it can be observed that such variations contribute to the deterioration of mechanical properties, which, in turn, contributes to shortening the reliability time associated with the operation of aluminum alloy structures. The analysis involved structural aluminum alloys: EN AW-1050A, EN AW-5754 and EN AW-6060. Tensile strength and impact strength were measured. It was demonstrated that the absorption of hydrogen by the analyzed alloys led to the deterioration of mechanical properties of aluminum alloys. The perfo…
A Marble Bust Newly Discovered by the Trapani Lombardo Family of Reggio Calabria (Southern Italy)
2023
This research concerns a stylistic and archaeometric study of an ancient marble female bust recently discovered by the Trapani Lombardo family of Reggio Calabria (Southern Italy) and delivered to the Superintendency of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape for the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria and Vibo Valentia (SABAP). Based on the first technical, stylistic, and iconographic observations made by the competent bodies, it is a half-length portrait bust from the Roman era, which precisely had the function of faithfully reproducing the physiognomy of the depicted subject. The research aimed to establish the authenticity of the artwork and the origin of the raw material, providing indic…
Reputation-Based Blockchain for Spatial Crowdsourcing in Vehicular Networks
2022
The sharing of high-quality traffic information plays a crucial role in enhancing the driving experience and safety performance for vehicular networks, especially in the development of electric vehicles (EVs). The crowdsourcing-based real-time navigation of charging piles is characterized by low delay and high accuracy. However, due to the lack of an effective incentive mechanism and the resource-consuming bottleneck of sharing real-time road conditions, methods to recruit or motivate more EVs to provide high-quality information gathering has attracted considerable interest. In this paper, we first introduce a blockchain platform, where EVs act as the blockchain nodes, and a reputation-base…
