Control of quantum systems

1999

We propose a new control method for systems whose evolution is described by Schrödinger's equation (quantum dynamics). The goal of the control is to induce modifications of observable quantities — with possible effects at mesoscopic or macroscopic levels — by modifying the potential at the microscopic level. We illustrate the feasibility of the approach on a harmonic oscillator system.

Light polarization measurements in tests of macrorealism

2018

According to the world view of macrorealism, the properties of a given system exist prior to and independent of measurement, which is incompatible with quantum mechanics. Leggett and Garg put forward a practical criterion capable of identifying violations of macrorealism, and so far experiments performed on microscopic and mesoscopic systems have always ruled out in favor of quantum mechanics. However, a macrorealist can always assign the cause of such violations to the perturbation that measurements effect on such small systems, and hence a definitive test would require using non-invasive measurements, preferably on macroscopic objects, where such measurements seem more plausible. However,…

Detector's quantum backaction effects on a mesoscopic conductor and fluctuation-dissipation relation

2016

When measuring quantum mechanical properties of charge transport in mesoscopic conductors, backaction effects occur. We consider a measurement setup with an elementary quantum circuit, composed of an inductance and a capacitor, as detector of the current flowing in a nearby quantum point contact. A quantum Langevin equation for the detector variable including backaction effects is derived. Differences with the quantum Langevin equation obtained in linear response are pointed out. In this last case, a relation between fluctuations and dissipation is obtained, provided that an effective temperature of the quantum point contact is defined.

Quantum algorithm for simulating an experiment: Light interference from single ions and their mirror images

2019

We widen the range of applications for quantum computing by introducing digital quantum simulation methods for coherent light-matter interactions: We simulate an experiment where the emitted light from a single ion was interfering with its mirror image [Eschner et al., Nature (London) 413, 495 (2001)]. Using the quantum simulation software q1tsim, we accurately reproduce the interference pattern which had been observed experimentally and also show the effect of the mirror position on the spontaneous-emission rate of the ion. In order to minimize the number of required qubits, we implement a qubit-reinitialization technique. We show that a digital quantum simulation of complex experiments in…

Bounds on the entanglement of two-qutrit systems from fixed marginals

2019

We discuss the problem of characterizing upper bounds on entanglement in a bipartite quantum system when only the reduced density matrices (marginals) are known. In particular, starting from the known two-qubit case, we propose a family of candidates for maximally entangled mixed states with respect to fixed marginals for two qutrits. These states are extremal in the convex set of two-qutrit states with fixed marginals. Moreover, it is shown that they are always quasidistillable. As a by-product we prove that any maximally correlated state that is quasidistillable must be pure. Our observations for two qutrits are supported by numerical analysis.

Zones of soft and hard self-excitation in gyrotrons: Generalized approach

2020

It is known that the gyrotron theory is developed in a general form that allows one to draw many important conclusions about gyrotron operation, which are valid for gyrotrons operating in arbitrary modes, at arbitrary frequencies, and driven by electron beams with different voltages and currents. One of important issues in this theory is the analysis of possible start-up scenarios, i.e., the methods allowing, first, to excite the desired mode prior to competitors in the region of soft self-excitation of this mode and, then, drive it into the zone of hard self-excitation where, as a rule, the operation with high efficiency is possible. So far, in all studies, these zones of soft and hard sel…

Compact-envelope bright solitary wave in a DNA double strand

2012

International audience; We study the nonlinear dynamics of a homogeneous DNA chain which is based on site-dependent finite stacking and pairing enthalpies. We introduce an extended nonlinear Schroedinger equation describing the dynamics of modulated waves in DNA model. We obtain envelope bright solitary waves with compact support as a solution. Analytical criteria of existence and stability of this solution are derived. The stability of bright compactons is confirmed by numerical simulations of the exact equations of the lattice. The impact of the fi nite stacking energy is investigated and we show that some of these compact bright solitary waves are very robust, while others decompose quic…

High-precision measurement of the atomic mass of the electron

2014

A very precise measurement of the magnetic moment of a single electron bound to a carbon nucleus, combined with a state-of-the-art calculation in the framework of bound-state quantum electrodynamics, gives a new value of the atomic mass of the electron that is more precise than the currently accepted one by a factor of 13. The atomic mass of the electron is a key parameter for fundamental physics. A precise determination is a challenge because the mass is so low. Sven Sturm and colleagues report on a new determination of the electron's mass in atomic units. The authors measured the magnetic moment of a single electron bound to a reference ion (a bare nucleus of carbon-12). The results were …

Switching Reciprocity On and Off in a Magneto-Optical X-Ray Scattering Experiment Using Nuclear Resonance ofα−Fe57Foils

2012

Reciprocity is when the scattering amplitude of wave propagation satisfies a symmetry property, connecting a scattering process with an appropriate reversed one. We report on an experiment using nuclear resonance scattering of synchrotron radiation, which demonstrates that magneto-optical materials do not necessarily violate reciprocity. The setting enables us to switch easily between reciprocity and its violation. In the latter case, the exhibited reciprocity violation is orders of magnitude larger than achieved by previous wave scattering experiments.
