Axialisation, cooling and quenching of $\mathsf{Ba^+}$ ions in a Penning trap

1998

Collisions of ions, stored in a Penning trap, with neutral background molecules usually lead to rapid ion loss from the trap unless the ions are excited by the sum of the frequencies of the reduced cyclotron and magnetron motion. Then the ions are cooled by collisions and are driven to the trap centre leading to substantial increase of the storage time. Furthermore in a three level system including a long living metastable state collisions deexcite this metastable state and increase the population density in the ionic ground state. In a laser spectroscopic experiment we demonstrate the advantages of collisions on Ba+ ions stored in a Penning trap. The combined action of metastable state que…

The effect of wear on the tetragonal-to-monoclinic transformation and the residual stress distribution in zirconia-toughened alumina cutting tools

1998

Abstract Zirconia-toughened alumina cutting tools have been examined after machining an AISI 1040 steel. The Raman spectrum of zirconia and the fluorescence spectrum from alumina have been used to determine the extent of the tetragonal-to-monoclinic (t-m) transformation and the residual stresses in and around the worn-out crater, respectively. Although about 15% vol. m-zirconia is present even in a brand new cutting tool, it was shown that the crater region undergoes the t-m transformation up to 40% vol. In both cases, the transformed zone is concentrated near the surface. The residual stresses in alumina are slightly compressive in the new cutting tool and away from the crater region, but …

β-C3N4 Nanocrystals: Carbon Dots with Extraordinary Morphological, Structural, and Optical Homogeneity

2018

Carbon nanodots are known for their appealing optical properties, especially their intense fluorescence tunable in the visible range. However, they are often affected by considerable issues of optical and structural heterogeneity, which limit their optical performance and limit the practical possibility of applying these nanoparticles in several fields. Here we developed a synthesis method capable of producing a unique variety of carbon nanodots displaying an extremely high visible absorption strength (ε > 3 × 106 M(dot)−1 cm−1) and a high fluorescence quantum yield (73%). The high homogeneity of these dots reflects in many domains: morphological (narrow size distribution), structural (q…

Fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy: potential for in-vivo estimation of skin fluorophores changes after low power laser treatment

2013

The impact of visible cwlaser irradiation on skin autofluorescence lifetimes was investigated in spectral range from 450 nm to 600 nm. Skin optical provocations were performed during 1 min by 405 nm low power cw laser with power density up to 20 mW/cm 2 . Autofluorescence lifetimes were measured before and immediately after the optical provocation.

Characterization of used mineral oil condition by spectroscopic techniques

2004

Optical absorption, fluorescence, and quantitative 13C NMR spectroscopy have been used to study the degradation of mineral gearbox oil. Samples of used oil were collected from field service. Measured absorption, fluorescence, and quantitative 13C NMR spectra of used oils show characteristic changes from the spectra of a fresh oil sample. A clearly observable, approximately 20-nm blueshift of the fluorescence emission occurs during the early stages of oil use and correlates with changes in intensity of some specific 13C NMR resonance lines. These changes correlate with oil age because of the connection between the blueshift and breaking of the larger conjugated hydrocarbons of oil as a resul…

Two-Color Single Hybrid Plasmonic Nanoemitters with Real Time Switchable Dominant Emission Wavelength

2015

International audience; We demonstrate two-color nanoemitters that enable the selection of the dominant emitting wavelength by varying the polarization of excitation light. The nanoemitters were fabricated via surface plasmon-triggered two-photon polymerization. By using two polymerizable solutions with different quantum dots, emitters of different colors can be positioned selectively in different orientations in the close vicinity of the metal nanoparticles. The dominant emission wavelength of the metal/polymer anisotropic hybrid nanoemitter thus can be selected by altering the incident polarization.

Autofluorescence spectroscopy of cutaneous neoplasia under ultraviolet, visible and near infrared excitation

2020

We investigated melanin-pigmented skin samples ex vivo, of benign and dysplastic nevi, as well as malignant melanoma, obtained after surgical excision, containing so called safety areas, where a normal skin could be observed, to obtain a complex and complete view about the feasibility of different excitation sources solely and/or in combination to induce fluorescence signal useful for diagnosis of pigmented cutaneous neoplasia. Using the specialized multispectral analysis of the data obtained by fluorescence using excitation in broad spectral range, covering ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared spectral range, contribute considerably to the both the fundamental determination of tumour tis…
