A Comparative Study of Top-Down and Bottom-Up Carbon Nanodots and Their Interaction with Mercury Ions
2021
We report a study of carbon dots produced via bottom-up and top-down routes, carried out through a multi-technique approach based on steady-state fluorescence and absorption, time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Our study focuses on a side-to-side comparison of the fundamental structural and optical properties of the two families of fluorescent nanoparticles, and on their interaction pathways with mercury ions, which we use as a probe of surface emissive chromophores. Comparison between the two families of carbon dots, and between carbon dots subjected to different functionalization procedures, readily identifies a …
Enhanced quantification of wollastonite and calcite in limestone using fluorescence correction based on continuous wavelet transformation for Raman
2020
Raman spectroscopy offers a nondestructive means to identify minerals in rocks, but the ability to use the technology for quantitative mineralogical analysis is limited by fluorescence that can mask the spectral features of minerals. In this paper we apply continuous wavelet transformation (CWT) to remove fluoresence from Raman data acquired from 26 carbonate rock samples. We then record the intensity values of individual spectral features, proxies for mineral abundances, using the original Raman data and the thus inferred CWT data. The intensity values are then compared against the known mineral abundances determined using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) technology. This comparison …
About the dynamics of strongly coupled surface plasmon polaritons and Sulforhodamine 101
2014
We investigate the dynamics of strongly coupled surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) and molecular excitations (ME) of Sulforhodamine 101 dye. The SPPs are excited by prism coupling technique on a thin silver film with dye molecules embedded in a polymer layer on top of it. Rabi splittings with energies of 135 and 97 meV are observed in the recorded dispersion relations. Both coupled oscillator model and transfer matrix method are used to fit the experimental results. In addition to the common reflectance measurements, polarization resolved detection of scattered signal from the molecular side is also utilized. Simultaneous detection of the scattered polaritons and molecular fluorescence reveal…
Sensitive sequential-injection system for the determination of 2-phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulphonic acid in human urine samples using on-line solid-phas…
2003
Abstract 2-Phenylbenzimidazole-5-sulphonic acid (PBS) is an UV-filter contained in many cosmetics as a sunscreen. A direct, selective and sensitive method to determine traces of PBS is presented. The on-line separation of this compound from urine matrix was directly coupled with fluorimetric detection in a sequential-injection system. The separation was performed using a SAX microcolumn in which the analyte was retained and eluted selectively. The determination is carried out without any derivatization reaction, by directly measuring the intrinsic fluorescence of the analyte. The wavelengths of excitation and emission were 301 and 681 nm, respectively. On-line standard addition calibration …
Systematic procedure for the preparation of sets of calibration standards for x-ray fluorescence analysis of ceramic materials
1998
A systematic procedure for the preparation of optimized sets of calibration solid standards for the x-ray fluorescence analysis of ceramic materials is described. The matrix of the contents of the N analytes in the n standards (n ≥ N) is calculated from an n x N experimental design matrix, and from the upper and lower limits of the calibration range for each of the N analytes. Two procedures, which are useful for taking into account analyte interactions, are proposed for constructing the experimental design matrix, i.e. the scroll procedure and the procedure of the centers. A program developed to help the analyst in designing and preparing the set of standards following the proposed procedu…

Imaging and non-imaging spectroscopy employed in the field and from aircraft is frequently used to assess biochemical, structural, and functional plant traits, as well as their dynamics in an environmental matrix. With the increasing availability of high-resolution spectroradiometers, it has become feasible to measure fine spectral features, such as those needed to estimate sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (F), which is a signal related to the photosynthetic process of plants. The measurement of F requires highly accurate and precise radiance measurements in combination with very sophisticated measurement protocols. Additionally, because F has a highly dynamic nature (compared with othe…
Identification of markers that can be recognised using spectroscopic sensors and which reflect key stages in the cooking of meat and fish
2016
One of the purposes of the Opticook project is to install spectroscopic sensors in ovens, so equipping them with non intrusive tools allowing following cooking process of meat and fish. The hypothesis on which sensors were developed was: are muscular proteins proper probes to discriminate among several cooking degrees? Thus, at the beginning of the project several tools were used to characterise effect of several cooking degrees on macroscopic properties (texture and colour) of beef, chicken and cod fillet samples. Following, calorimetry and spectroscopic techniques were used to study transformations at molecular scale. In particular, visible spectroscopy followed denaturation of haemprotei…
Oligo(phenylenevinylene)s with increased electron affinity: 1,3,4-oxadiazoles in the main chain
2001
Stilbenoid chromophores and 2,5-diaryl-1,3,4-oxadiazoles are compounds with wide technical importance. Their intense fluorescence is used in szintillators and optical whiteners and their semiconducting properties makes them valuable emissive or electron conducting layers in organic light emitting diodes (OLED). The synthesis and the electronic spectra of soluble oligo(phenylenevinylene)s with 1,3,4-oxadiazoles in the main chain are presented. The Huisgen reaction of tetrazole-terminated stilbenoid compounds with aromatic acyl chlorides yields model compounds, isophthalic acid dichlorides lead to soluble polymers with well-defined conjugated segments, as can be seen in the electronic spectra…
Landomycins as glutathione-depleting agents and natural fluorescent probes for cellular Michael adduct-dependent quinone metabolism
2021
Landomycins are angucyclines with promising antineoplastic activity produced by Streptomyces bacteria. The aglycone landomycinone is the distinctive core, while the oligosaccharide chain differs within derivatives. Herein, we report that landomycins spontaneously form Michael adducts with biothiols, including reduced cysteine and glutathione, both cell-free or intracellularly involving the benz[a]anthraquinone moiety of landomycinone. While landomycins generally do not display emissive properties, the respective Michael adducts exerted intense blue fluorescence in a glycosidic chain-dependent manner. This allowed label-free tracking of the short-lived nature of the mono-SH-adduct followed b…
Relationships of the Woody Medicago Species (Section Dendrotelis) Assessed by Molecular Cytogenetic Analyses
2008
†Background and Aims The organization of rDNA genes in the woody medic species from the agronomically important Medicago section Dendrotelis was analysed to gain insight into their taxonomic relationships, to assess the levels of infraspecific variation concerning ribosomal loci in a restricted and fragmented insular species (M. citrina) and to assess the nature of its polyploidy. †Methods Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was used for physical mapping of 5S and 45S ribosomal DNA genes in the three species of section Dendrotelis (M. arborea, M. citrina, M. strasseri) and the related M. marina from section Medicago. Genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) was used to assess the genomic …
