An in vitro evaluation of the efficacy of a novel iontophoresis fluoride tray on remineralization
2013
Objectives: The aim of this study is to determine the effects on remineralization of a novel iontophoresis device called "Fluorinex", conventional (acidulated phosphat fluoride) APF gel treatment, and conventional ionthophoresis device comparatively by laser fluorescence measurements. Study Design: Artificial incipient carious lesions were created on immature, 60 intact premolar and molar teeth with no defects. The specimens were randomly allocated to four groups. In the first group 1.23% APF gel was applied to specimens by conventional method for 4 minutes and in the second group 2% (sodium fluoride) NaF solution applied by conventional iontophoresis device for 4 minutes. In Fluorinex grou…
Effects of elevated hydrogen peroxide 'strip' bleaching on surface and subsurface enamel including subsurface histomorphology, micro-chemical composi…
2007
Abstract Objectives This study examined the effects of elevated concentration hydrogen peroxide tooth whitening treatments on tooth surface and subsurface integrity. Methods Sound human molars were ground and polished to prepare an uniform substrate for bleaching treatments. A cycling treatment included alternating ex vivo human salivary exposures with bleaching treatments under conditions of controlled temperature and durations of treatment. Bleaching was carried out with prototype bleaching strips containing hydrogen peroxide gel at 13% and 16% concentrations. A non-bleached group was used as a control. Treatments included 28 h of total bleaching exposure in vitro . Surface color was meas…
Effect of low-level GaAlAs laser irradiation on the proliferation rate of human periodontal ligament fibroblasts: an in vitro study
2003
Aim: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate a potential stimulatory effect of low-level laser irradiation on the proliferation of human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (PDLF). Materials and Methods: PDLF obtained from third molar periodontal ligaments were cultured under standard conditions and spread on 96-well tissue culture plates. Subconfluent monolayers were irradiated with an 809-nm diode laser operated at a power output of 10 mW in the continuos wave (cw) mode at energy fluences of 1.96‐7.84 Jcm ‐2 . The variable irradiation parameters were the time of exposure (75‐300 s per well) and the number of irradiations (1‐3). After laser treatment, the cultures were incubated for 24…
Design and Synthesis of Novel 1,3-Thiazole and 2-Hydrazinyl-1,3-Thiazole Derivatives as Anti-
2019
In the context of there being a limited number of clinically approved drugs for the treatment of Candida sp.-based infections, along with the rapid development of resistance to the existing antifungals, two novel series of 4-phenyl-1,3-thiazole and 2-hydrazinyl-4-phenyl-1,3-thiazole derivatives were synthesized and tested in vitro for their anti-Candida potential. Two compounds (7a and 7e) showed promising inhibitory activity against the pathogenic C. albicans strain, exhibiting substantially lower MIC values (7.81 μg/mL and 3.9 μg/mL, respectively) as compared with the reference drug fluconazole (15.62 μg/mL). Their anti-Candida activity is also supported by molecular docking studies, usin…
Papillote and Piopio:DrosophilaZP-domain proteins required for cell adhesion to the apical extracellular matrix and microtubule organization
2005
Adhesion between epithelial cells and extracellular substrates is normally mediated through basal adhesion complexes. However, some cells also possess comparable junctions on their apical surface. Here, we describe two new Drosophila proteins, Piopio and Papillote, that are required for the link between the apical epithelial surface and the overlying apical extracellular matrix (aECM). The two proteins share a zona pellucida (ZP) domain with mammalian aECM components, including the tectorins found in the vertebrate inner ear. Tagged versions of both proteins localized to the apical epithelial surface. Mutations in piopio, papillote and dumpy (another gene encoding a ZP-domain protein) cause…
Two α subunits and one β subunit of meprin zinc-endopeptidases are differentially expressed in the zebrafish Danio rerio
2007
Abstract Meprins are members of the astacin family of metalloproteases expressed in epithelial tissues, intestinal leukocytes and certain cancer cells. In mammals, there are two homologous subunits, which form complex glycosylated disulfide-bonded homo- and heterooligomers. Both human meprin α and meprin β cleave several basement membrane components, suggesting a role in epithelial differentiation and cell migration. There is also evidence that meprin β is involved in immune defence owing to its capability of activating interleukin-1β and the diminished mobility of intestinal leukocytes in meprin β-knockout mice. Here we show for the first time by reverse transcription PCR, immunoblotting a…
Site-specific incorporation of perylene into an N-terminally modified light-harvesting complex II.
2010
Employing the utility of the native chemical ligation, site-specific attachment of an ultrastable perylene dye to a derivative of the major light-harvesting complex (LHCII) was demonstrated. Biochemical analysis of the conjugate indicated that the structure and function of LHCII remain largely unaffected by the N-terminal modification.
On the Mechanism of Gold/NHC Compounds Binding to DNA G-Quadruplexes: Combined Metadynamics and Biophysical Methods
2018
The binding modes and free-energy landscape of two AuI /N-heterocyclic carbene complexes interacting with G-quadruplexes, namely a human telomeric (hTelo) and a promoter sequence (C-KIT1), are studied here for the first time by metadynamics. The theoretical results are validated by FRET DNA melting assays and provide an accurate estimate of the absolute gold complex/DNA binding free energy. This advanced in silico approach is valuable to achieve rational drug design of selective G4 binders.
Synthesis of Tetrasubstituted 4,4'-Biimidazoles
2012
Highly substituted 4,4'-biimidazoles were synthesized, in good to excellent yields, through a multicomponent imidazole ring synthesis by using imidazol-4-yl-ethane-1,2-diones as starting materials. The obtained compounds were preliminarily tested as chromogenic and fluorescent sensors for heavy metals.
