Isotope shifts in natural cerium

2003

High resolution crossed beam resonance fluorescence laser spectroscopy has been performed on an atomic beam of naturally occurring cerium, and isotope shifts have been measured in several transitions. Changes in mean square charge radius, δ〈r 2〉, have been extracted using the King plot technique and show the characteristic increase at the N = 82 neutron shell closure. The measurements form the basis for further investigations of radioactive isotopes and isomers on both sides of the shell closure.

Strong Emission Enhancement in pH-Responsive 2:2 Cucurbit[8]uril Complexes

Organic fluorophores, particularly stimuli-responsive molecules, are very interesting for biological and material sciences applications, but frequently limited by aggregation- and rotation-caused photoluminescence quenching. A series of easily accessible bipyridinium fluorophores, whose emission is quenched by a twisted intramolecular charge-transfer (TICT) mechanism, is reported. Encapsulation in a cucurbit[7]uril host gave a 1:1 complex exhibiting a moderate emission increase due to destabilization of the TICT state inside the apolar cucurbituril cavity. Fourier transform spectroscopy and direct potential fit of a shelflike state: application to E(4)1Σ(+) KCs.

The paper presents high-resolution experimental study and a direct potential construction of a shelflike state E(4)(1)Σ(+) of the KCs molecule converging to K(4(2)S) + Cs(5(2)D) atomic limit; such data are of interest for selecting optical paths for producing and monitoring cold polar diatomics. Short hydrogen bonds enhance nonaromatic protein-related fluorescence

Significance Intrinsic fluorescence of nonaromatic amino acids is a puzzling phenomenon with an enormous potential in biophotonic applications. The physical origins of this effect, however, remain elusive. Herein, we demonstrate how specific hydrogen bond networks can modulate fluorescence. We highlight the key role played by short hydrogen bonds, present in the protein structure, on the ensuing fluorescence. We provide detailed experimental and molecular evidence to explain these unusual nonaromatic optical properties. Our findings should benefit the design of novel optically active biomaterials for applications in biosensing and imaging.

Conservation Work on an Ancient Sicilian Processional Banner: Preliminary Analyses and in Situ Restoration

Abstract Before carrying out the conservation work on the gilded wooden frame of the processional banner coming from Tusa, Sicily, some preliminary diagnostic analyses were conducted in order to identify materials that made up the wooden frame. After a micro-sampling phase, a thin section of the wooden support allowed to identify the timber as linden wood (basswood). The X-Ray Fluorescence analysis confirmed the presence of a thin layer of primer made of plaster and animal glue covered with a red bolus primer, used for the gilding process. The restoration was carried out during the opening hours of the museum, allowing visitors to be informed on the restoration phases.

Red and far-red sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence as a measure of plant photosynthesis

Remote estimation of Sun-induced chlorophyll fluorescence emitted by terrestrial vegetation can provide an unparalleled opportunity to track spatiotemporal variations of photosynthetic efficiency. Here we provide the first direct experimental evidence that the two peaks of the chlorophyll fluorescence spectrum can be accurately mapped from high-resolution radiance spectra and that the signal is linked to variations in actual photosynthetic efficiency. Supramolecular assembly using helical peptides

Abstract We investigated supramolecular assemblies of various hydrophobic helical peptides. The assemblies were formed at the air/water interface or in aqueous medium. The hexadecapeptide, Boc-(Ala-Aib)8-OMe (BA16M), was reported to take α-helical structure by X-ray analysis. Several derivatives were prepared, which have the repeating sequence of Ala-Aib, Lys(Z)-Aib or Leu-Aib, or have the terminal chemically modified. Electrochromic absorbance changes in the chlorophyll-c-containing alga Pleurochloris meiringensis (Xanthophyceae)

Flash-induced absorbance changes were measured in the Chl-c-containing alga Pleurochloris meiringensis (Xanthophyceae) between 430 and 570 nm. In addition to the bands originating from redox changes of cytochromes, three major positive and tow negative transient bands were observed both 0.7 and 20 ms after the exciting flash. These transient bands peaking at 520, 480 and 451 nm and 497 and 465 nm, respectively, could be assigned to an almost homogeneous shift of the absorbance bands with maxima at 506, 473 and 444 nm, respectively. Mechanisms of ligand binding by monoclonal anti-coproporphyrin antibodies are studied by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy by use of a picosecond laser system. The antibodies quench the coproporphyrin (CP) fluorescence, but the CP fluorescence spectra show a strong shift of maxima at high concentrations of antibodies (Ab) or their Fab fragment. This can be explained by a special type of Ab or Fab dimerization. Fluorescence decays of CP are measured at different concentrations of Ab and different pH values.
