Hydrolysis and microbial community analyses in two-stage anaerobic digestion of energy crops
2007
Aims: The roles of the diverse populations of micro-organisms responsible for biodegradation of organic matter to form methane and carbon dioxide are rudimentarily understood. To expand the knowledge on links between microbial communities and the rate limiting, hydrolytic stage of two-stage biogas production from energy crops, this study was performed. Methods and Results: The process performance. and microbial communities (as determined by fluorescence in situ hybridization) in two separate two-stage batch digestions of sugar beets and grass/clover were studied. The microbial populations developed in the hydrolytic stage of anaerobic digestion of beets and grass/clover showed very few simi…
<title>Formation of dislocations and hardening of LiF crystals irradiated with energetic Au, Bi, Pb, and S ions</title>
2003
The irradiation of LiF crystals with Au, Pb, Bi, and S ions in the range of 400 - 2200 MeV leads to a remarkable increase of the hardness. The effect appears for Bi and Pb ions at fluences above 109 ions/cm2 and for S ions above 1010 ions/cm2. The increase of hardness follows the energy loss and is related to the formation of defects along the ion path. Defect complexes, clusters and aggregates with nanoscale dimensions serve as strong obstacles for dislocations and cause dispersion strengthening. Structural investigations reveal the generation of long-range stress in the adjacent non-irradiated part of the crystal. Close to the implantation zone, the stress exceeds the yield strength, caus…
Observation of instability of faceted crystals in lipid monolayers
1998
Abstract The morphological instabilities of two-dimensional hexagonal crystals in lipid monolayers are studied. Fluorescence microscopy indicates that beyond a critical size the faceted crystal develops into dendrites with unusual tip growth behavior, which is not consistent with the current theory of dendritic growth. The morphological transitions in relation to the driving force for two-dimensional crystal growth are also studied.
Protective Effects of L- and D-Carnosine on R-Crystallin Amyloid Fibril Formation: Implications for Cataract Disease
2009
Mildly denaturing conditions induce bovine ?-crystallin, the major structural lens protein, to self-assemble into fibrillar structures in vitro. The natural dipeptide L-carnosine has been shown to have potential protective and therapeutic significance in many diseases. Carnosine derivatives have been proposed as potent agents for ophthalmic therapies of senile cataracts and diabetic ocular complications. Here we report the inhibitory effect induced by the peptide (L- and D-enantiomeric form) on ?-crystallin fibrillation and the almost complete restoration of the chaperone activity lost after denaturant and/or heat stress. Scanning force microscopy (SFM), thioflavin T, and a turbidimetry ass…
Exciton Interactions and Femtosecond Relaxation in Chlorophyll a−Water and Chlorophyll a−Dioxane Aggregates
1998
Chlorophyll a (Chl a) in hydrocarbon solution with a small amount of dioxane or water shows red-shifted absorption bands at 686 nm and at 700 nm (dioxane) and at 745 nm (water), indicative of self-organized aggregate structures in solution. To study the relationship between the structure and spectral properties of the aggregates, several one-dimensional model structures of Chl a−dioxane and Chl a−water aggregates were computed by the molecular mechanics method. Three overall structures ranging from stick to a ring shape were energetically favored for the dioxane system. All these structures contain structural heterogeneity that consists of repeating dimers that further form tetramer substru…
The influence of sigma and pi acceptors on two-photon absorption and solvatochromism of dipolar and quadrupolar unsaturated organic compounds.
2003
Two-photon absorption cross sections delta and solvatochromic properties were determined for a series of quadrupolar and dipolar compounds by using femtosecond excitation in the spectral range between 710 and 960 nm. The compounds investigated were distyrylbenzenes and polyenes bearing appropriate pi or sigma acceptors. The delta values for the centrosymmetric compounds trans, trans- 1,4-bis[2-(2',5'-dihexyloxy)phenylethenyl]-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene (6), trans, trans-1,4-bis[2-(4'-dibutylamino)phenylethenyl]- 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene (2), trans, trans-1,4-bis[2-(4'dimethylamino)phenylbutadienyl]- 2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene (7), trans,-trans-1,4-bis[2-(4'-dimethylamino)phenylethenyl]2,5…
<title>Heavy-ion induced damage and reduction of dislocation mobility in LiF single crystals</title>
2006
Ion-induced reduction of dislocation mobility in LiF crystals irradiated with swift heavy (U) and light (Ni) ions of a specific energy of 11 MeV per nucleon at fluences between 106 and 1011 ions/cm2 was studied. The arm length of dislocation rosettes produced by indentation on (100) irradiated surface was measured. It has been found that in the case of heavy ions the threshold fluence (106 ions/cm2) for impeding of dislocation arms is about 3 orders of magnitude lower than that for light ions. The results indicate that ion-induced defect aggregates play the dominating role in the impeding of dislocations. Heavy ions, which produce defect aggregates in the track core, cause also a stronger e…

Analysis of pigments from Spanish works of art using a portable EDXRF spectrometer
2002
Nowadays there is an intensive program for the conservation, restoration and analysis of the impressive and extensive Spanish cultural heritage. In the last few years, the Unidad de Arqueometria of the ICMUV has carry out a great quantity of in situ EDXRF analysis of pigments on materials of historic and cultural interest (altarpieces, frescoes, canvas, sculptures, etc.) from museums and churches of the whole of the Spanish geography. Here we present a few examples of the analysis of works of art using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry with a portable system based on x-ray tubes and a non-cryogenic Si-PIN detector. EDXRF qualitative and non-destructive analyses of stone, pigments and preparat…
Synchrotron Radiation-Based Micro-XANES and Micro-XRF Study of Unsuccessfully Produced Egyptian Blue from the Late Hellenistic Production Site of Kos…
2021
International audience; This paper examines the production technology of Egyptian blue, an ancient artificial pigment, through the investigation of an unsuccessfully produced pellet derived from the Hellenistic production site of Kos (Dodecanese, Greece). This heterogeneous material was investigated by a combination of laboratory and synchrotron radiation-based (SR) techniques: scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive Xray spectrometry, micro-Raman spectroscopy, high-resolution SR micro-X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, and SR micro-X-ray absorption near-edge structure spectroscopy (XANES), at the ID21 beamline of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. Principal comp…
