Learning from Differences
2018
This paper presents a case study of an intensive international course aimed at pre-service teachers and having a focus on inclusion. The course was funded by Nordplus. Twenty-three students from six Baltic and Nordic countries were interviewed during and after the course on their views on professionalism and their future work as teachers. The results show that the students’ understanding of professionalism was multifaceted, and they had gained several experiences of professionalism during the course. One of the main results of this study is, in our opinion, the co-operation and the opportunities the intensive course afforded the students in developing skills to work together with different …
Survey: Intrusion Detection Systems in Encrypted Traffic
2016
Intrusion detection system, IDS, traditionally inspects the payload information of packets. This approach is not valid in encrypted traffic as the payload information is not available. There are two approaches, with different detection capabilities, to overcome the challenges of encryption: traffic decryption or traffic analysis. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the research related to the IDSs in encrypted traffic. The focus is on traffic analysis, which does not need traffic decryption. One of the major limitations of the surveyed researches is that most of them are concentrating in detecting the same limited type of attacks, such as brute force or scanning attacks. Both the …
The Role of Log Entries in the Quality Control of Video Distribution
2012
Diversification of university teaching with the help of video lectures has become much more common during the past few years. Once videos have become an essential part of teaching arrangements, whoever organizes the teaching must also pay attention to factors related to videos in quality system work for teaching. In the video production process it is the factors related to video transmission that exert influence on the usability of videos and set limitations for their production. A lot of information about those factors can be obtained from the media server log files. The particular focus of this paper is on the functionality of the connection between a server and a client and its effect on…
Career and Romantic Relationship Goals and Concerns During Emerging Adulthood
2013
This study examined emerging adults’ personal goals and concerns in the domains of career (including education, work, and financial issues) and romantic relationship. A particular focus was on goal and concern hierarchies, that is, individuals’ profiles of goals and concerns. A total of 1,052 Finnish emerging adults (63% female) were followed at ages 20 and 23. Latent class analyses yielded goal and concern profiles that were primarily related to career, whereas romantic relationships were less central in individuals’ goal and concern hierarchies. Career and romantic relationship goals and concerns were associated with life status in these domains, especially prioritizing career goals and …
Investigating how user avatar in touchless interfaces affects perceived cognitive load and two-handed interactions
2017
In recent years, touchless-enabling technologies have been more and more adopted for providing public displays with gestural interactivity. This has led to the need for novel visual interfaces aimed at solving issues such as communicating interactivity to users, as well as supporting immediate usability and "natural" interactions. In this paper, we focus our investigation on a visual interface based only on the use of in-air direct manipulations. Our study aims at evaluating whether and how the presence of an Avatar that replays user's movements may decrease the perceived cognitive workload during interactions. Moreover, we conducted a brief evaluation of the relationship between the presen…
Special Section on ITS Services to Smart City Context [Guest Editorial]
2018
The seven articles in this special section focus on new trends and developments in the intelligent transportation markets. Since the earliest of times, transportation has changed and revolutionized society and industry. Many of technology advances were focused on transportation and their means (road, rail, air, water, etc.) even, today there exist several areas of the knowledge that are focused on it. As time goes by, new terms have been established where technology is present as well, for instance, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), Smart Cities, Smart Territory, Blockchain, Internet of Things, virtualization, Cloud computing, Intelligent Vehicles, embedded computing, Deep learning,…
Collaborative development of a CPS-based production system
2019
Abstract The paper describes the collaborative processes and technologies used to develop a prototype for a Cyber-Physical Production System of USB sticks. The development of this system follows the model-based approach where co-simulations of different components, detailed at different level of abstractions, serve as a basis for structured dialogue between specialised teams and agreement on shared interactions. The focus is primarily on the co-simulation technology, allowing a gradual increase of fidelity and independent testing and validation of the composing subsystems. This technology may be equally complemented with group decision-making tools to better support the collaboration during…
Fostering Learning and Sustained Improvement: The Influence of Principalship
2009
This article reports on selected findings from the project ‘Revisiting Successful Principals’. The authors revisited some of the schools which participated in the International Successful School Principalship Project (ISSPP) five years ago. In this article they focus on how the principals are positioning themselves as leaders, and how they are involved in the construction of a public self, while responding to questions about fostering learning and sustained improvement. The study confirms that a principal may have a significant influence on a school's policy and in particular the preferred strategies. In addition, the study revealed that, despite the new expectations which are raised towar…
Plastic end-of-life alternatives, with a focus on the agricultural sector
2021
The end of life (EoL) of plastic polymers depends on when they stop being considered a resource and begin to be considered a waste. Even with dynamic management, plastic pollution will increase in the coming decades. Reduction strategies focus on reducing the quantities of materials used in the construction of individual objects for packaging, support for reuse and recycling, incentives for gathering low-value plastics, awareness, and simplification. The agricultural sector, a sector in which the use of plastic is (apparently) not high, needs to combine environmental, social, and above all economic aspects, which can help entrepreneurs in the sector to optimize the recycling process.
Broader impacts of the fare-free public transportation system in Tallinn
2019
In this paper, we focus on the rationale for implementing the fare-free public transportation system (FFPTS) in Tallinn, Estonia, that took place on 1 January 2013. Through a series of interviews w...
