Isolation and characterization of a chlorogenic acid esterase from Aspergillus niger.

1980

Abstract The isolation and characterization of a specific chlorogenic acid esterase is described. The enzyme activity is measured by determination of the hydrolysis product caffeic acid. The enzyme had been concentrated by means of ultrafiltration and column-chromatography. The pH- and temperature optimum were 6.5 and 45 °C respectively. Divalent cations were not required for the enzyme activity. As other esterases, this enzyme is inhibited by di-isopropyl-phosphorofluoridate. The Km-value is 0.70 mᴍ chlorogenic acid, the molecular weight 240000. The described enzyme is specific for chlorogenic acid. On the other hand a typical unspecific esterase like the pig liver esterases does not split…

Methods for Separating Native Enzymes

1994

In the course of electrophoresis the stability of an enzyme depends on such conditions as (a) pH-value, (b) ion strength and ion species, (c) effector molecules, (d) temperature and (e) properties of the separation matrix. These parameters were empirically optimized for starch gel electrophoresis [1–3] and cellulose acetate electrophoresis [4, 5] when analyzing predominantly animal and human specimen. A major advantage of these types of separation media is that practically every buffer system can be used to separate enzymes whereas in disc-gel electrophoresis [6–8] the number of applicable buffer systems is limited. When using isoelectric focusing to separate native enzymes no buffer choice…

Novel acrylamido monomers with higher hydrophilicity and improved hydrolytic stability: II. Properties of N-acryloylaminopropanol

1996

The physico-chemical properties and the electrophoretic behavior of the novel set of monomers reported by (Simo-Alfonso et al., Electrophoresis 1996, 17, 723-731) have been evaluated. Of utmost importance was the combination of high hydrophilicity and extreme hydrolytic stability, most desired properties for, any electrophoretic matrix, especially for protein fractionation. One of these monomers (N-acryloylaminopropanol, AAP) was found indeed to be extremely hydrophilic (with a partition coefficient P of only 0.10, vs. P = 0.13 for N-acryloylaminoethoxyethanol and P = 0.20 for acrylamide) and to possess excellent stability to alkaline hydrolysis. Its hydrolysis constant (0.008 L mol-1 min-1…

X-ray-absorption study of rheniumL3andL1edges inReO3: Multiple-scattering approach

1993

We present ab initio calculations of x-ray-absorption fine structure for the Re L 3 and L 1 edges in crystalline ReO 3 based on an exact curved-wave multiple-scattering approach. Good agreement between theoretical and experimental data has been found for both edges. We show that, as expected, the contribution of multiple-scattering signals from linear chains, like Re-O-Re and O-Re-O, is very large both in the L 3 - and L 1 -edge spectra due to the strong focusing effect caused by the middle atom

Nursing Students’ Learning about Person-centred Dementia Care in a Nursing Home : A Qualitative Study

2022

It is unclear to what extent nursing students are able to apply person-centred care in practice, despite a mixture of educational support approaches. The aim of this study was to explore nursing students’ experiences of learning about person-centred dementia care after they participated in an adopted education programme in a nursing home. The education programme presented the main concepts of person-centred care. A qualitative explorative design was chosen where 32 bachelor-level nursing students participated in seven focus groups. The study is reported according to the COREQ checklist. Qualitative thematic content analysis revealed two main themes: care culture in the nursing home as joyf…

Social- and Health Care Educators’ Cultural Competence

2020

Introduction and aim: Cultural differences have significant impacts on classroom behaviours and communication in teaching. The aim of this study is to explore social and healthcare educators’ cultural competence in transcultural education. Methodology: Data was collected from semi-structured focus group interviews at universities of applied sciences and vocational colleges. Inductive content analysis was used in the analysis process. Results: Educators’ cultural competence in transcultural education emerges as generic categories: transcultural education, educatorship and ethical attitudes, and underpins by the sub-categories: language and linguistics, different learning styles, integrating …

Towards an efficient meshfree solver

2016

In this paper we focus on the enhancement in accuracy approximating a function and its derivatives via smoothed particle hydrodynamics. We discuss about improvements in the solution by reformulating the original method by means of the Taylor series expansion and by projecting with the kernel function and its derivatives. The accuracy of a function and its derivatives, up to a fixed order, can be simultaneously improved by assuming them as unknowns of a linear system. The improved formulation has been assessed with gridded and scattered data points distribution and the convergence has been analyzed referring to a case study in a 2D domain.

The Key Concepts of Ethics of Artificial Intelligence

2018

The growing influence and decision-making capacities of Autonomous systems and Artificial Intelligence in our lives force us to consider the values embedded in these systems. But how ethics should be implemented into these systems? In this study, the solution is seen on philosophical conceptualization as a framework to form practical implementation model for ethics of AI. To take the first steps on conceptualization main concepts used on the field needs to be identified. A keyword based Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) on the keywords used in AI and ethics was conducted to help in identifying, defying and comparing main concepts used in current AI ethics discourse. Out of 1062 papers retrieve…

Corporate board and default risk of financial firms

2022

This paper analyses the impact of corporate board structure on default risk of European banking firms. We focus on four core aspects of boards that have been addressed in Directive 2013/36/ EU to strengthen the corporate governance of banks: the size of boards, their independence, the participation of female directors and CEO duality. We employ panel data analysis to study the 109 European listed banks between 2002 and 2019. Default risk is estimated by Merton’s (1974) distance to default. We take into account the presence of unobservable heterogeneity, simultaneity and dynamic endogeneity and estimate the model using the dynamic difference and dynamic system GMM methodologies. The results …
