Human haarscheiben, epidermal Merkel cell-rich sensory organs of hairy skin, were studied for the expression of various cytokeratin (CK) polypeptides and other epithelial and neuronal differentiation markers by applying immunoperoxidase and immunofluorescence microscopy to frozen sections and by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. The basal clusters of Merkel cells were specifically detected by antibodies against CK 20. Haarscheiben keratinocytes were unique mainly by the prominent expression of CK 17 in the lower and middle layers. The FF is derived from the sanguineous plasma and secretions, synthesised in the follicle wall, that contain a large variety of growth factors, cytokines, amino acids, and other metabolites. Background To compare the histologic diagnosis of lesions associated with impacted teeth from a South African population with literature data. Material and Methods A retrospective cross-sectional survey of tissue specimens associated with impacted teeth that were analyzed in the Department of Oral Pathology (University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa) between 1996 and 2016. Patient age, gender, impacted tooth location and the histologic diagnosis were recorded for statistical analysis. Results Odontogenic pathology was diagnosed in 389 (95.6%) specimens while dental follicle comprised 4.4% of tissue submissions. Dermal non-neural granular cell tumor (NNGCT) was first described in 1991 as an S100-negative polypoid non-melanocytic tumor. Although originally introduced in the literature as a primary cutaneous tumor, it was later emphasized that such qualification could not be held until the line of differentiation was clarified. It was also demonstrated that not all cases were polypoid. In the current study we try to further characterize this entity by presenting 5 cases of NNGCT. As expected, not all of them were polypoid.
