Effects of sex and menstrual cycle phase on cardiac response and alpha- amylase levels in psychosocial stress.

2018

The impact of sex and the menstrual cycle phase on the autonomic response to psychosocial stress remains controversial. This study explored autonomic nervous system activity through salivary alpha-amylase, heart rate, and heart rate variability responses to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) in healthy young people. The sample was composed of 25 men, 26 women in the luteal phase, and 25 women in the follicular phase, from 18 to 25 years of age. Participants were exposed to the TSST or a control condition. The results indicate that women in their follicular phase showed a blunted alpha-amylase response to stress compared to men and women in the luteal phase. In addition, men showed higher s…

Acute pre-learning stress and declarative memory: impact of sex, cortisol response and menstrual cycle phase.

2012

This study explores the influence of pre-learning stress on performance on declarative memory tasks in healthy young adults in relation to sex and menstrual cycle phase. The sample was composed of 119 students (32 men and 87 women) from 18 to 25 years of age. The women were tested in different hormonal stages (30 in follicular phase, 34 in luteal phase, and 23 using oral contraceptives). The participants were exposed to the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) or a control condition. Afterwards, their memory performance was measured using a standardized memory test (Rey's Auditory Verbal Learning Test). In the control condition, all groups of women recalled more words than men, but these differe…

Antral Follicle Priming Before Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection in Previously Diagnosed Low Responders: A Randomized Controlled Trial (FOLLPRIM).

2015

A low response to controlled ovarian hyperstimulation implies a reduced number of embryos and impaired pregnancy rate. Follicular priming with steroids before controlled ovarian hyperstimulation has been suggested to improve the subsequent ovarian response. The purpose of this study was to determine the best follicular priming protocol in low responders and to investigate the intrafollicular mechanisms triggered by steroid hormone priming. This was a single-center, randomized, parallel, open-label, controlled trial, in two phases. The setting was a university-based in vitro fertilization unit.Potential low responders (n = 99) underwent a first intracytoplasmic sperm injection cycle. Confirmed …

Trends in excess mortality in follicular lymphoma at a population level

2015

Background Since the 1990s and since the development of humanised monoclonal antibodies in 1998, the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma has undergone profound changes. Follicular lymphoma (FL) was the first to benefit from this treatment, and several clinical trials have shown a significant improvement in overall survival, but little information is available at a population level. Objective Our objective was to estimate changes in FL-specific mortality at a population level, with an appropriate methodology. Methods Two French retrospective population-based studies on FL were conducted, one from 1995 to 2004, in 1477 patients, and one from 1995 to 2010, in 451 patients. Trends in excess morta…

The epidemiology, treatment, and complication of ameloblastoma in East-Indonesia

2018

Background Ameloblastoma is a neoplasm classified as a benign epithelial odontogenic tumor of the jaws, grow slowly and are locally invasive. The aim of the present study was to investigate the incidence, treatment, and complication of patients with ameloblastoma in East-Indonesia during six years retrospective study. Material and Methods This retrospective study included 84 patients who were diagnosed with ameloblastoma from 2011 to 2016. There were 56 patients with treatment data available. Data from each patient, including gender, age, histologic type, the size of the tumor, radiologic form, tumor location, type of treatment, and complication were reviewed and analyzed retrospectively. Prognostic Factors Determining Long-Term Survival in Well-Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: An Analysis of Four Hundred Eighty-Four Patients Undergoing …

2003

Identification of the prognostic factors relevant for long-term survival in differentiated thyroid cancer in a homogenously treated patient cohort in order to allow a better initial risk stratification.Four hundred eighty-four (358 females/126 males) patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (330 papillary [68.2%]; 154 follicular [31.8%]) were included. Inclusion criteria consisted of treatment with a uniform therapy scheme and continuous aftercare in the same institution. Initial diagnosis was between 1975-1995 (age at diagnosis, 14-84 years, median, 49.7). Tumor stage: pT1, n = 92; pT2, 211; pT3, 58; pT4, 123. Low-risk:or=pT3 NX M0, 331; high-risk pT4 and/or M1, 153. Reduced intensity conditioning HLA identical sibling donor allogeneic stem cell transplantation for patients with follicular lymphoma: long-term foll…

2010

Background Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is an effective treatment for patients with poor risk lymphoma, at least in part because of the graft-versus-lymphoma effect. Over the past decade, reduced intensity conditioning regimens have been shown to offer results similar to those of conventional high-dose conditioning regimens but with lower toxicity early after transplantation, especially in patients with chemosensitive disease at transplant. Design and Methods The aim of this study was to analyze the long-term outcome of patients with follicular lymphoma who received an HLA identical sibling allogeneic stem cell transplant with a reduced intensity conditioning regimen w…

The effectiveness of decompression as initial treatment for jaw cysts : a 10-year retrospective study

2018

Background Decompression is an approved alternative to cystectomy in the treatment of jaw cysts. This study aimed to evaluate its effectiveness as an initial procedure, as well as factors with potential to influence outcome. Material and Methods The frequency of decompression was analysed, whether completed in one session or followed by enucleation at the Division of Oral Surgery and Orthodontics, Department of Dental Medicine and Oral Health, Medical University of Graz, from 2005 to 2015. Further analysis focussed on factors potentially influencing outcome: cyst location, histopathology, means of preserving the cyst opening, cyst size, patient age. Results In all, 53 patients with 55 jaw c…

2001

To investigate the influence of human recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) on circulating serum concentrations of the ovarian proteohormones inhibin A, inhibin B, pro alpha-C, and activin A and serum levels of estradiol after down-regulation with GnRH analogue.Serum concentrations of ovarian proteohormones and estradiol.Academic clinical practice.30 women who underwent assisted reproductive techniques.Blood samples were analyzed for inhibin A, inhibin B, pro alpha-C, activin A, and estradiol during IVF treatment at points coinciding with pituitary down-regulation, stimulation with recombinant FSH, ovulatory triggering, and the luteal phase of the cycle.Activin A levels did not cha…

Prevalence of idiopathic hirsutism.

1998

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of idiopathic hirsutism in a large population of hirsute women. Design: 588 hirsute women (mean age 24 6 1, range 15‐36 years) were evaluated as outpatients at the Department of Endocrinology of the University of Palermo, Italy. The diagnosis of idiopathic hirsutism was established in hirsute patients presenting regular ovulatory menstrual cycles and normal serum androgen levels (total testosterone, unbound testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate). Methods: Hirsutism was calculated by the Ferriman-Gallwey-Lorenzo index. Serum androgens were evaluated in the follicular phase (days 5 or 6) and normal androgen ranges were calculated as the mean 6 2…
