Epidemiology and prognosis of synchronous and metachronous colon cancer metastases: a French population-based study.
2014
Epidemiological data on synchronous and metachronous metastatic colon cancer are scarce. We assessed epidemiological characteristics and survival in synchronous and metachronous metastatic colon cancer in a French population. Our study included 932 cases of metastatic colon cancer diagnosed in 1999-2010 and registered in a population-based cancer registry; 758 were synchronous colon metastases and 174 metachronous metastases from resected primary colon cancers diagnosed in 1999-2005. Univariate relative survival was calculated and a multivariate model with proportional hazard applied to net survival by interval was used.Mean age at diagnosis was 71.1 years for patients with metachronous meta…
Plasma lipidome patterns associated with cardiovascular risk in the PREDIMED trial: A case-cohort study.
2017
Abstract Background The study of the plasma lipidome may help to better characterize molecular mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease. The identification of new lipid biomarkers could provide future targets for prevention and innovative therapeutic approaches. In the frame of the PREDIMED trial, our aim was to examine the associations of baseline lipidome patterns or their changes with the risk of clinical CVD events. Methods We included 983 participants in our case-cohort study. The end-point was the incidence of major CVD during 4.8years of median follow-up. We repeatedly measured 202 plasma known lipid metabolites at baseline and after 1-year of intervention. Principal component an…
Phase III study in stage IV non-small-cell lung cancer patients treated with two courses of cisplatin/gemcitabine followed by a randomization to thre…
2007
BACKGROUND: This randomised phase III study investigated if in responsive and stable disease (SD) stage IV patients after two courses of cisplatin and gemcitabine, single-agent gemcitabine (experimental arm) was not inferior in terms of overall survival (OS) to cisplatin-gemcitabine (standard arm). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Noninferiority was defined as an increase in the hazard of death (HR) < or = 1.33 in the experimental arm. From January 2001 to February 2004, 340 patients were registered and 250 were randomised. Cisplatin was administered on day 1 at 75 mg/m2 and Gemcitabine on days 1 and 8 at 1250 mg/m2 every 3 weeks. RESULTS: Response rate after two courses was 29%. The 1-year progressio…
Salvage treatment for children with relapsed/refractory germ cell tumors: The Associazione Italiana Ematologia Oncologia Pediatrica (AIEOP) experienc…
2020
Background Malignant germ cell tumors (GCTs) are a heterogeneous group of rare neoplasms in children. Optimal outcome is achieved with multimodal therapies for patients with both localized and advanced disease, especially after the introduction of platinum-based chemotherapy regimens. In this respect, data on salvage treatment for children with relapsed or platinum-refractory disease are still limited. Methods Retrospective analysis of data regarding patients affected by malignant GCTs with platinum-refractory or relapsed disease after first-line treatment according to AIEOP TCGM 2004 protocol was conducted. Results Twenty-one patients, 15 females and 6 males, were considered for the analys…
Prognostic value of nuclear matrix protein expression in localized prostate cancer.
2012
The aim of the study was to correlate nuclear matrix (NM) protein expression profiles with the risk of PSA progression or death in early prostate cancer (PCa).High-resolution two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) was used to identify tumor-associated NM proteins in the PCa specimens obtained from 94 patients. The association between the expression of each protein and the probability of PSA progression or death was studied through univariate analysis. Unsupervised hierarchical clustering analysis was then used to generate patient clusters showing comparable outcomes by including the proteins that were predictive at univariate analysis. PSA-free and overall survival curves relative to…
Identification of Candidate Polymorphisms on Stress Oxidative and DNA Damage Repair Genes Related with Clinical Outcome in Breast Cancer Patients
2012
Diverse polymorphisms have been associated with the predisposition to develop cancer. On fewer occasions, they have been related to the evolution of the disease and to different responses to treatment. Previous studies of our group have associated polymorphisms on genes related to oxidative stress (rs3736729 on GCLC and rs207454 on XDH) and DNA damage repair (rs1052133 on OGG1) with a predisposition to develop breast cancer. In the present work, we have evaluated the hypothesis that these polymorphisms also play a role in a patient’s survival. A population-based cohort study of 470 women diagnosed with primary breast cancer and a median follow up of 52.44 months was conducted to e…

Mesenteric Lymph Node Involvement in Advanced Ovarian Cancer Patients Undergoing Rectosigmoid Resection: Prognostic Role and Clinical Considerations
2014
Background: The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the incidence of mesenteric lymph node (MLN) involvement, and its prognostic role in advanced ovarian cancer (OC). Methods: OC patients undergoing rectosigmoid resection during primary debulking surgery or interval debulking surgery were recorded. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival were calculated from the date of diagnosis to the date of relapse/progression, death of disease, or the date of last follow-up. Results: MLNs were detected in 102/148 cases (68.9 %); the rate of MLN involvement was 47.0 %. The percentage of metastatic MLNs was higher in cases with >5 MLNs removed compared with cases with ≤5 MLNs …
Survival after curative pelvic exenteration for primary or recurrent cervical cancer a retrospective multicentric study of 167 patients
2014
ObjectiveEvaluate the survival of patients who underwent pelvic exenteration (PE) with curative intent for primary persistent or recurrent cervical cancer.MethodsWe retrospectively investigated 167 consecutive patients, referred to the gynecological oncology units of 4 centers in Germany or Italy, who underwent PE. Data regarding surgery, histology, and oncologic outcomes were collected and statistically evaluated. Survival was determined from the day of exenteration until last follow-up or death.ResultsThe median age was 51 years. Twenty-seven patients (16.2%) underwent PE owing to advanced primary tumors (group A), 34 patients (20.4%) underwent PE owing to persistent cancer after chemothe…
