The relationship between food availability and growth in Mytilus galloprovincialis in the open sea (southern Mediterranean)
1998
Abstract With the aim of gathering information about the possibility of culturing mussels ( Mytilus galloprovincialis ) in a south Mediterranean oligotrophic area, different lots of mussels were placed in culture at depths of −5 m and −15 m and their growth monitored on a monthly basis. Temperature and salinity were measured in situ and water samples were collected at different depths each month. Total suspended matter (TSM) and its inorganic (ISM) and organic (OSM) fractions were analysed by gravimetry and loss on ignition. Photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll- a and phaeopigments), particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON), particulate carbohydrate (CHO), protein (PRT) and lipid…
Pre-Migratory Movements of Adult Montagu's HarriersCircus pygargus
2008
Pre-migratory and migratory movements of Montagu's Harrier Circus pygargus, a long-distance migrant, are poorly documented by ring recoveries and observations. In the present study, we tagged 10 adult Montagu's Harriers in NE Spain with satellite transmitters and tracked their movements until their arrival on the wintering grounds. To identify the end of the breeding season and the onset of the migration based on our satellite-telemetry data we developed and applied a statistical approach, defining the time period between these two events as the pre-migratory stage. We then compared habitat preferences during the breeding season and the pre-migratory stage. The duration of the pre-migratory…
Local food availability affects invasion ability of alien bivalves: an experimental and simulation integrated approach
2009
The Lessepsian bivalve Brachidontes pharaonis is considered as one of 100 worst invasive species in the Mediterranean rapidly colonizing the most part of the Basin. Its current distribution seems primarily due to ship transport of carrying larvae by ballast waters and/or in the fouling attached beneath the ship-keels. Although humanmediated transport seems to potentially in!uence dispersal of invasive species, habitat suitability, temperature, salinity and food availability (i.e. in terms of quality and quantity of organic matter) seem to represent decisive factors in determining survivorship and distribution of this species. Physiological tolerance of B. pharaonis to temperature and salini…
The association between parental education, living arrangements and dietary habits among overweight and obese Norwegian children aged 6-10 years : “F…
2016
Masteroppgave folkehelsevitenskap - Universitetet i Agder 2016 Children´s dietary patterns have changed the passed decades. Children are more overweight and obese, and social inequalities related to this topic are discussed among all societies. The purpose of the master thesis was to explore the association between the sociodemographic factors parental education and living arrangements and the availability and intake of selected food items and total energy intake and macronutrient intake among overweight and obese Norwegian children aged 6-10 years. The thesis is an extension of the theory that is used in the article. This thesis begins with an introduction, which further expands to the ela…
