Possible Clinical Implications of Geographic Differences in Prevalence of Double Transverse Foramen

2019

The double transverse foramen (DBLTF) is a cervical spine anatomic variant. Current literature has presented prevalence values of DBLTF in Caucasian Mediterranean subjects that seem to be higher than those observed in other samples of subjects. Therefore we aimed to test if Caucasian Mediterranean subjects present a higher prevalence of the DBLTF than sub-Saharan African subjects. We analyzed the presence of DBLTF in cervical spines of 100 skeletons from Caucasian Mediterranean subjects and 91 skeletons from sub-Saharan African subjects, resulting in a total of 1337 cervical vertebrae having been studied. No DBLTF was found in vertebrae C1, C2, and C3. The pattern of prevalence observed in al…

Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography of the choroid in idiopathic macular hole: A cross-sectional prospective study.

2010

Purpose To determine the choroidal thickness in the macular area in patients with idiopathic macular hole in one eye and an unaffected fellow eye and in healthy controls. Design Cross-sectional, prospective study. Methods Twenty-two patients with a full-thickness unilateral idiopathic macular hole and 22 age- and sex-matched controls were recruited. Enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography images were obtained by using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. The choroidal thickness was measured in the subfoveal area and 1000 μm and 2000 μm away from the fovea in the nasal and temporal regions. The diameter of the macular hole and the axial length were determined. Results Ch…

CBCT location of the fusion between the buccal and lingual cortical in the mandibular ramus : importance to sagittal split osteotomy

2016

Background Mandibular Sagittal Split Osteotomy (MSSO) is a popular technique in orthognathic surgery used both to advance and to retreat the mandible. However, MSSO may incur in important complications, such as bad splits and sensorineural injuries. Knowing the location of the fusion between the buccal and lingual cortical (FBLC) in the mandibular ramus and the bone thickness in the region where osteotomies will be performed is determinant in MSSO planning to avoid complications. The aim of this study was to document and evaluate possible differences between sexes regarding the location of the FBLC in relation to the superior cortical of mandibular foramen (MF) and bone thickness in the reg…

Global variation in anastomosis and end colostomy formation following left-sided colorectal resection

2019

Background: End colostomy rates following colorectal resection vary across institutions in high-income settings, being influenced by patient, disease, surgeon and system factors. This study aimed to assess global variation in end colostomy rates after left-sided colorectal resection. Methods: This study comprised an analysis of GlobalSurg-1 and -2 international, prospective, observational cohort studies (2014, 2016), including consecutive adult patients undergoing elective or emergency left-sided colorectal resection within discrete 2-week windows. Countries were grouped into high-, middle- and low-income tertiles according to the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI). Factors associ…

Cardiac sources of cerebral embolism in people with migraine

2021

Background and purpose Whether the reported association between migraine with aura (MA) and cardioembolic stroke may be explained by a higher rate of atrial fibrillation (AF) or by other potential cardiac sources of cerebral embolism remains to be determined. Methods In the setting of a single centre cohort study of consecutive patients with acute brain ischaemia stratified by migraine status, the association between AF as well as patent foramen ovale (PFO) and migraine was explored. Results In all, 1738 patients (1017 [58.5%] men, mean age 67.9 +/- 14.9 years) qualified for the analysis. Aging was inversely associated with migraine, whilst women had a >3-fold increased disease risk (odds …

Different Hydraulic Constructs to Optimize the Venous Drainage of DIEP Flaps in Breast Reconstruction: Decisional Algorithm and Review of the Literat…

2020

Venous congestion is the most common perfusion-related complication of deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap. Several hydraulic constructs can be created for venous superdrainage in case of flap venous engorgement or as a preventive measure. These can be classified based on the choice of the draining vein of the flap, either a second deep inferior epigastric vein (DIEV) or a superficial inferior epigastric vein (SIEV), and of the recipient vein, either a vein of the chest or the DIEV. Background Venous congestion is the most common perfusion-related complication of deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap. Several hydraulic constructs can be created for venou…

Suborbital climate variability during Marine Isotopic Stage 5 in the central Mediterranean basin: evidence from calcareous plankton record

2006

Abstract New faunal and floral records from Ocean Drilling Project Hole 963A, resolved at ∼80-year spacing, provide evidence of suborbital scale climate variability in the central Mediterranean Sea throughout Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5. Cold events in the central Mediterranean Sea, indicated by low abundances of warm species and high abundances of cold species, are also evident in a planktonic foraminifera paleoclimatic curve. They have been linked to NGRIP Greenland ice core “C” events and appear correlative with similar sub-millennial climate fluctuations identified in the North Atlantic region and in the Alboran Basin (Westernmost Mediterranean). Low-resolution benthic and planktonic O…

Palaeoenvironments and Quaternary foraminifera in the Elx coastal lagoon (Alicante, Spain)

2010

Abstract During the Quaternary, different palaeoenvironments characterised the Elx coastal lagoon (‘Albufera d'Elx’) located in the easternmost sector of the Betic Ranges (SE Spain). Micropalaeontological and sedimentological analysis of three drilled cores allowed characterization of different sedimentary environments, including alluvial, restricted lagoon, lagoon with marine connection, shoreface, foreshore, backshore, swamp, washover fan, and back-barrier flat. A model of the evolution of this region during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 7 is proposed, based on chronostratigraphic correlation between the cores. Up to six transgressive episodes can be recognised, mostly represented by calcare…
