CONVENTIONAL INTERNAL LIMITING MEMBRANE PEELING VERSUS INVERTED FLAP FOR SMALL-TO-MEDIUM IDIOPATHIC MACULAR HOLE

2022

Purpose: To compare conventional internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling versus inverted flap technique in small-to-medium idiopathic macular hole. Methods: Eyes with ≤400 μ m idiopathic macular holes were randomized into the conventional ILM peeling group (25 eyes) and inverted flap group (25 eyes). A 12-month follow-up was considered. Macular sensitivity (MS) change detected with MP-1 microperimetry was the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes included best-corrected visual acuity change, closure rate, anatomical findings on optical coherence tomography such as U-shape foveal contour, restoration of external limiting membrane, and ellipsoid zone. Results: In both groups, MS improved throu…

Influence of Instrument Size on the Accuracy of Different Apex Locators: An In Vitro Study

2008

The aim of this in vitro investigation was to determine the accuracy of 4 different electronic apex locators (EALs) with 3 different instrument sizes. For this study 146 roots were embedded in an agar solution. Electronic measurements were made to the physiologic foramen (apical constriction) with the Elements Apex Locator, Justy II, Raypex 5, and ProPex II and K-type files sizes 08, 10, and 15. Statistical significances were calculated with the sign test (P < .001). Exact measurements to the physiologic foramen were made with the Elements Apex Locator, 36.99%, 39.04%, and 44.93%; Justy II, 38.62%, 32.41%, and 43.41%; Raypex 5, 42.76%, 39.31%, and 39.06%; and ProPex II, 38.62%, 43.45%, and …

Correlation coefficients in human skulls: Significant sexual differences

1987

This study of 500 male and female skulls proves: significant differences of correlation coefficients (p less than or equal to 0.01) occur between the two sexes. The combined variables are: 1. bizygomatic breadth (45)/skull base length (5) 2. bizygomatic breadth (45)/foramen magnum length (7) 3. bizygomatic breadth (45)/foramen magnum breadth (16) 4. bizygomatic breadth (45)/basion-bregma height (17) 5. foramen magnum breadth (16)/skull base length (5) Female skulls have generally higher correlation coefficients values than males which is interpreted as an indication of homogeneous growth.

Three canals in the mesial root of mandibular first permanent molars: a clinical study

1989

Traditional teaching of the anatomy of root canals in different teeth can lead clinicians into the misguided belief that a predetermined number of root canals is always present in any given tooth. A new understanding of the root canal system has enabled the location of additional canals. Results of the clinical study of 760 first mandibular molars, showed that 20 (2.6 per cent) had three canals in the mesial root. Of these 20 teeth, 13 (65 per cent) had an intermediate canal which joined the mesiobuccal canal in the apical third. In six cases (30 per cent) it joined the mesiolingual canal in the same area. In only one case did the intermediate or third canal retain its individual nature and…

Panoramic radiographic study of mental foramen in selected dravidians of south Indian population: A hospital based study

2015

Background: This study aimed at documenting information on appearance, size, horizontal and vertical locations of Mental Foramen (MF) in Panoramic Radiograph. We also analyzed the age and gender differences with radiographic appearance and location of MF. We evaluated these findings in our population and co-relate with results of previous studies. Material and Methods: 1662 panoramic radiographs were evaluated, of which 245 fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Each radiograph was traced to record the horizontal and vertical locations. The size of MF was recorded using digital caliper and its appearance was determined by visual examination. Chi-square and t-test were employed. Results: The most…

L’élongation des loges chez les foraminifères planctoniques du Crétacé inférieur: une adaptation à la sous-oxygénation des eaux?

1998

Abstract Planktic foraminifera with radially elongated chambers appeared on four occasions in the early Cretaceous of the Vocontian Basin (SE France). These appearances coincided with or followed the deposition of organic rich levels which are evidence of hypoxic to anoxic conditions at the sea-floor. In addition, oxygen deficient surface waters are inferred from the occasional presence of Hedbergellas with deformed (insufficiently calcified) walls. It is suggested that the elongation of the chambers of these foraminifera was an adaptive response to the low oxygen content of surface waters, the increased surface area of the test allowing better gas exchange with sea water and the intake of …

Cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica) productivity, proximal composition and soil parameters as affected by planting time and agronomic management in a …

2021

Study of appropriate planting time and response to agronomic management practices is imperative for the newly introduced cactus pear (Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill.) into a semi-arid region of India. Responses of cactus pear to agronomic practices (planting time and irrigation and fertilizer application) were evaluated to determine the potential for fodder production and livestock feed in a semi-arid environment of India. We assessed four planting times (February, March, July and October) and two agronomic managements (with and without irrigation and fertilizer application) during 2016–2020 at Jhansi, India. Cactus pear establishment and growth improved with planting time in July and Octob…

Social information use by predators : expanding the information ecology of prey defences

2022

Social information use is well documented across the animal kingdom, but how it influences ecological and evolutionary processes is only just beginning to be investigated. Here we evaluate how social transmission may influence species interactions and potentially change or create novel selection pressures by focusing on predator-prey interactions, one of the best studied examples of species coevolution. There is extensive research into how prey can use social information to avoid predators, but little synthesis of how social transmission among predators can influence the outcome of different stages of predation. Here we review evidence that predators use social information during 1) encount…
