Miocene lithological, foraminiferal and palynological data from the Belverde borehole (Portugal)

2021

XVIII Jornadas de Paleontología, 2002 Preliminary data on litho stratigraphy and biostratigraphy of the Belverde borehole (http://www. dct.Jct.unl.pt/ SondagemISondagem/colunalindex_col.html) is presented. The borehole attained 619,77 m of depth, crossing 130 m of Plio-Pleistocene and 460 m of Miocene dep osits. Main lithologies are fine sands , marl s and biocalcarenites. A coral reef was recognized in the lower part of the borehole (530-585 m). Gamma ray, neutrons and sonic diagraphies were obtained. Eight 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ages (H. Elderfield, Cambridge University)and the presence of some of the main planktonic foraminifera markers were used to establish the chronostratigraphic framewor…

2000

PURPOSE: To evaluate results and prognostic factors of pars-plana vitrectomy (ppv) using membrane peeling and C2F6-gas for diabetic traction retinal detachments with a hole. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the healing course of 84 eyes, which were treated in this way consecutively (follow-up 6-32 month). C2F6 was always used in case of a retinal hole at the posterior pole or in the upper part of the eye. The influence of HBA1c, type of diabetes, preoperative visual acuity, preoperative laser-coagulation and macular status over treatment results and rate of complications were studied using multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Preoperatively 56% of the eyes showed premacul…

Age-dependent responses to alarm calls depend on foraging activity in Willow TitsPoecile montanus

2011

Survivorship in animals depends on both foraging activities and avoidance of predation, and thus behavioural decisions often reflect a trade-off between predation risk and foraging efficiency. In this experimental study, we compared behavioural responses of free-living adult and juvenile Willow Tits Poecile montanus to a conspecific alarm call in two treatments. The alarm call was played back when a focal bird was either not feeding, or feeding on a sunflower seed on the middle part of a spruce branch. When feeding at the time of the alarm call, juveniles more often stayed motionless or moved shorter distances than adults. Our results suggest that in hierarchical groups, juveniles are force…

Evolution of foraging ecology in Fennoscandian tits ( Parus spp.)

1994

Species belonging to the same genus exploit similar resources in a similar manner. Despite their general similarities in behaviour, they differ in morphology, and these differences are often interpreted as adaptations for use of different resources. Here we report on the relation between morphology, habitat selection and feeding ecology in seven tit species (Parus spp.) in Fennoscandia. A problem previously disregarded in most ecomorphological studies is that members of a guild with closely related species share their common ancestry. This historical legacy causes similarity in ecology and morphology. We have used phylogenetic information with proper comparative methods to reveal the evolut…

Adaptive plasticity of blue tits(Parus caeruleus)and great tits(Parus major)breeding in natural and semi‐natural insular habitats

2004

The breeding performance and foraging of blue and great tits, and the abundance of arthropods living on the trees of an oak-wood and of a coniferous reafforestation were studied in Sicily, in order to: 1) compare breeding parameters in natural and semi-natural habitats within the same area; 2) estimate the degree of overlap in peak resource and peak demand of young tits, and the overlap of nestling diet of the two species in the two habitats. Both species had earlier laying dates, laid more eggs and raised more fledglings in the oakwood than in the reafforestation; they achieved the same fledging success within the same habitat type. These differences are probably due to the earlier and hig…

Tissue reaction to sealing materials: different view at biocompatibility

2010

Abstract The biodegradability of root canal sealers in areas other than the root canal system is crucial to the overall success rate of endodontic treatment. The aim of the present study was to investigate, the cell and tissue reaction to GuttaFlow and AHPlus, both in vitro and in vivo. For the in vitro experiments the materials were incubated with Human Periodontal Ligament Fibroblasts and cell proliferation and cytotoxicity analyses were performed. Additional fluorescence-microscope stainings were carried out in order to visualize cell growth and morphology. For assessment of the tissue reaction to the materials a subcutaneous implantation model in Wistar rats was employed and the inflamm…

Structural heteropolysaccharides as air-tight sealants of the human pleura

2018

Pulmonary "air leaks," typically the result of pleural injury caused by lung surgery or chest trauma, result in the accumulation of air in the pleural space (pneumothorax). Air leaks are a major source of morbidity and prolonged hospitalization after pulmonary surgery. Previous work has demonstrated structural heteropolysaccharide (pectin) binding to the mouse pleural glycocalyx. The similar lectin-binding characteristics and ultrastructural features of the human and mouse pleural glycocalyx suggested the potential application of these polymers in humans. To investigate the utility of pectin-based polymers, we developed a simulacrum using freshly obtained human pleura. Pressure-decay leak t…

Infrared Thermography. An in Vitro Study on Its Use as Diagnostic Test in Dentistry

2017

Pulp tissue consists of richly vascularized and innervated tissue with a very small circulatory access zone (the apical foramen) [1]. The amount and quality of pulp tissue can only be determined using histological techniques, which imply necrosis of the tissue [2].
