Floor of the mouth hemorrhage subsequent to dental implant placement in the anterior mandible

2019

Abstract Complications in dental implant surgery are possible. Bleeding complications have been described that may be serious, particularly in the floor of the mouth. We present two cases of sublingual hematomas during dental implant osteotomies that impeded but did not close the airway. The clinical courses of these patient’s complications are reviewed. One patient had immediate hematoma formation while the other developed a hematoma overnight, presenting the next day. The treatment rendered was a precautionary in-hospital tracheotomy for the first patient and only compression control for the second. Bleeding complications during dental implant placement in the anterior mandible can be ser…

ALGORITHM OF PARTIAL BREAST RECONSTRUCTION WITH PEDICLED PERFORATOR FLAPS

2010

INTRODUCTION: The authors present an algorithm of partial breast reconstruction following quadrantectomy that allows to restore the breast volume defect with the use of pedicled perforator flaps. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between March 2009 and May 2010, at the Plastic and Reconstructive Institute of University of Palermo, pedicled perforator flaps were used to integrate volume and/or breast skin in 12 patients after benign and malignant breast tumors. The flaps used were based on perforators of the thoraco-dorsal artery (TDAP) and of the intercostal arteries (ICAP). TDAP flaps were used to reconstruct defects in any breast quadrant, while ICAP perforator were used to reconstruct lateral and ce…

Comparison of the shaping characteristics of Neolix and Protaper Universal systems in preparation of severely-curved simulated canals

2017

Background The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the shaping characteristics of two types of nickel-titanium endodontic file systems with regard to the following parameters: Canal straightening, Canal deviation and Instrumentation time. Material and Methods Fifty severely curved canals simulated in resin blocks were prepared to an apical size 25 using Protaper Universal orNeolix systems (n=25 canals/group). The angle of canal curvature was determined before and after instrumentation. Pre- and post-operative images were superimposed to determine any canal deviation. The instrumentation time was also recorded. The data were statistically analyzed by using independent sample t-test and…

Necrosis of the long process of the incus following stapes surgery: new anatomical observations.

2009

Objectives/Hypothesis: The most frequent complication (generally recognized during revision procedures) following seemingly successful stapedotomies and stapedectomies is necrosis of the long process of the incus. This is currently ascribed to a malcrimped stapes prosthesis or to a compromised blood supply of the incus. The two-point fixation can cause a mucosal injury with a resulting toxic reaction, and also osteoclastic activity. An important aspect in the engineering of ideal stapes prostheses is that they should be fixed circularly to the long process of the incus with appropriate strength. The objective of this study was to compare current knowledge relating to the blood supply of the…

Spatial Memory Drives Foraging Strategies of Wolves, but in Highly Individual Ways

2022

The ability of wild animals to navigate and survive in complex and dynamic environments depends on their ability to store relevant information and place it in a spatial context. Despite the centrality of spatial memory, and given our increasing ability to observe animal movements in the wild, it is perhaps surprising how difficult it is to demonstrate spatial memory empirically. We present a cognitive analysis of movements of several wolves (Canis lupus) in Finland during a summer period of intensive hunting and den-centered pup-rearing. We tracked several wolves in the field by visiting nearly all GPS locations outside the den, allowing us to identify the species, location and timing of ne…

El discurso de la Corona

1994

Feeding Dairy Ewes with Fresh or Dehydrated Sulla (Sulla coronarium L.) Forage. 2. Effects on Cheese Enrichment in Bioactive Molecules

2022

Sulla is a tanniferous legume species largely used as fresh or preserved forage in the ruminants’ diets. Due to its content in polyphenols with antioxidant activity, especially condensed tannins (CT), fresh sulla forage (FSF), when eaten by ruminants, is able to enrich animal products with antioxidant molecules and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) that are beneficial for consumers’ health. Dehydration represents a valid alternative to haymaking to preserve these properties also in periods when FSF is unavailable. In this research, the effects of ewes’ diets based on sulla hay (SH), pelleted dehydrated sulla forage (DSF) or FSF were evaluated on cheese physico-chemical tr…

Chemical and acidic composition of Longissimus dorsi muscle of Comisana lambs fed with Trifolium subterraneum and Lolium multiflorum

2010

Aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of grazing on Trifolium subterraneum and Lolium multiflorum, as pure or associated crops, on the chemical composition and on the fatty acid profile of the intramuscular lipids of the meat of lambs. Forty Comisana male lambs, on average weighing 13.75±1.90 kg, were divided into four homogenous groups of ten and called, in relation to the diet: group T those grazing on T. subterraneum; Group L on L. multiflorum; Group TL on adjacent monocultures of T. subterraneum and L. multiflorum (66.6 and 33.3% of surface, respectively); Group LT on adjacent monocultures of T. subterraneum and L. multiflorum (33.3 and 66.6% of surface, respectively). Every 10 …

In vivo digestibility and nutritive value of Atriplex halimus alone and mixed with wheat straw

2002

In vivo digestibility trials were carried out using six young rams fed with Atriplex halimus biomass harvested in summer (A) and in early autumn (B), and with a mixture of mid-autumn Atriplex halimus and wheat straw (5[ratio ]1 ratio on fresh matter basis) (C). Atriplex halimus had a high protein content (139·0, 135·9 and 193·4 g/kg DM in A, B and C respectively), but was rich in sodium chloride, especially in summer (145·9 g/kg DM), limiting its use as feed. The summer forage had a higher organic matter (OM) digestibility coefficient than the autumn forage (0·663 v. 0·530) but lower digestible OM intake (16·8 v. 29·4 g/day per kg BW0·75). In autumn forage, the combination with straw did no…

Orbitally induced limestone/marlstone rhythms in the Albian—Cenomanian Cismon section (Venetian region, northern Italy): Sedimentology, calcareous an…

1996

Abstract A multidisciplinary study of the upper Albian—Cenomanian portion of the Cismon section (Venetian region, northern Italy) was undertaken in order to characterize the cyclic alternations of carbonate-rich and carbonate-poor layers and to investigate their possible origin and cyclic patterns. Limestone semicouplets are characterized by abundant radiolarians and micarbs (micron-sized calcitic fragments), common planktonic foraminifera, strong bioturbation, good oxygenation as expressed by the Mn* and V/(V+Ni) parameters, high Si/Al ratio, low K/Al, in the absence of pyrite and organic matter. The marlstone semicouplets are, on the contrary, frequently laminated, rich in pyrite and orga…
