Complications in third molar removal: A retrospective study of 588 patients

2010

Objectives: Surgical removal of third molars is a regular surgical procedure, which like all operations, may have complications. The purpose of the study was to analyze the incidence of complications and their relationship with the surgical difficulty in a group of 588 patients treated by the same oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Study design: This retrospective cohort study consisted of 1699 third molars (M3) removed between 2005 and 2008. The teeth were grouped into a 6-class scale of surgical difficulty rated according to the surgical procedure description in the patient?s file: I: upper M3 requiring forceps only; II: upper M3 requiring osteotomy; III: upper M3 requiring osteotomy and too…

Closed foldable capsular rings

2004

A new foldable capsular tension and bending ring system with a sharp-edged design is described. The closed foldable capsular rings (CFCR) consist of 8 hydrophobic and 8 hydrophilic ring segments. The CFCRs have a 9.2 mm minimum overall diameter. The CFCRs were inserted using various cartridge systems or a two-folded technique with a forceps. The CFCRs were implanted after phacoemulsification through a small (1.6 to 3.2 mm) incision in 104 human adult eyes without intraoperative complications. No postoperative complications such as capsule folds or inward bending were observed over a 6-month follow-up. Posterior capsule opacification was minimal or absent in all eyes.

Direct transnasal cholangioscopy with ultraslim endoscopes: a one-step intraductal balloon-guided approach.

2011

Background Direct cholangioscopy using an ultraslim endoscope is an attractive alternative to the conventional mother–baby endoscope system because it provides a single-operator platform and high-resolution image quality and allows advanced therapeutic interventions. However, biliary access is cumbersome and usually requires previous guidewire placement via retrograde cholangiography. Objective To evaluate the feasibility of a 1-step transnasal cholangioscopy (TNC) technique using an ultraslim endoscope with an intraductal balloon to maintain access without previous guidewire placement. Design Prospective, observational clinical feasibility study. Setting Single tertiary referral center. Ma…

Forceps size and immune function in the earwig Forficula auricularia L.

2007

Females of many species select their mates on the basis of the size or intensity of sexual ornaments, and it has been suggested that these provide reliable signals of a male’s ability to resist parasites and pathogens. European earwigs, Forficula auricularia, are sexually dimorphic in forceps shape and length. Male forceps are used as weapons in male contests for access to females, but recent findings suggest that females also choose males on the basis of their forceps length. In the present study, we tested the hypotheses that in the European earwig, F. auricularia, the size of forceps is correlated with immune function and that immune function differs between the sexes. We found that enca…

Technique for Performing Rectoscopy

1979

After positioning of the patient (Figs. 1 and 11), the instrument is introduced into the anus. The anal canal runs diagonally toward the navel. This distance must be passed blindly. The instrument is therefore guided through this area with the help of the obturator, which is promptly removed after passage of the instrument through the anal canal.

Minor salivary gland biopsy in Sjögren's syndrome: a review and introduction of a new tool to ease the procedure

2013

Objectives: To review the existing techniques for minor salivary gland biopsy (MSGB) in the lip and to suggest a new approach to ease the procedure and reduce post-operative complications. Study Design: A comprehensive literature review and a descriptive study of a new surgical technique. Results: Diverse incisions have been suggested for MSGB with different designs (ellipse, circular, linear), different directions (parallel, oblique, vertical) and a wide range of lengths (from 1 mm up to 3 cm), but no comparative studies supporting the advantages of a particular type of incision over the others could be retrieved. A variety of features of the existing techniques for MSGB are linked to unde…

Oral myiasis in a cerebral palsy patient: A case report

2010

Myiasis is a rare condition caused by the invasion of tissues by the larvae of flies, mainly from the order of Diptera. Many cases of myiasis involving various human organs have been reported. Oral Myiasis is very rare in healthy persons. It occurs mainly in the tropics and is usually associated with inadequate personal and public hygiene; sometimes accompanied by poor manual dexterity. We present a case of oral myiasis in a mentally retarded, 13- year-old boy suffering with cerebral palsy. The diagnosis was based on the characteristic clinical features and the visualization of wriggling larvae. Large numbers of larvae were found in the gingival sulcus. Treatment consisted of manual removal…

Percutaneous transrenal catheter retrieval.

1984

Percutaneous transrenal catheter retrieval was successfully performed in 6 of 7 patients using the percutaneous transrenal access. Three broken nephrostomy tubes and 3 indwelling splints were extracted. The instruments used were deflecting guide wire in 1, grasping forceps in 2, and Dormia stone basket in 3 instances. No complications were encountered.

Verschlußikterus: histologische Diagnostik durch perkutane endoluminale Gallengangsbiopsie

1991

32 forceps biopsies were performed in 30 patients with obstructive jaundice during percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage procedures. In one patient an adequate specimen could not be obtained. In 25 of the remaining 31 cases diagnosis was confirmed histologically (malignant tumours: n = 22, benign stricture: n = 3). In 6 patients false-negative results were obtained. Transluminal biopsy is an easily performed adjunct to percutaneous transhepatic diagnostic interventions with minimal additional discomfort for the patient. In many cases percutaneous needle biopsy can be avoided. Forceps biopsy enables nonoperative histological diagnosis of small carcinomas of the bile ducts.
