The serendipitous impact of COVID-19 pandemic: A rare opportunity for research and practice

2020

Highlights • The Covid-19 pandemic is a rare opportunity to examine some fundamental aspects of IM and IS research and practice. • There are at least three areas where the pandemic has impacted practice: information management, work practices and design of technologies. • The IS discipline has appropriate methods and theories to study the design of technologies and social interactions. • Concepts such as “social distancing” that has emerged in the pandemic need to be studied through philosophical premises. • The IM practices that emerge after the pandemic is over, will be shaped by how well we seize the opportunity to learn from the pandemic.

Selective area vapor-phase epitaxy and structural properties of Hg1 − xCdxTe on sapphire

1997

Selective area (SA) Hg1 − xCdxTesapphire layers have been grown using the recently developed technique of the vapor-phase epitaxy (VPE) of Hg1 − xCdxTe layers on CdTesapphire heteroepitaxial substrates (HS), which we have called “VPE on HS technique” (Sochinskii et al., J. Crystal Growth 149 (1995) 35; 161 (1996) 195). First, planar CdTe (1 1 1) 5–7 μm thick layers were grown on sapphire (0 0 0 1) wafers by metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy (MOVPE) at 340°C for 1–2.5 h using dimethylcadmium and di-isopropyltellurium as precursors. Second, CdTe/sapphire mesas were formed using standard photolithography in the form of alternating parallel linear arrays consisting of 500 × 70 μm2 elements. Thir…

Precision luminosity measurements at LHCb

2014

Measuring cross-sections at the LHC requires the luminosity to be determined accurately at each centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$. In this paper results are reported from the luminosity calibrations carried out at the LHC interaction point 8 with the LHCb detector for $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.76, 7 and 8 TeV (proton-proton collisions) and for $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5 TeV (proton-lead collisions). Both the "van der Meer scan" and "beam-gas imaging" luminosity calibration methods were employed. It is observed that the beam density profile cannot always be described by a function that is factorizable in the two transverse coordinates. The introduction of a two-dimensional description of the beams improves sig…

Organizing Shared Digital Reading in Groups: Optimizing the Affordances of Text and Medium

2019

Children develop their language when they explore and talk about literary texts. In this study, we explore the design of shared digital reading as a basis for critical reflection on the reading situation in an institutional context with its given opportunities and limitations. We examine six videotaped readings of one specific picture book app, with a focus on the strategies used by teachers in early childhood education and care institutions to control children’s access to the medium and the types of verbal engagement (about the story and about the medium) that are generated by these different strategies. We use qualitative and quantitative analysis of video data. A qualitative categorizat…

‘Dry’ electrochemistry: A non-invasive approach to the characterization of archaeological iron objects

2021

A methodology for monitoring the corrosion state of archaeological iron objects using ‘dry’ open circuit potential (OCP) measurements is described. Application of this technique to a set of objects from La Bastida de les Alcusses archaeological site (Moixent, València, Spain), dating back to the 4th century BCE, reveals significant differences depending on the conservation state. The transient OCP responses (which last between a few seconds and 10–15 min) were superimposed with much shorter (less than one second) intense features. Fil: Doménech Carbó, Antonio. Walking a tightrope - as a next-of-kin to an adolescent or young adult with cancer facing eating difficulties

2022

Purpose: Eating difficulties cause reduced food intake and poor quality of life among adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer. Therefore, next-of-kin eating support is crucial. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of being close to AYAs with cancer in the context of eating when they are at home between high-emetogenic chemotherapy (HEC) sessions. Method: In-depth interviews were conducted with 12 next-of-kin to AYAs (15–29 years old) with oncological or haematological diseases, treated with HEC. Van Manen’s hermeneutic-phenomenological approach guided the design. Results: The essential meaning of the next-of-kin experiences is reflected in the overarching t…

The Highly Collimated Radio Jet of HH 80–81: Structure and Nonthermal Emission

2017

Radio emission from protostellar jets is usually dominated by free-free emission from thermal electrons. However, in some cases, it has been proposed that non-thermal emission could also be present. This additional contribution from non-thermal emission has been inferred through negative spectral indices at centimeter wavelengths in some regions of the radio jets. In the case of HH 80-81, one of the most powerful protostellar jets known, linearly polarized emission has also been detected, revealing that the non-thermal emission is of synchrotron nature from a population of relativistic particles in the jet. This result implies that an acceleration mechanism should be taking place in some pa…

Continuity and Novelty in Kantʼs Historical Conception in The Conflict of the Faculties

2017
