Does vocationally oriented foreign language teaching meet the needs of Finnish and German vocational school students?

This article is based on upper secondary vocational school students’ interviews made in Finland and in Germany in 2016 and in 2017. The study results suggest that in both countries, English language skills are seen as the most important foreign language skills and the students would like to have more vocationally oriented English language classes with focus on authentic spoken language communication. The differences in the educational systems of the two countries might result in differences in students‘ perceptions of whether and to what extent they will actually need foreign languages in their future working life. nonPeerReviewed

Tämä tutkimus käsitteli suomalaisten ja suomenruotsalaisten englannin kielen viestintäarkuutta kvantitatiivisesta ja kvalitatiivisesta näkökulmasta. Tarkoitus oli ensiksi selvittää, miten paljon eng. viestintäarkuutta koettiin yleisesti sekä eri tilanteissa, ja miten tutkitut ryhmät erosivat toisistaan. Measuring something that cannot be grasped – Reflections about Methodology in Elicitation of Spoken Competence

The focus of this article is on reflections about methodology and the methodical choices in empirical research into the role of consciousness in the acquisition of spoken competence in German as second or third foreign language. Seeing language as a complex, dynamic system, I want to show how learning fluctuates. I would like to demonstrate that there is a continuous fluctuation between nonlinearity and stability which depends on particular driving forces. These forces have to be captured by methods whose aim is to increase the certainty of data. These reflections were proved by a case that wants to demonstrate how a multi-methodical approach works in this direction.
Auditory P3a response to native and foreign speech in children with or without attentional deficit

The aim of this study was to investigate the attentional mechanism in speech processing of native and foreign language in children with and without attentional deficit. For this purpose, the P3a component, cognitive neuromarker of the attentional processes, was investigated in a two-sequence two-deviant oddball paradigm using Finnish and English speech items via event-related potentials (ERP) technique. The difference waves reflected the temporal brain dynamics of the P3a response in native and foreign language contexts. Tutkimus tähtää löytämään erilaisia kaksikielisiä opetusmetodeja ja korostamanaan niitä metodeja, jotka opettajat kuvaavat hyvin toimiviksi. Tarkoituksena on myös tarkastella tekijöitä, joita opettajat ottavat huomioon valitessaan kaksikielisen opetusmetodin. Tätä tukimusta voidaan kutsua tapaustutkimukseksi. Se toteutettiin haastatellen neljää opettajaa, jotka työskentelevät Family Centre Klubíčkossa Kroměříž:ssa, Tsekissä. Opettajat haastateltiin pareina teemahaastattelun periaatteita noudattaen. Good and useless FDI: The growth effects of greenfield investment and mergers and acquisitions

We explore the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic growth, distinguishing between mergers and acquisitions (M&As) and “greenfield” investment. A simple model underlines that, unlike greenfield investment, M&As partly represent a rent accruing to previous owners, and do not necessarily contribute to expanding the host country's capital stock. Greenfield FDI should therefore have a stronger impact on growth than M&A sales. This hypothesis is supported by our empirical results that are based on a panel of up to 127 industrialized, emerging, and developing countries over 1990 to 2010.
