Direct interpretation of near-field optical images.

2001

The interpretation of the detection process in near-field optical microscopy is reviewed on the basis of a discussion about the possibility of establishing direct comparisons between experimental images and the solutions of Maxwell equations or the electromagnetic local density of states. On the basis of simple physical arguments, it is expected that the solutions of Maxwell equations should agree with images obtained by collecting mode near-field microscopes, while the electromagnetic local density of states should be considered to provide a practical interpretation of illumination mode near-field microscopes. We review collecting mode near-field microscope images where the conditions to o…

Peculiarities of imaging one- and two-dimensional structures using an electron microscope in the mirror operation mode.

2001

Measurements performed in an electron microscope with the mirror operation mode are most sensitive to local electric fields and geometrical roughness of any kind of the object being studied. The object with a geometrical relief is equivalent to a smooth surface with an effective distribution of microfields. Electrons forming the image interact with the local microfields for an extended time: during approach to the object, deceleration and acceleration away from the object. As a result, the electron trajectories can be strongly distorted, and the contrast changes essentially, leading to image deformation of details of the object under investigation and to lowering of the resolution. These ef…

Imprisoned But Innocent: Wrongful Convictions and Imprisonments in Germany, 1990-2016

2019

Although in the United States wrongful convictions and imprisonments are a major public and scientific concern, this topic has been largely ignored in Germany for decades. The present article offers for the first time an overview of all accessible German cases of successful retrials involving convicted persons who served a prison sentence since 1990. The data refer to 31 wrongfully convicted persons in 29 independent cases. Although the largest group consists of cases of false allegations, some of the wrongly convicted were considered not guilty by reason of insanity, and a few wrongful convictions occurred because of eyewitness misidentification and false confessions. In addition, incorre…

Tödliche Hundebisse im Sektionsgut rechtsmedizinischer Institute

2001

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy associated with polyarteritis nodosa: A case of sudden cardiac death

2018

This case concerns a rare sudden cardiac death characterized by macroscopic and microscopic postmortem findings of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polyarteritis nodosa. A complete autopsy was carried out, and histological and histochemical methods were employed. The cause of death was acute multifocal ischemic myocitolitic damage caused by both myocardial structural alteration attributable to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (widespread interstitial fibrosis and multifocal myocyte disarray) and coronary arteritis attributable to polyarteritis nodosa. This is the first case in which the cause of death was attributed to both diseases.

Extranodal extension of lymph node metastasis is a marker of poor prognosis in oesophageal cancer: A systematic review with meta-analysis

2016

The extranodal extension (ENE) of nodal metastasis is the extension of neoplastic cells through the nodal capsule into the perinodal adipose tissue. This histological feature has recently been indicated as an important prognostic factor in different types of malignancies; in this manuscript, we aim at defining its role in the prognosis of oesophageal cancer with the tool of meta-analysis. Two independent authors searched SCOPUS and PubMed until 31 August 2015 without language restrictions. The studies with available data about prognostic parameters in subjects with oesophageal cancer, comparing patients with the presence of ENE (ENE+) versus only intranodal extension (ENE-), were considered…

Mothers who killed or attempted to kill their child: life circumstances, childhood abuse, and types of killing.

1999

The objectives of the present study were to examine the life circumstances, childhood abuse, and types of homicidal acts of 48 mothers who killed/attempted to kill their children) under age 12 between 1970-96 in Finland. Data on the mothers’ life stresses, psychological problems, and childhood abuse were collected from mental state examination (MSE) reports. The cases were divided into 15 neonaticides and 33 mothers who killed an older child. Childhood abuse was documented in 63% of the mothers’ MSE reports. Qualitative analysis identified neonaticides, joint homicide-suicide attempts, impulsive aggression, psychotic acts, postpartum depression, and abusive acts. Nonlinear principal compone…

Radiation Shielding Study of Advanced Data and Power Management Systems (ADPMS) Housing Using Geant4

2008

The tendency to reduce the spacecraft mass covers nowadays all components of the spacecraft. One potential target is to reduce the mass of electronics and its housings. The use of composite materials, especially CFRP is a well known and vastly used approach to mass reduction. In cost reduction the use of standard (non-space qualified) electronics has increased. These commercial circuits and other components cannot tolerate as high radiation levels as space qualified components. Therefore the use of standard electronics components poses challenge in terms of the radiation protection capability of the ADPMS housings. The main goal of this study is to give an insight on the radiation shielding…

Occupational Safety and Health Risk Assessment in Engineered Nanoparticles Manufacturing Processes

2017

The engineered nanoparticles are more and more entering in Romanian working places, both in research laboratories and in manufacturing processes. Ever increasingly numerous evidence shows that this materials science revolution can generate significant health, safety and environmental hazards, in addition to the social, economic and ethical challenges involvedBased on the precautionary principle recommended be the European Union and a thorough literature review, this research is intended to introduce a framework for further development of an Occupational Health and Safety risk management foundation in this field of concern. Starting from a systematic approach in terms of occupational exposur…
