Missing Evidences in Cancer Genetics: The Retinoblastoma Paradigm

2008

BACKGROUND: Retinoblastoma (Rb) is the most common primary malignant intraocular tumour in childhood. The "two hit" theory, formulated by Knudson in 1971 to explain the variegated clinical expression of the disease, led to the discovery of the so called tumour suppressor genes and the identification of the Rb1 as the prototype of such genes. Mutations of the Rb1 gene are now commonly believed to be the "cause" retinoblastoma, although epidemiological, clinical, and biological evidences argue against it. MATERIAL/METHODS: The Authors have performed a systematic review of available data concerning clinical and diagnostic aspects of retinoblastoma, including molecular genetics. Meta analysis o…

Advance Directives. Comparison of current legislation within the European Union

2021

Abstract Advance Directives have been legally binding in Spain since the publication of Act 41/2002, of 14th November, which regulates patients’ rights to autonomy and obligations concerning clinical information and recording clinical information. However, the situation in each country of the European Union remains heterogeneous and unknown to most health care professionals. By collecting and studying the legislation on patients' rights in European Union countries we have made an updated comparison of the different features of Advance Directives in each country. Only 15 of the 28 European Union Countries have developed specific rules on advance directives which makes them legally binding in…

2016

[Patient safety in the hospital setting and the professional responsibilities of top managers] The authors underline the evolution of legislation concerning the creation of Hospital Companies and the reasons for the implementation of clinical risk management activities, then analyse the responsibilities involving the top figures of the top hospital management. In particular, the authors highlight the obligation and responsibilities of the strategic apex of a Hospital Company and show that, sometimes, the technical consultants – who express a medical-legal advice – underestimate the responsibility of these figures. It is a management responsibility that determines the obvious and inevitable …

Review on the aging mechanisms in Li-ion batteries for electric vehicles based on the FMEA method

2014

With the increasing number of sold electric vehicles, the diagnosis of lithium ion traction batteries will become an important topic. For the development of diagnostic concepts, it is of high importance to have a good overview and knowledge of the internal aging mechanisms which happen inside a single cell. This paper presents a review of existing literature on this topic and summarizes the known aging mechanisms using the FMEA method (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) in order to categorize them and establish the relationship between failure effects and causes. Based on the summarized information, new diagnostic concepts can be developed.

Controversial issues in soft tissue solitary fibrous tumors: A pathological and molecular review

2019

The clinical evolution of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) remains unclear. Although various clinical, morphological and molecular criteria may indicate increased risk of malignancy, some SFT can still progress despite having a clearly benign appearance. Various risk stratification systems have been proposed, but unfortunately they are not sufficient to precisely determine the malignant potential. In this review, we discuss current knowledge on SFT, focusing on the following controversial issues: (i) the diverse morphologic spectrum: 'the great simulator;' (ii) malignant transformation or dedifferentiation; (iii) current risk stratification systems; and (iv) molecular factors associated with cl…

The Law of Service Robots

2014

A vision-based fully automated approach to robust image cropping detection

2020

Abstract The definition of valid and robust methodologies for assessing the authenticity of digital information is nowadays critical to contrast social manipulation through the media. A key research topic in multimedia forensics is the development of methods for detecting tampered content in large image collections without any human intervention. This paper introduces AMARCORD (Automatic Manhattan-scene AsymmetRically CrOpped imageRy Detector), a fully automated detector for exposing evidences of asymmetrical image cropping on Manhattan-World scenes. The proposed solution estimates and exploits the camera principal point, i.e., a physical feature extracted directly from the image content th…

A tribute to Juan Rosai

2021

On July 7, 2020 the world of Surgical Pathology lost one of the brightest minds ever: Prof. Juan Rosai. It certainly happened to many of us while approaching a difficult case to exclaim: - This is a case for Juan Rosai! This simple expression synthesizes the legend that was created around him. Those who knew him personally were  undoubtedly amazed by his diagnostic insight, exceptional memory and organizational skills. However, his vast culture and passions were not limited to medicine, but ranged to music, literature and the world of sports, especially football. We worked with him in his last years of activity and want to share with the communities of pathologists our warm feelings about this …

On the orientational analysis of planar fibre systems from digital images

2002

The orientational characteristics of fibres in digital images are studied. The fibres are modelled by a planar Boolean model whose typical grain is a thick (coloured) fibre. The aim is to make stereological inference on the rose of directions of the unobservable central fibres from observations made on a digital image of the thick fibres. For central fibres, the relation between the rose of directions and the point intensity, observed on a sampling line, is known. We derive, under regularity conditions, the relation between the unobservable point intensity and the scaled variogram observed on the line in a binary and a greyscale image. Using such a relation, it is possible to draw inference…
