Postmortem Computed Tomography: From Acquisition to Reporting

2019

PMCT in a noninvasive, fast, and quite available method which coroners and forensic experts tend to use more and more often, especially when a crime is suspected. PMCT proved to be an excellent tool for detection and assessment of bone fracture injuries due to sharp trauma and bullet trajectories.

PROVA TECNICA E CONTRADDITTORIO NEL PROCESSO PENALE

2023

When science and the criminal process come into contact, cognitive mechanisms are set in motion aimed at reorganizing knowledge belonging to worlds other than the legal one. In this context, the actors of the trial scene are forced to move on a hybrid terrain in which judicial epistemology and scientific epistemology mix. Such a fascinating picture pushes the scholar of the criminal process to seek interpretations suitable for explaining the multiple dilemmas that the phenomenon entails. Starting from a historical-legislative excursus of the expert evidence, the proposed analysis examines the different channels through which expert knowledge enters the process, starting from the investigati…

FISH: Face Intensity-Shape Histogram representation for automatic face splicing detection

2019

Abstract Tampered images spread nowadays over any visual media influencing our judgement in many aspects of our life. This is particularly critical for face splicing manipulations, where recognizable identities are put out of context. To contrast these activities on a large scale, automatic detectors are required. In this paper, we present a novel method for automatic face splicing detection, based on computer vision, that exploits inconsistencies in the lighting environment estimated from different faces in the scene. Differently from previous approaches, we do not rely on an ideal mathematical model of the lighting environment. Instead, our solution, built upon the concept of histogram-ba…

Maxillofacial and dental-related injuries from a Brazilian forensic science institute : victims and perpetrators characteristics and associated risk …

2020

Background Trauma due to external causes represents one of the greatest challenges for public health services in different regions around the world. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of facial trauma, associated risk factors, and classification of body injuries in individuals who underwent forensic examination in a Brazilian center. Material and Methods Data were collected at the Ceará State Forensic Medicine unit in a 12-year period. Sociodemographic data related to the etiological agent and lesions resulting from the bodily injury were recorded. Results Among 1,031 physical injury exams, physical aggression (p<0.001), male victims aged between 21 and 30 years (p<0.001), salarie…

Child abuse in a medical setting: Case illustrations of two variants of munchausen sindrome by proxy

2017

Munchausen syndrome is a complex type of abuse, which is often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed in clinical practice, and has harmful consequences for children. Its relationship with child abuse, of which it is a variety, must be recognized in clinical and forensic practice. The authors report herein two observed cases of different types of Münchausen syndrome by proxy (MSbP). The first, is the most severe form of MSbP, with induced, true illness and related pathological symptoms into victim. The second case is a moderate form, much more complex to detect, in which a perpetrator parent simulates and aggravates the child‘s illness. Adequate training of health professionals and investigators…

In-situ NDT testing procedure as an integral part of failure analysis of historical masonry arch bridges

2015

Abstract A nineteenth-century masonry arch bridge was analyzed as an illustrative example to explain the role of in-situ test campaigns in failure analysis and retrofit design. Test results were studied to find out the advantages of each technique, with the aim of proposing an optimized in-situ testing procedure. Standard static penetrometer, flat jack, thermographic and georadar in-situ tests were conducted. Traffic effects were analyzed by means of vibrational tests. The experimental analysis performed to investigate damage on the bridge structures shows the degree of reliability offered by each technique in evaluating specific information and reproducing the global behavior of the struct…

Immunodetection of the microvillous cytoskeleton molecules villin and ezrin in the parasitophorous vacuole wall of Cryptosporidium parvum (Protozoa: …

1999

Microvilli - actin - villin - ezrin - Cryptosporidium parvum The sporozoites and merozoites of the Apicomplexan protozoan Cryptosporidium parvum (C. parvum) invade the apical side of enterocytes and induce the formation of a parasitophorous vacuole which stays in the brush border area and disturbs the distribution of microvilli. The vacuole is separated from the apical cytoplasm of the cell by an electron-dense layer of undetermined composition. In order to characterize the enterocyte cytoskeleton changes that occur during C. parvum invasion and development, we used both confocal immunofluorescence and immunoelectron microscopy to examine at the C.parvum-enterocyte interface the distributio…

Prenatal Ultrastructural Diagnosis in the Neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinoses

1994

Summary The neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinose (NCL) are autosomal-recessive disorders in childhood of unknown enzymatic origin. They can be recognized by the presence of abnormal lipopigments identified by electron microscopy. Based on the study of circulating lymphocytes, individual clinical subtypes of NCL can be correlated. Prenatal diagnosis of NCL with the electron microscope is now feasible for the infantile (Finnish) from (INCL) and late-infantile form (LINCL). INCL-specific granular lipopigments are present in endothelial cells of biopsied chorion stroma vessels of homozygously affected fetuses. In LINCL, disease-typical curvilinear bodies can be identified in uncultured amniotic fluid …
