Pleomorphic pineocytoma with extensive neuronal differentiation: report of two cases

Two pineal parenchymal tumors are presented, arising in a 54-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman; respectively. They showed isomorphic, cellular areas of small cells, often with characteristic pineocytomatous rosettes, and of medium-sized cells, as well as less cellular regions with highly pleomorphic, often ganglioid large cells. Immunohistochemistry disclosed extensive neuronal differentiation. There was intense positivity for neurofilament protein and microtubule-associated protein 2 in the pleomorphic areas and more variable expression in the isomorphic regions. Expression of pyruvate kinase M2 in preneoplastic hepatic foci of N-nitrosomorpholine-treated rats.

The expression of the pyruvate kinase (PK) isoenzymes L and M2 was analysed in the livers of rats treated with the hepatocarcinogenic agent N-nitrosomorpholine (NNM) in the drinking water. In control animals L-PK expression was restricted to liver parenchymal cells, whereas M2-PK was detected in bile duct epithelial, blood vessel wall, endothelial and Kupffer cells. In rats treated with NNM proliferating oval cells were consistently L-PK negative and M2-PK positive, while the ductal cells of cholangiofibroses were clearly L-PK positive and coexpressed M2-PK. The amygdala undergoes severe pathological changes during the course of Parkinson's disease (PD). Lewy bodies and Lewy neurites are distributed in a specific manner throughout the nuclear complex. The lesional pattern displays only minor interindividual variation. The most prominent changes occur in the accessory cortical and central nuclei. The cortical, accessory basal and granular nuclei show less severe alterations, while the basal and lateral nuclei, as well as the intercalated cell masses, generally remain uninvolved. Camptocormia is a highly disabling syndrome that occurs in various diseases but is particularly associated with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Although first described nearly 200 years ago, the morphological changes associated with camptocormia are still under debate and the pathophysiology is unknown. We analyzed paraspinal muscle biopsies of 14 PD patients with camptocormia and compared the findings to sex-matched postmortem controls of comparable age to exclude biopsy site-specific changes. Primary tumors of the heart in infants and children are rare. The types of heart tumors in pediatric age groups are generally different from those in adults. Cardiac myxoma is by far the most common tumor in adults, but in infants and adolescents the prevalent tumor of the heart is rhabdomyoma. Among benign cardiac tumors, cardiac hemangiomas are rare and often diagnosed post-mortem due to the lack of specific clinical symptoms and signs. Flow-cytometric DNA analysis of intracranial tumors in children.

The objective of this study was to investigate flow-cytometric DNA values of pediatric intracranial tumors, and to establish DNA analysis as a potential prognostic parameter. Twenty-nine brain tumor specimens from 26 pediatric patients were cryo-preserved within a 3-year period. The DNA content was measured by flow cytometry. Six of the tumor specimens had aneuploid DNA patterns. The median of the proliferation index was lower in the survivor group compared with the non-survivor group (36.4% and 47.5%, respectively). Ten of the 26 patients are still alive, eight were lost to follow up, and eight died. Flow-cytometric DNA analysis may be a helpful tool for examining brain tumors in children.…

We report a case of biphasic dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in which the high-grade component exhibited a previously undescribed plexiform pattern. Reelin is a glycoprotein that plays a critical role in the regulation of neuronal migration during brain development and, since reelin has a role in the control of cell migration, it might represents an important factor in cancer pathology. In this study, 66 surgical specimens of prostate cancer were analyzed for reelin expression by immunohistochemical method. The reelin expression was correlated with Gleason score and individual Gleason patterns. Reelin expression was found in 39% prostate cancers. The etiopathogenesis of sarcoidosis, a systemic granulomatous disease, still remains obscure. A multitude of organs have been described to be affected in systemic sarcoidosis. Skeletal muscles may also be affected, leading to myalgia and weakness. A workup of the specific immune response with emphasis on the macrophage response is provided herein.
