Seventy-year changes in tree species composition and tree ages in state-owned forests in Latvia

2011

Abstract During the last 100 years, forest management in Latvia has gradually become more and more focused on industrial logging, which can be expected to have affected the tree species composition and age distribution across the landscape. These changes need to be considered in forest management and conservation of biological diversity. The aim of the study was to use forest records to reconstruct the tree species composition and age distribution in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve in northern Latvia for the period, 1929–1941. These data were compared to a data-set from 2008, to determine the changes that transpired during a period of intensification of forest management. The silvicultu…

Systemic silviculture and Mediterranean forest complexity: the need for a new paradigm in forestry

2011

2018

Sicily currently has no forest areas with certification of sustainable forest management. This work analyzes the possibility of applying the criteria and indicators of PEFC certification of sustainable forest management in two study-cases: the municipal forest of Bivona (AG) and a forest area in the Madonie Mountains (PA). Both are representative of different and important Sicilian forest ecosystems. This analysis highlights the main weaknesses related to current forest management practices and the inadequate consultation with stakeholders.

Digitizing maps procedure for scientific forestry administration by GIS database. Case study: Rasinari forestry administration

2019

This study aims to detail the computerization and digitization process of forest management of Rasinari forest district, Sibiu county. The study focuses on the transition from the printed design of management plans, which includes forest management plans and forest maps, in digital format. The digital model of management plans was originally tested on a single management plan and then extended to all management plans and is now implemented in a GIS database that can be viewed online as well.

Long-term impacts of increased timber harvests on ecosystem services and biodiversity: A scenario study based on national forest inventory data

2020

Abstract The transition to a climate-neutral economy is expected to increase future timber demands and endanger the multifunctionality of forests. National scenario analyses are needed to determine long-term forest management impacts and support forest policy making in defining guidelines for the sustainable provision of forests’ ecosystem services and biodiversity (ESB). Using national forestry inventory data, the forest management model MASSIMO and a model to estimate harvesting costs, we simulated forest development in Switzerland under five politically relevant timber harvesting scenarios until 2106 (business as usual and four increased timber mobilisation scenarios). Model results were…

Changes in land use and physiological transitions of a Juniperus thurifera forest: from decline to recovery

2015

All Rights Reserved. Forest decline is frequently associated with infection; however, infections habitually affect trees that have been previously debilitated by environmental stress. Nevertheless, the causes and physiology of noninfectious forest decline are not well known. Some Juniperus thurifera L. forests presented severe (noninfectious) declines, with defoliations over 50%. The goal of this study was to determine the causes and characterize the physiology of this noninfectious decline, and we hypothesized that it could be related to environmental stress from increasing interspecific competition resulting from land abandonment. We randomly assigned60 trees to either a control group or …

Growing stock volume from multi-temporal landsat imagery through google earth engine

2019

Growing stock volume (GSV) is one of the most important variables for.forest management and is traditionally- estimated from ground measurements. These measurements are expensive and therefore sparse and hard to maintain in time on a regular basis. Remote sensing data combined with national forest inventories constitute a helpful tool to estimate and map forest attributes. However, most studies on GSV estimation from remote sensing data focus on small forest areas with a single or only a few species. The current study aims to map GSV in peninsular Spain, a rather large and very heterogeneous area. Around 50 000 wooded land plots from the Third Spanish National Forest Inventory (NFI3) were u…

A Multi-Criteria Decision Support System for Strategic Planning at the Swiss Forest Enterprise Level: Coping With Climate Change and Shifting Demands…

2021

Sustainable forest management plays a key role for forest biodiversity and the provisioning of ecosystem services (BES), including the important service of carbon sequestration for climate change mitigation. Forest managers, however, find themselves in the increasingly complex planning situation to balance the often conflicting demands in BES. To cope with this situation, a prototype of a decision support system (DSS) for strategic (long-term) planning at the forest enterprise level was developed in the present project. The DSS was applied at three case study enterprises (CSEs) in Northern Switzerland, two lowland and one higher-elevation enterprise, for a 50-year time horizon (2010 to 2060…

Interactive decision support and trade-off analysis for sustainable forest landscape planning under deep uncertainty

2022

Sustainable environmental management often involves long-term time horizons and multiple conflicting objectives and, by nature, is affected by different sources of uncertainty. Many sources of uncertainty, such as climate change or government policies, cannot be addressed using probabilistic models, and, therefore, they can be seen to contain deep uncertainty. In this setting, the variety of possible future states is represented as a set of scenarios lacking any information about the likelihood of occurring. Integrating deep uncertainty into multiobjective decision support increases complexity, calling for the elaboration of appropriate methods and tools. This paper proposes a novel intera…

Using GIS for management of conflicts in natural protected area in Cindrel mountains

2021

This study reflects the possibility of using the GIS technology for the management and resolution of conflicts between stakeholders in the management of protected natural areas that cover large surfaces, such as Natura 2000 sites. The research is accomplished in Frumoasa site from Cindrel Mountains, where a conflict of a legal nature was analysed, in the extinguishment of which the technology of geographical information systems was used. In this sense, the presence of the species and habitats that are found on the surface of the incriminated forest was analysed and the comparison with the list of species and habitats that was the basis for declaring the surface as a nature 2000 site. In the…
