Several global commitments have established a compromise to greatly increase the presence of trees in agricultural lands, fostering therefore the adoption of agroforestry systems and the destination of some areas for reforestation. Such tasks are challenging, particularly under the current climate change scenarios, and several studies have demonstrated a high risk of seedling mortality under harsh and extremely variable environmental conditions, calling for solutions that must increase the success and reduce the costs of growing a tree. [Pachygrapsus transversus (Gibbes, 1850) is reported for the first time from Italian waters. This crab was collected at Ustica Island and at several other localities on NW Sicily (southern Tyrrhenian Sea) on vermetid reefs, an intertidal habitat frequent in the sampling area. P. transversus, whose distributional range covers the warm and warm-temperate areas of the eastern and western Atlantic and the eastern Pacific, was already known from the eastern Mediterranean since the 1920s; prior to this paper it was recorded in the western Mediterranean only in 1980 and 1994 with very few specimens.There are no data to ascertain the origin of the Sicilian population, i.e., natural or ship-mediated…

In the wake of the historical tradition of landscape architecture, the architect Gianni Pirrone (Palermo, 1924-2004) understood the need to look at urban greenery as a figure and not as a background, or frame of buildings and neighbourhoods. Pirrone consigns to an imminent future - a time that escapes our eyes today - the need for a new relationship between ecological reserves, gardens, residual areas and the city. 8 pages; International audience; In a sandy agricultural soil of south-west of France, continuously cultivated with maize and amended with sewage-sludge over 20 years, the behavior of three trace metals (Cu, Pb, and Zn) was studied during the sludge applications (1974-1993) and after its cessation (1993-1998). Using the delta13C analysis, the dynamics of different sources of organic matter were followed in order to elucidate the influence of the sludge-derived organic matter on the fate of trace metals in the soil and its particle size fractions.
