Is it interspecific information use or aggression between putative competitors that steers the selection of nest-site characteristics? A reply to Sla…

2018

A growing number of studies have demonstrated that heterospecific individuals with overlapping resource needs – putative competitors – can provide information to each other that improves the outcomes of decisions. Our studies using cavity nesting resident tits (information provider) and migratory flycatchers (Ficedula spp., information user) have shown that selective interspecific information use (SIIU) can result in flycatchers copying and rejecting the apparent nest-site feature preferences of tits, depending on a perceivable fitness correlate (clutch size) of the tits. ese, and other results on the interspecific information use, challenge the predictions of traditional theory of species coexi…

Mathematics and Art Connections Expressed in Artworks by South African Students

2022

In this chapter, we examine a collection of drawings, and paintings from South African students between the ages of 10 to 17, that provide fresh and original perceptions to some already known topics, but also several unexpected connections between mathematics and art. These works reference classic math-art connections such as: golden ratio, spirals, infinity, and geometric figures; they also contain several personal reflections, unique discoveries and references to ethnomathematical connections within the African cultural heritage. To introduce their pieces and themselves, students shared their own interpretations of their artworks. These commentaries make possible the identification of cog…

Self-Directed Learning as a Practice of Workplace Learning: Interpretative Repertoires of Self-Directed Learning in ICT Work

2019

Changing technologies and competition in the field of information and communication technology (ICT) are challenging the learning of individual workers and teams alongside and through work. Organisations call for employees’ autonomy and self-directedness executed by agile operations and low hierarchies, where learning is also increasingly the responsibility of the individuals and teams themselves and occurs in practice without strong control of the organisation. Therefore, the multidimensional concept of self-directed learning becomes essential in the context of learning at work. In this study, we examine how employees in the ICT sector describe self-directed learning practices in the conte…

Critical Exploration of Flexible Delivery

2020

This work-in-progress research article presents an introductory qualitative study on students' perceptions of a flexibly delivered, modular computer science course. Many contemporary approaches to education rely in various ways on flexible delivery of course content. This is often done to capitalize on modern technology and the web, and to put the student ‘in the center.' However, it is becoming manifest that these approaches may challenge both the students and the equity between them, making it important to understand the effects of flexible delivery in terms of the students. In the voice of our students, flexible delivery was seen as a largely positive approach, reducing stress, promoting…

Searching for Global Employability : Can Students Capitalize on Enabling Learning Environments?

2019

Literature on global employability signifies “enabling” learning environments where students encounter ill-formed and open-ended problems and are required to adapt and be creative. Varying forms of “projects,” co-located and distributed, have populated computing curricula for decades and are generally deemed an answer to this call. We performed a qualitative study to describe how project course students are able to capitalize on the promise of enabling learning environments. This critical perspective was motivated by the circumstance of the present-day education systems being heavily regulated for the precipitated production of human capital. The students involved in our study described edu…

Designing and Implementing a CSCL-based Course on the Data Security of a Wireless Learning Environment

2012

This article reports on a design-based research (DBR) process for designing and implementing a computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) course on the data security of wireless learning environments. The study focuses on examining how university students practice data security when learning on a wireless campus, how data security aspects appear in this study and how students perceive the role of data security in CSCL. The research subjects included six pilot students and eight students enrolled in the course. To promote the reliability of the findings, various kinds of data were used. The data was analysed following the grounded theory approach. The results suggest that data security…

Informaali formatiivinen arviointi fysiikan oppituntien eri vaiheissa

2016

Tutkimuksessa esitettiin kolme tutkimuskysymystä: 1) Kuinka OTF-keskustelujen määrä vaihtelee oppitunnin eri vaiheissa, 2) muuttuuko OTF-arviointi laadullisest…

Organizational Learning from Cybersecurity Performance: Effects on Cybersecurity Investment Decisions

2023

AbstractIS literature has identified various economic, performance, and environmental factors affecting cybersecurity investment decisions. However, economic modeling approaches dominate, and research on cybersecurity performance as an antecedent to investments has taken a backseat. Neglecting the role of performance indicators ignores real-world concerns driving actual cybersecurity investment decision-making. We investigate two critical aspects of cybersecurity performance: breach costs and breach identification source, as antecedents to cybersecurity investment decisions. We use organizational learning to theorize how performance feedback from these two aspects of cybersecurity breaches …

Radiation Response of Ce-Codoped Germanosilicate and Phosphosilicate Optical Fibers

2016

We report an experimental investigation on the effects of Ce-codoping in determining the radiation response of germanosilicate and phosphosilicate Optical Fibers (OFs) in the UV-Visible domain and up to doses of $1~\hbox{MGy}({\rm SiO}_{2})$ . We show that the addition of Ce strongly impacts the Radiation Induced Attenuation (RIA) of both types of fibers. In the first case the radiation induced losses increase, whereas in the second one decrease. By combining the online RIA measurements with the Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) ones, we are able to infer the basic microscopic mechanisms taking place under irradiation, which involve the cerium codopant and some of the known Ge-related o…

Temporal spying and concealing process in fibre-optic data transmission systems through polarization bypass

2014

Recent research has been focused on the ability to manipulate a light beam in such a way to hide, namely to cloak, an event over a finite time or localization in space. The main idea is to create a hole or a gap in the spatial or time domain so as to allow for an object or data to be kept hidden for a while and then to be restored. By enlarging the field of applications of this concept to telecommunications, researchers have recently reported the possibility to hide transmitted data in an optical fibre. Here we report the first experimental demonstration of perpetual temporal spying and blinding process of optical data in fibre-optic transmission line based on polarization bypass. We succes…
