ASR performance prediction on unseen broadcast programs using convolutional neural networks

2018

In this paper, we address a relatively new task: prediction of ASR performance on unseen broadcast programs. We first propose an heterogenous French corpus dedicated to this task. Two prediction approaches are compared: a state-of-the-art performance prediction based on regression (engineered features) and a new strategy based on convolutional neural networks (learnt features). We particularly focus on the combination of both textual (ASR transcription) and signal inputs. While the joint use of textual and signal features did not work for the regression baseline, the combination of inputs for CNNs leads to the best WER prediction performance. We also show that our CNN prediction remarkably …

Visual Re-Ranking for Multi-Aspect Information Retrieval

2017

We present visual re-ranking, an interactive visualization technique for multi-aspect information retrieval. In multi-aspect search, the information need of the user consists of more than one aspect or query simultaneously. While visualization and interactive search user interface techniques for improving user interpretation of search results have been proposed, the current research lacks understanding on how useful these are for the user: whether they lead to quantifiable benefits in perceiving the result space and allow faster, and more precise retrieval. Our technique visualizes relevance and document density on a two-dimensional map with respect to the query phrases. Pointing to a locat…

Perception of a blending odor mixture: an fMRI study in humans

2012

Supported by grants from the Burgundy Regional council and EU-ERDF, European Dijon-Dresden Laboratory (LEA 549); Odors we perceive from our environment arise from the processing of mixtures of odorants. Some mixtures can lead to configural or elemental perception depending, in part, on experience. However, the neural bases of such influences are still unknown. In the present study, we examined the neurophysiological correlates of the configural and elemental processing of a binary odor mixture (AB). This AB mixture has previously been shown to blend into one percept, but also to produce a more or less configural perception depending on pre-exposure to either the mixture itself or to the sin…

Capabilities and Affordances in the ICT4D Context

2019

Part 1: Pushing the Boundaries - New Research Methods, Theory and Philosophy in ICT4D; International audience; The paper examines two concepts that have been frequently used in Information and Communications Technologies for Development (ICT4D) research, capabilities and affordance. We seek to delineate their similarities, their differences, and their accurate application in ICT4D. Both concepts connote a space of opportunities, both are relational between artefact and human agency when applied in ICT4D, and both entail potential rather than actualisation of possibilities. By comparing the two at some length, we hope to generate a more refined understanding of both capabilities and affordan…

Changes in the expression of cation-Cl- cotransporters, NKCC1 and KCC2, during cortical malformation induced by neonatal freeze-lesion.

2007

Focal cortical malformations comprise a heterogeneous group of disturbances in brain development, often associated with intractable epilepsy. A focal freeze-lesion of cerebral cortex in newborn rat produces a cortical malformation that resembles human polymicrogyria, clinical conditions that results from abnormal neuronal migration. The change in GABAergic functions that occurs during early brain development is induced by an alteration in Cl(-) homeostasis and plays important roles in neocortical development by modulating such events as laminar organization and synaptogenesis. We therefore investigated the relationship between pathogenesis of polymicrogyria and ontogeny of Cl(-) homeostasis…

The Results of Changing the Current Solution Concept of Universal Motor Gear Reducers with Helical Gears

2021

By analysing and comparing the existing solutions of universal gear reducers with helical gears of the leading manufacturers, it can be noticed the effort to increase the load capacity of the gear reducer within the same axis height. In this way, the manufacturers can offer smaller (cheaper) gear reducers, as well as to simultaneously increase the values of the largest gear ratios. This concept enables the offer of lower-stage (cheaper) gear reducers with higher gear ratios in certain segments of gear ratios. By these efforts, it is reached the maximum, but the further increase is possible only by changing the current concept of universal gear drives. Within this paper, it is given an overv…

Politics of memory and oblivion. An introduction to the special issue

2019

This editorial sets the context for the special issue on memory and oblivion and introduces the contributions. By interpreting the contemporary uses of the past, the editorial underscores the relevance of the study of memory and oblivion in today’s heated and antagonistic debates. The politics of memory and uses of the past often coincide with efforts of reducing the past to legitimize the current authorities and tend to create new gaps in memory that contribute to the polarisation of societies. The special issue consists of six articles that scrutinise the consequences of the intertwining of memory, oblivion and political power in European countries. Based on two main approaches, the contr…
