Explanatory frameworks for interaction design
2005
Explanatory design means the practice by which design solutions are evidence-based. This practice has been the norm in engineering design, relying as it does on the laws of science, but much less attention has been paid to the necessity of abandoning intuitive practices in designing for the human element within technological systems. One reason for this may have been the variety of explanatory bases within psychology. There is no single psychological framework for explaining human behaviour; instead different types of problems must be solved by using very different types of explanatory frameworks and theory language. Cognitive capacity, emotions and mental contents may serve as examples of …
Differences in familiarity according to the cognitive reserve of healthy elderly people / Diferencias en familiaridad en función de la reserva cognit…
2014
AbstractThis study examines the relationship between cognitive reserve and familiarity processes in recognition memory. We hypothesize that people with high cognitive reserve are able to better compensate in alternative information retrieval processes. Forty-five participants, divided into high and low cognitive reserve groups, conducted a recognition experiment where they were asked to discriminate between studied and non-studied words that varied in perceptual familiarity. The results indicated that participants were able to use perceptual familiarity to improve their level of recognition. More importantly, people with high cognitive reserve used familiarity better than those with low cog…
Cognition in HCI : An Ongoing Story
2009
The field of human computer interaction (HCI) is deeply rooted in cognitive science. But can cognitive science still contribute to the newest developments? This article introduces the recent trends towards “embodied cognition.” Then research on image schemas and their metaphorical extensions is reviewed as an example of how understanding a special branch of embodied cognition can be useful to HCI. Special emphasis is placed on the validity of the theory and its practicability in different phases of the user interface design cycle. It is concluded that cognition can still contribute to current HCI and that the dialogue between the different schools of thought is beneficial to the field.
Some Results Using Different Approaches to Merge Visual and Text-Based Features in CLEF’08 Photo Collection
2009
This paper describes the participation of the MIRACLE team at the ImageCLEF Photographic Retrieval task of CLEF 2008. We succeeded in submitting 41 runs. Obtained results from text-based retrieval are better than content-based as previous experiments in the MIRACLE team campaigns [5, 6] using different software. Our main aim was to experiment with several merging approaches to fuse text-based retrieval and content-based retrieval results, and it happened that we improve the text-based baseline when applying one of the three merging algorithms, although visual results are lower than textual ones.
Regional Susceptibility in VCD Spectra to Dynamic Molecular Motions
2018
Experimental and theoretical studies of the vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectrum of 3-methyl-1-(methyldiphenlsilyl)-1-phenylbutan-1-ol, whose absolute configuration is key to elucidating the Brook rearrangement of tertiary benzylic α-hydroxylsilanes, are presented. It is found that the entire OH-bending region in this spectrum—a region that provides important marker bands—cannot be reproduced at all by standard theoretical approaches even though other regions are well described. Using a novel approach to disentangle contributions to the rotational strength of these bands, internal coordinates are identified that critically influence the appearance of this part of the spectrum. We s…
BUCC Shared Task: Cross-Language Document Similarity
2015
We summarise the organisation and results of the first shared task aimed at detecting the most similar texts in a large multilingual collection. The dataset of the shared was based on Wikipedia dumps with interlanguage links with further filtering to ensure comparability of the paired articles. The eleven system runs we received have been evaluated using the TREC evaluation metrics. 1 Task description Parallel corpora of original texts with their translations provide the basis for multilingual NLP applications since the beginning of the 1990s. Relative scarcity of such resources led to greater attention to comparable (=less parallel) resources to mine information about possible translations…
Arterio-venous malformations in childhood: Clinical presentation, results after operative treatment and long-term follow-up
1989
In a series of 182 arterio-venous malformations (AVM) recently published [8] we found 33 children aged 1 to 16 years. In 28 cases, the admitting condition was hemorrhage. For 31 AVMs total excision was possible. We observed one postoperative death accounting for a mortality of 3%. All children but two were followed-up by personal examination. Two were not able to work due to severe neurological deficits and seven had not been able to get into their intended occupation.
Image guidance to improve reliability and data integrity of transcranial Doppler sonography.
2012
Abstract Background Principles and accuracy of image-guided transcranial Doppler (IG TCD) sonography have been published recently. However, it remains open whether combination of image guidance and TCD offers an additional clinical advantage. This study scores the accuracy of conventional TCD examinations and investigates the potential improvement of TCD data integrity and reliability regarding the additional use of IG. Methods Conventional TCD was performed by a group of experienced investigators, who were blinded to images of a navigation system tracking the Doppler probe, whereas an independent observer documented the TCD findings, acquired by the investigators, due to saving spatial dat…
State of the Art and Future Direction in Diagnosis, Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Treatment of Brain Arteriovenous Malformations
2022
Brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) are uncommon and represent a heterogeneous group of lesions. Although these 2 facts have delayed research on this topic, knowledge about the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of bAVMs has evolved in recent years. We conducted a review of the literature to update the knowledge about diagnosis, molecular biology, genetic, pathology, and treatment by searching for the following terms: "Epidemiology AND Natural History," "risk of hemorrhage," "intracranial hemorrhage," "diagnosis," "angiogenesis," "molecular genetics," "VEGF," "KRAS," "radiosurgery," "endovascular," "microsurgery," or "surgical resection." Our understanding of bAVMs has signific…
