Biological control of Listeria monocytogenes in soil model systems by Enterococcus mundtii strains expressing mundticin KS production
2022
Abstract The agricultural practices applied in pre-harvest greatly influence the presence and the levels of microorganisms in fresh produce. Among these, Listeria monocytogenes represents one of the most lethal foodborne pathogens associated with vegetables. The main hypothesis of this work is that bacteriocin producer Enterococcus mundtii strains can be effective against L. monocytogenes in soil. To this purpose, bacteriocin production by E. mundtii WFE3, WFE20 and WFE31, three strains showing a strong bacteriocin activity in terms of inhibitory power and inhibition spectra, was evaluated in sterile extracts from agricultural soil and peat moss, in organic nutrient solution (ONS) and miner…

Deep drawing versus incremental forming processes: A comparative cradle to gate analysis
2012
The evaluation and reduction of the environmental impact of manufacturing processes have become a crucial issue in the last few years, addressing the interest of industrial and academic research towards greener solutions and technologies. Reducing input materials and energy requirements has become an imperative action in the industrial practice. As a matter of fact, strong is the concern on lightweight solutions and technologies for sheet stamping operations especially in the automotive sector. However, the knowledge on how impactful such processes are is still poor. In this paper, a comparison between a traditional deep drawing and an single point incremental forming process is investigate…
TGF-beta regulates airway responses via T cells.
2003
Abstract Allergic asthma is characterized by airway hyperreactivity, inflammation, and a Th2-type cytokine profile favoring IgE production. Beneficial effects of TGF-β and conflicting results regarding the role of Th1 cytokines have been reported from murine asthma models. In this study, we examined the T cell as a target cell of TGF-β-mediated immune regulation in a mouse model of asthma. We demonstrate that impairment of TGF-β signaling in T cells of transgenic mice expressing a dominant-negative TGF-β type II receptor leads to a decrease in airway reactivity in a non-Ag-dependent model. Increased serum levels of IFN-γ can be detected in these animals. In contrast, after injection of OVA …
Phobalysin, a Small β-Pore-Forming Toxin of Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae
2015
ABSTRACT Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae , an important pathogen of marine animals, may also cause septicemia or hyperaggressive necrotizing fasciitis in humans. We previously showed that hemolysin genes are critical for virulence of this organism in mice and fish. In the present study, we characterized the hlyA gene product, a putative small β-pore-forming toxin, and termed it phobalysin P (PhlyP), for “photobacterial lysin encoded on a plasmid.” PhlyP formed stable oligomers and small membrane pores, causing efflux of K + , with no significant leakage of lactate dehydrogenase but entry of vital dyes. The latter feature distinguished PhlyP from the related Vibrio cholerae cytolysin…
Expression of Active Streptolysin O in Escherichia coli as a Maltose-Binding-Protein-Streptolysin-O Fusion Protein. The N-Terminal 70 Amino Acids are…
1996
Streptolysin 0 (SLO) is the prototype of a family of cytolysins that consists of proteins which bind to cholesterol and form very large transmembrane pores. Structure/function studies on the pore-forming cytolysin SLO have been complicated by the proteolytic inactivation of a substantial portion of recombinant SLO (rSLO) expressed in Escherichia coli. To overcome this problem, translational fusions between the E. coli maltose-binding protein (MBP) gene and SLO were constructed, using the vectors pMAL-p2 and pMAL-c2. MBP-SLO fusion proteins were degraded if secreted into the E. coli periplasm, but intact, soluble MBP-SLO fusion proteins were produced at high levels in the cytoplasm. Active S…
Crítica musical y pensamiento estético en la España de la Restauración: José María Esperanza y Sola (1834-1905)
2015
One of the most outstanding figures of music criticism in the Spanish Restoration was José María Esperanza y Sola (1834-1905), active for thirty years, from the late 1860s until the end of the century. During this period, Esperanza collaborated in different periodical publications and, particularly, “La Ilustración Española y Americana”, from whose pages he informed about the most important musical events celebrated in Madrid, judged according to a conservative aesthetic criterion, opposed to any novelty that infringe the traditional music system. On the basis of Esperanza´s thought, our study analyzes the different subjects that constitute his journalistic production.La crítica musical en …

in 2012–2013 the Whitney Museum of American Art will feature a retrospective exhibition of Jay De Feo's works. In view of this, it should be noted that two of her lesser-known monumental paintings ...
What Are the Rules of the Game? Some Remarks on The Yellow Jacket
1995
The vast caravan out of Ceylon … arrived safely in Europe in April 1884 … There were sixty-seven people, twenty-five elephants … and a great many oxen of various kinds. The ethnographic exhibition included hundreds of different shows, and even the vegetative world was represented in numerous exhibits … My Singhalese troupe was veiled in the ancient wondrous world of India; not only had we captured the vibrant, picturesque, outward appearance of India, but also the shimmer of its mystique. The colourful, captivating sight of the caravanserai, the majestic elephants, partly bedecked in golden saddlery, partly in work harnesses, pulling gigantic loads; the slim, attractive, doe-eyed dancers wi…

2016
In 2015, the Bridges World Conference, the most significant annual international gathering to be held for exploring connections between mathematics and the arts, met in Baltimore, USA. The conference program included lectures by recognized scholars and artists, the world largest exhibition of mathematical art, thematic theatre performances, a poetry afternoon demonstrating how mathematics can interrelate with literature, and a short film festival as well as workshops organized by researchers, educators and artists. nonPeerReviewed
