Abel Neves Inter-Rail as a Political Play
2017
Music festivals as mediators and their influence on consumer awareness
2020
Abstract Cultural products compete for public awareness in markets with high uncertainty, oversupply and a short product life cycle. Altogether, this means that only a small fraction of all releases generate the necessary consumer awareness to achieve a significant commercial success. This paper aims at identifying the informational function music festivals serve in cultural markets and how it translates into consumer discovery of cultural supply. To do so, we empirically measure informational spillover effects to performers at an established music festival. We hypothesize that this effect stems from the reputation attached to the brand equity of cultural organizations, is asymmetric, as it…
2021
This paper analyzes the expressivity of popular language from the novels ”Iancu Jianu, Head of Administration” and ”Iancu Jianu, Captain of the Hajduks” by N.D. Popescu. The popular language is a language specific aspect, a language version and a main component of the oral version of the national language. In literary works, the popular language has a stylistic purpose. The aesthetic value of the text is the result of the process by which the expressiveness of the writer`s language is converted into an individual literary rule. The stylistic processes and brands encountered in popular language are national specific and they reflect the history, the way of thinking and the feelings of Romani…
2013
ABSTRACT: A reflection on the meaning of the terms «iconography» and «iconology», as defined by the fields of Art History and Archeology, in a strict sense, as disciplines concerned with the description and interpretation of images, respectively. In the everyday use of these terms we can also observe an inappropriate meaning when the object itself to which one of these disciplines is applied is designated as «iconography». Likewise, the term «iconology», in its migration from Art History to areas such as Theology, has come to acquire —in one concrete case analyzed here— a completely inappropriate meaning due to the loss of the correct epistemological orientation. KEY WORDS: Iconography, Ico…
2016
ABSTRACT: Beugelen was a game, described early on by Erasmus, which gained wide popularity in the Netherlands, played both in palaces and villages, as evidenced by numerous engravings of the 16th and 17th Centuries. Therefore, it is not surprising to find its allegorical-symbolic exploitation, associated with concepts such as mental laziness (Heinrich Aldegrever), the fatal consequences of the game (Johannes David) and the effects of human and divine love (Peter Rollos, Typus mundi , Ludovicus van Leuven and Willem den Elger). In the light of previous emblematic repertories, I delve into the meaning of a number of paintings, paying special attencion to works of Lucas Gassel ( David and Bath…
Laurentius Lotus [Lorenzo Lotto]. De Amore
2014
ABSTRACT: In the study presented here of some portraits by Lorenzo Lotto, I have attempted to establish a reading of the image, of the details that the artist offers us in his canvas which, to my way of thinking, orient us towards the semantic meaning of the painting. In this concrete case I deal with the theme of love. This entails, therefore, an in-depth exploration of the story that the artist wishes to consider through his work, with the aim of recording and classifying the image by analyzing both its graphic as well as literary precedents. KEY WORDS: Lorenzo Lotto, Portrait, Love, Allegory, Iconography.
2016
ABSRACT: In this study I relate the building of the Basilica of Estrela (Lisbon) to the painting by Pompeo Battoni and the poem by Faustino Arevalo, both dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, whose worship, suffering a similar fate to that of the suppressed Society of Jesus (1773), went beyond the ecclesiastical sphere and became a source of controversy in the secular milieu of the period. KEYWORDS: P. Battoni, F. Arevalo, Sacred Heart of Jesus, Jesuits.
L´on faict sçavoir que l´on vendra.
2018
ABSTRACT: In 1670, in Brussels, a printed advertisement announced the auction of a valuable set of a hundred paintings, property of the late Fernando Alejandro de Portugal. A printed broadside announced the sale, and included the names of the artists and titles of the works, as well as their formats and the material form of the pieces, in some cases. Therefore, the advertisement is also an auction catalogue, one of the first to be printed in early modern Europe. This article seeks to tell the story of the print history of the humble broadside as advertisement and catalogue, as well as its content and information on the owners of this extraordinary collection of paintings.

Bocángel?s Silva «El Retrato» : A Textual Trojan Horse?
2020
ABSTRACT: Gabriel Bocángel’s silva «El retrato» (c. 1638) is a textual Trojan horse in the war for poetic patronage in the early modern Spanish court. Written on the wedding of the poet’s cousin to Juan de Cetina, secretary to the Admiral of Castile, the poem is a verbal portrait of the bride that undermines not only the tradition of the descriptio puellae, but also the Count-Duke of Olivares’s power. As a panegyric of the latter’s enemy, the text employs the botanical images of the laurel and the ivy, exploiting the full sense of their symbolic meaning. As an appeal for the patronage of poetry and letters at court and an exercise in «self-fashioning» (Greenblatt), the text makes the lovers…
2014
ABSTRACT: This article seeks to compare emblematics with El dia de fiesta (1654/1660) by Juan de Zabaleta, a collection of portraits of manners and characters marked by an encyclopaedic feature that serves the pronounced degree of religious and moral didacticism of the text. It first recapitulates the epistemological basis that Zabaleta has in common with emblematics, namely analogical thinking (Foucault) and the belief in the ‘readability of the world’ (Blumenberg). Subsequently it analyses the allegorical function of certain animals –the panther and the octopus, the ape and the turtle– which Zabaleta refers to as examples of virtues and vices, especially hypocrisy, comparing it to the mea…
