Individual Decisions and Perceived Form in Collective Free Improvisation
2015
International audience; This paper proposes a first attempt to study quantitatively Collective Free Improvisation (CFI). We report an experiment designed to study the relationship between the improvisers’ individual high-level decisions and the improvisation’s form perceived by external auditors. We recorded 16 trios in which the improvisers used a MIDI-pedal to indicate in real-time a significant change in their own musical production. Expert listeners were later asked to segment each improvisation so that we obtained their perception of the structure. By analysing the correlations between musicians’ individual decisions and listeners’ segmentation points, we discuss how the improvisation’…
Introduction: The Architectures of Shakespeare
2017
This introduction sketches a framework for what I would term “the architectures of Shakespeare”, taking into account Shakespeare’s use of architectural terms in order to situate the poet-dramatist’...
How students learn to teach? A case study of instrumental lessons given by Latvian undergraduate performer students without prior teacher training
2012
The purpose of this study was to describe and discuss the way students of the Latvian Academy of Music teach before having entered a teacher training programme. Five hours of students’ teaching work was video-taped, analysed and discussed with them between the spring of 2010 and the winter of 2011. The descriptive and analytic results of this study were also contrasted with their own views on pedagogy, which were drawn from a previous study that had been conducted with the same students and their peers in the fall of 2009. The role of the teaching habits and skills that students have acquired from their own teaching, temperament or background is discussed, as well as their needs starting te…
Numerical-Experimental Study Regarding the Single Point Incremental Forming Process
2021
The present paper proposes a numerical-experimental comparative study on the single point incremental forming process. A DC04 steel sheet with a thickness of 0.6 mm was used for both the numerical simulation using the finite element method and the experimental research. The type of trajectory used was a spiral trajectory and the finished part obtained was a truncated cone-shaped part. The analysis program used for simulation was Ls-Dyna. The simulations were performed in several variants: with a fixed mesh and with an adaptive mesh, using two different element formulations: 25 (Belytschko-Tsay formulation with thickness stretch) and -16 (fully integrated shell element modified for higher ac…
Anamorphic Projection: Analogical/Digital Algorithms
2014
The study presents the first outcomes of a wider research dealing with the theme of “anamorphosis”, a specific technique of geometric projection of a shape on a surface. Anamorphosis represents the synthesis among geometry, art and architecture and is realized in scientific and empirical research approaches. In this study we investigated how new digital techniques allow to simplify the anamorphic applications even in case of projections on complex surfaces. After a short excursus of the most famous historical and contemporary applications, we propose some possible approaches that allow you to manage the geometry of anamorphic curves both in Descriptive Geometry field (by using interactive t…
Isolated osteoblastoma of the cuboid bone: A case report and review of the literature
2020
Osteoblastoma is a relatively rare, benign, bone-forming tumor, commonly observed in the second and third decades of life. Spine and the long tubular bones are the most common sites of involvement. Osteoblastoma is infrequently seen in other sites, including the bones of hand and foot. A rare case of a 35-year-old man that presented an osteoblastoma of the cuboid bone is reported. The patient was treated with surgical resection and grafting. After the intervention, the patient recovered with no clinical and radiological evidence of recurrence after one year of follow-up. Several cases of osteoblastoma-like variant of osteosarcoma of the cuboid have been previously reported, but, to our know…
I — Theatricality Introduction: Theatricality: A Key Concept in Theatre and Cultural Studies
1995
At the Theatre Historiography Symposium, held during the 1993 Helsinki IFTR/FIRT Conference, a specific term came into circulation which infiltrated and permeated the discussion to such an extent that it appeared to adopt the position and function of a key term in theatre historiography: ‘theatricality’. This was no great surprise, however. For the symposium set out to consider two basic issues: first, to examine the application of analytic strategies from other disciplines to theatre history and, secondly, to identify the distinctive features of theatre history as a single discipline. Both concerns are closely related to the concept of theatricality.
THE PAINTED CEILING OF THE NAVE OF THE CAPPELLA PALATINA IN PALERMO: AN ESSAY ON ITS GEOMETRIC AND CONSTRUCTIVE FEATURES
2010
Chronic myeloid leukemia-derived exosomes promote tumor growth through an autocrine mechanism.
2014
Background Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a clonal hematopoietic stem cell disorder in which leukemic cells display a reciprocal t(9:22) chromosomal translocation that results in the formation of the chimeric BCR-ABL oncoprotein, with a constitutive tyrosine kinase activity. Consequently, BCR-ABL causes increased proliferation, inhibition of apoptosis, and altered adhesion of leukemic blasts to the bone marrow (BM) microenvironment. It has been well documented that cancer cells can generate their own signals in order to sustain their growth and survival, and recent studies have revealed the role of cancer-derived exosomes in activating signal transduction pathways involved in cancer cell…
Reshaping End-of-Life components by sheet hydroforming: An experimental and numerical analysis
2022
In this study, a numerical/experimental analysis is proposed to investigate the possibility of reshaping sheet metal-based End-of-Life (EoL) components using sheet Hydroforming (SHF). Returned EoL components are challenging to be reformed, they are usually characterised by high heterogeneity as there are localised thinning areas (caused by the original forming processes), and the overall formability is reduced with respect to the original flat sheet material. The reshaping route was replicated: a deep drawing process was adopted to impart a square feature; subsequently, SHF was performed. The capability of remove the deep drawn feature was analysed with varying Blank-holder force, oil press…
