La Biblia como lugar común

2020

2019

ABSTRACT:In 1668, the emblem bookHet voorhof der ziele[The Antechamber of the Soul] was published in Rotterdam by the bookseller and humanist François van Hoogstraten. Its main argument conveys the concept of vanitas, since its point of departure is found in the Tratado de La Vanidad del mundo(Treatise of the Vanity of the World) by the Spanish preacher, friar Diego de Estella (1574). This work, rather than slavishly following the sources and content of the Spanish treatise, includes a series of variants that allow for the corroboration that it is neither plagiarism nor a translation of the Spanish original. These variant include the incorporation of works subsequent to the publication of E…

2018

ABSTRACT: Juan de Borja (1533-1606), the son of Saint Francisco de Borja (1510-1572), who would later become the third Superior General of the Socity of Jesus, published a book of emblems with a pronounced moralistic content, with the title Empresas Morales (Prague, 1581), after a long and distinguished diplomatic career. It is a work that stands out, among other reasons, for the evidence that can be detected in it of the method of study implanted in the Ratio Studiorum by the Society. It was the system of study under which the author was educated. The purpose of our article is to show, through an analysis of the book's imprese, which at first glance exude a predominantly political nature, …

2018

ABSTRACT: This article examines the emblems dedicated to Salvador (Bahia) and Olinda (Pernambuco) by Daniel Meisner and Eberhard Kieser in their singular book of urban emblems Thesaurus Philo-Politicus. Das ist: Politisches Schatzkästlein, first published in Frankfort on the Main between 1623 and 1631. Those Brazilian cities, together with Cuzco in Peru, were the only ones in America among the 830 plates included in the work. I describe the respective inserted emblematic picturae, with transcriptions and translations of the German and Latin inscriptiones, subscriptiones and explicit, and I attempt to interpret them and identify the sources of the views.

2018

ABSTRACT: The drawings that Lorenzo Lotto made for the marquetry of the choir of Santa Maria Maggiore of Bergamo, executed between 1524 and 1532, highlight the special interest in hieroglyphs in Italian art. This article concentrates on the four examples of inlaid work that decorate the exterior facade of the choir, which were crafted based on the drawings of Lotto. The marquetry is analyzed by identifying its textual and visual sources, proposing as well an iconographical interpretation by considering the visual discourse that derives from the work as a whole.

2020

ABSTRACT: This paper addresses the issue of the crisis or vanishing of authority in contemporary culture in the particular form of the problem of legitimacy in the use of language. What grounds can speakers find in order to justify their claim to be listened to? I point out that, since this problem has been examined for quite some time in the area of Biblical studies, we could improve our understanding of the current situation by means of an interdisciplinary dialogue. From this perspective, I consider claims to authority under three headings: prophecy, or the individual authority of the speaker; interpretation, or authority derived from a written source; fiction, or renouncing authority; a…

Some Visual Strategies in Symbolic Illustrated Advertising

2018

ABSTRACT: Some symbolic illustrated advertising may remind one of emblems. It is certainly visual culture, but it is also an aspect of emblematics in the material culture. I write from a European perspective, drawing largely on European and American publications. The AIDA formula well sums up the purposes of commercial advertising, and is said to consist of attracting Attention, arousing Interest, creating Desire, and motivating Action. In commercial advertising the desired action is the sale of a product or service. This calls for strategies of persuasion, which can be described rhetorically or thematically. I prefer the thematic approach, and have decided that least following strategies w…

2020

ABSTRACT: The Chapel of the Virgin of Guadalupe, located in the Monastery of the Royal Discalced Nuns of Madrid, features a complex iconographical program, with the Virgin and the strong women of the Old Testament as its protagonists. This program was executed by the artist Sebastián Herrera Barnuevo, and designed by one of its resident nuns, Sister Ana Dorotea de Austria. This article attempt to shed light an a rather uncommon feminine typology: that of the daughters of Job, Jemima and Keren-happuch by means of the study of the principal literary sources where they are mentioned. By this means I will offer a complete reading of the Chapel’s iconographical program, by establishing the relat…

This study analyses the reasons why such a cult took root in Seville, converting the city into an authentic Jacobean capital. Likewise, it delves into an analysis of the artistic works that emerged there as a consequence of the worship of Saint James, with special attention devoted to the different motivations of it promoters for undertaking those works of art.

2016

ABSTRACT: The first Marquis of Palmerola, Francesc Xavier Despujol, remodelled his family residence in 1784, which included a large hall decorated with a pictorial program painted by Pere Pau Montana. These historical paintings depicted episodes of war and peace, related to the family history of the owners, in order to show the importance and roots of their lineage, highlighting their illustrious role in their country’s history and commerce. This constitutes an outright justification of their power, an ostentatious display of their social status and their loyalty to the crown, following the trend amongst the nobility for building these cases grans during the last third of the eighteenth cen…
