ABSTRACT: «Sacred Emblematics on Baroque Sepulchres» is a study of urns and reliquaries for Catalan saints. The symbolic language is applied to the funeral container of sacred content, in the specific cases of St. Olegario, St. Armengol, St. Bernard Calbo and St. Mary of Cervello. With them we can refer to three different ways of presenting the sacred iconography in relation to local saints with incorrupt bodies: by means of emblematic literature, hagiography or decorative or heraldic motifs. RESUM: No ha estat fins fa poc temps que s’ha posat el focus d’atenció en la gran riquesa de l’obra lul·liana pel que fa al llenguatge visual, un element que va tenir un ampli desenvolupament al llarg del lul·lisme del Renaixement i del Barroc, però també en l’art contemporani. D’entrada, en les figures lul·lianes es troben elements que requereixen una reflexió: l’ús de formes i de lletres, i, en definitiva, la construcció d’una diagramàtica sobre la qual encara avui cal aplicar una catalogació i una interpretació més enllà de desentrellar-ne l’aplicabilitat o funcionalitat en relació amb cada text, aspectes que l’investigador A. Bonner ha estudiat a bastament, junt amb A. Soler.

ABSTRACT: This article introduces the emblem book Cor Iesv amanti sacrvm by Antonius Wierix, written around 1586/87 with 18 engravings accompanied by brief Latin poems of two stanzas with three lines each. After a general introduction to the work, this study presents an iconographic analysis of the picturae , interpreted together with their corresponding subscriptiones . This text and image composition is then regarded as religious language, typical of Jesuit emblem books. ABSTRACT: Throughout his life, Joseph Brodsky clung stubbornly to a set of habits and tastes. One of his most outstanding and surprising loyalties was his writing a Christmas poem every year, which in time produced around thirty different pieces. Among these is the remarkable «Dec 24, 1971», his last Christmas poem before he left the Soviet Union, which contains a reference to his idea of «empire» –a criticism of totalitarian regimes– plus an idea of Christianity as a religion of hospitality and brotherhood.

ABSTRACT: The engraving in the cover of La pícara Justina has been traditionally interpreted as a synthesis of the picaresque genre. This article explores the aforementioned engraving, commonly known as La nave de la vida picaresca, not as a reflection of the picaresque literary conventions, but through the perspective of the parody, which is an essential element of López de Úbeda’s work. The engraving would be dialoguing, comically, with the board game of the Filosofía cortesana moralizada (1587) by Alonso de Barros. ABSTRACT: In 1535 Emperor Charles V made a triumphant journey to the north of Sicily after the victory of Tunisia. The triumphal entries made in the Sicilian cities featured ceremonial elements which would later be imitated by the other Italian cities that received the Emperor. The Roman-style triumph and the chivalric romances are the main models used in the ephemeral decorations, which would have important consequences in European art of the period.
