Perspective on Curved Surfaces in the Age of Pozzo: The Nuova Pratica di Prospettiva of Paolo Amato

2016

The study focuses an almost unknown treatise on perspective, The Nuova Pratica di Prospettiva, written by the priest Paolo Amato (1634–1714) in the last years of his life and published posthumously in 1733. The main points of interest of the Nuova Pratica is the perspective projection on cylindrical surfaces, which exceeds the coeval ‘practical’ treatises on perspective. A detailed resume of Amato’s treatise is accompanied by geometric schemes illustrating the perspective method proposed by the author. None of the paintings made by Amato has come down to us, but the vault covering a hall added to a Norman church in Palermo shows a trompe l’oeil that was painted by one of his favorite discip…

‘Una myga ymatge en paper, de ploma, de mà de Johannes‘. La fugitiva sombra de Van Eyck en la Corona de Aragón a mediados del si…

2016

This paper analyses the mention of a quill drawing attributed to Van Eyck in a Valencian postmortem inventory, dated 1452. The properties belonged to Andreu Garcia, a priest well known in the historical record because of his connections with the most notable artists working in Valencia during the first half of the 15 th century. This reference compels a new examination of the ever more improbable presence of Van Eyck in Aragonese territories. It also offers a new insight into the early imprint of his paintings in these lands, given that the first owner of the drawing was the painter Berenguer Mateu (Jaume Mateu’s brother, likewise a prominent Valencian painter).

Sobre Herrera «El Viejo»

1996

In this article we introduce to the public knowledge a new collection of works by Francisco de Herrera, el Viejo, unknown until now, that enlarge considerably his catalogue. Within them we point out a set of architectural preparatory drawings for the gypsum-klin (yeserías) of the Convento de Santa Buenaventura in Sevilla, and also the discovery one architect's notebook that shows an important series of Sevillian designs. At the same time, we remark different aspects of his formation as painter, mentioning the possible influence of Pablo de Céspedes and some flemish masters like Martin de Vos, and we allude to the contacts, not referred until the present day, with Ribera and the young Alonso…

On the nature of the background behind Mona Lisa

2015

One of the many questions surrounding Leonardo’s Mona Lisa concerns the landscape visible in the portrait’s background: Does it depict an imagination of Leonardo’s mind, a real world landscape or the motif of a plane canvas that hung in Leonardo’s studio, behind the sitter? By analyzing divergences between the Mona Lisa and her Prado double that was painted in parallel but from another perspective the authors found mathematical evidence for the motif-canvas hypothesis: The landscape in the Prado version is 10% increased but otherwise nearly identical with the Louvre one, which indicates both painters used the same plane motif-canvas as reference.

Miguel del Prado, pintor de retablos en Valencia. Su fallecimiento en las Germanías (1521)

2017

Miguel del Prado, a painter who formed a company with Miguel Esteve in order to paint the now-lost Valencia town hall chapel in 1519, is an artist for whom there is scant documentary evidence. He has been identified with the anonymous Master of the Grifo, but this has been questioned recently. The author here offers news of a contract given to del Prado for an altarpiece in the Rosary Chapel of the old convent of Santo Domingo in Valencia that he was unable to fulfill due to his untimely death. It has been possible to certify that he perished on the battlefield of Almenara during the Germanias Revolt of 1521. Therefore the chronology for this painter has now been reduced by more than 16 yea…

Los Padres de la Iglesia de Joaquín Oliet y la obra de Francisco de Goya

2008

The painter from Castellón, Joaquin Oliet Cruellas, carried out prolific mural decorations for various churches in Valencia, Alicante and Castellón in which his intense visual culture is evident. Especially interesting are the series of Fathers of the Latin Church painted for several of these churches, which display, with variants, compositions identical to those attributed to Francisco de Goya in Calatayud, Muel and Remolinos.

El pintor castellonense Joaquín Oliet Cruella realizó para diversas parroquias valencianas, castellonenses y alicantinas una prolífica decoración mural, en la que es palpable una intensa cultura visual. Lung myofibroblasts are characterized by down-regulated cyclooxygenase-2 and its main metabolite, prostaglandin E2.

2013

Background: Prostaglandin E2 (PGE(2)), the main metabolite of cyclooxygenase (COX), is a well-known anti-fibrotic agent. Moreover, myofibroblasts expressing alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA), fibroblast expansion and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) are critical to the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Our aim was to investigate the expression of COX-2 and PGE(2) in human lung myofibroblasts and establish whether fibroblast-myofibroblast transition (FMT) and EMT are associated with COX-2 and PGE(2) down-regulation. Methods: Fibroblasts obtained from IPF patients (n = 6) and patients undergoing spontaneous pneumothorax (control, n = 6) and alveolar epithelial ce…

Involvement of distal airways in a chronic model of experimental asthma.

2005

Summary Background Bronchial asthma is characterized by chronic airway inflammation and airway remodelling which occurs in both proximal and distal airways. These changes are associated with development of airway hyper-responsiveness and airflow limitation. Objective This study was aimed to analyse whether chronic inhalative allergen challenges in mice lead to morphological and physiological changes comparable with this phenotype. Methods For this purpose, BALB/c mice were systemically sensitized to ovalbumin (OVA) followed by aerosol allergen challenges on 2 consecutive days per week for 12 weeks. Results In chronically challenged mice, tissue inflammation in proximal as well as distal air…

SPARC oppositely regulates inflammation and fibrosis in bleomycin-induced lung damage.

2011

Fibrosis results from inflammatory tissue damage and impaired regeneration. In the context of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis, we demonstrated that the matricellular protein termed secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) distinctly regulates inflammation and collagen deposition, depending on its cellular origin. Reciprocal Sparc(-/-) and wild-type (WT) bone marrow chimeras revealed that SPARC expression in host fibroblasts is required and sufficient to induce collagen fibrosis in a proper inflammatory environment. Accordingly, Sparc(-/-) >WT chimeras showed exacerbated inflammation and fibrosis due to the inability of Sparc(-/-) macrophages to down-regulate tumor necrosis …
