Nutriential Hazards: Micronutrients: Vitamins and Minerals
2014
To achieve an appropriate and healthy dietary regime, it is necessary to have a balance diet with an adequate contribution of every nutrient. Micronutrients play a fundamental role for normal metabolic functioning of human body, so their deficiencies produce specific clinical manifestations as well as a wide range of non-specific physiological impairments. Under certain situations or physiological conditions (such as stress, smoking, pollution, drugs and alcohol consumption, pregnancy, lactation, etc.), nutrient requirements are even higher, being impossible to fulfill them with standard diets. In fact, over two-third of the world's population lack of one or more essential mineral elements …
Revalorization of Almond By-Products for the Design of Novel Functional Foods: An Updated Review
2021
The search for waste minimization and the valorization of by-products are key to good management and improved sustainability in the food industry. The great production of almonds, based on their high nutritional value as food, especially almond kernels, generates tons of waste yearly. The remaining parts (skin, shell, hulls, etc.) are still little explored, even though they have been used as fuel by burning or as livestock feed. The interest in these by-products has been increasing, as they possess beneficial properties, caused by the presence of different bioactive compounds, and can be used as promising sources of new ingredients for the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry. Additio…
Ville et fortifications : de l'héritage à la production du territoire urbain
2015
A large number of french cities host military historical edifices (citadels, barracks, bastions, defensive walls, etc.). Although their initial defensive functions have been lost over time, these edifices remain deeply rooted in the urban fabric of their host cities. They continue exerting an impact on these cities’ urban morphology and modern-time functions as well as the way in which the concept of city is understood. Cities nowadays face some new challenges, the increasing awareness of urban sprawl and its consequences, coupled with an urge to promote a renewed and sustainable urbanism, invites us to adopt new approaches to study urban fortifications. In addition to their symbolic aspect,…

Fortification of milk with calcium: effect on calcium bioavailability and interactions with iron and zinc.
2006
Calcium solubility, dialysability, and transport and uptake (retention + transport) by Caco-2 cells as indicators of calcium bioavailability have been estimated in the in vitro gastrointestinal digests of milk and calcium fortified milk. A significant linear correlation (p < 0.05) was obtained between calcium uptake and the amount of soluble calcium added to the cells, and also between percentage calcium uptake and the calcium measured in the analyzed samples. The solubility, dialysis, transport, and uptake values are higher (p < 0.05) for calcium fortified milks than for nonfortified milks; that is, calcium fortification increases not only calcium content but also its bioavailability. An i…
Chapter 6: Iron fortification of milk and dairy products
2013
International audience; Anaemia is a worldwide health problem, mainly due to the low availability of iron in food products. The bioavailability of heme iron is far greater than the one of non-heme iron. Dairy products consumed together with iron-rich food decrease the availability of iron but the competition between calcium and iron ions is not clear. Iron is naturally present in milk under the form of lactoferrin, but lactoferrin may undergo thermal denaturation during process. Iron salts, cheaper than lactoferrin, are preferably used to fortify dairy products. The bioavailability of iron depends on the solubility and the dissociation constant of the salts. To administer iron as a medicine…
L’habitat perché du Malpas à Soyons (Ardèche) durant l’Antiquité tardive : état des données
2023
International audience; Recent excavations carried out between 2011-2016 in the ancient and medieval town of Soyons (Ardèche), located in the middle Rhône valley, in the territory of the roman colony of Valence, provide us new data on the occupation of the hilltop of Le Malpas. The study of the fortification of the Iron age has revealed the existence of a rampart built during the 3rd century AD. At this time, the lower city, under the actual village, is gradually abandoned. After a probable hiatus during the 4th century AD, the hilltop and the lower city grew again during the 5th and the 6th century AD. The late antique artefacts discovered in all the trenches dug on the Malpas let us assume…
