The Halfmoon Sign

SUMMARY The halfmoon-sign is described. It consists of typically shaped fragments seen on the lateral view of the elbow in the area around the fossa radialis. With rare exceptions, the halfmoon sign is indicative of fracture of the distal humerus in the coronal plane, most commonly involving the capitulum humeri.

Condylar distances in hypermobile temporomandibular joints of patients with excessive mouth openings by using computed tomography

The aim of this study was to compare the position and distances of the head of condyle to glenoid fossa in TMJs of healthy individuals and patients with mild, moderate and severe TMJ hypermobility. Virtual temporal bone: an interactive 3-dimensional learning aid for cranial base surgery.

OBJECTIVE: We have developed an interactive virtual model of the temporal bone for the training and teaching of cranial base surgery. METHODS: The virtual model was based on the tomographic data of the Visible Human Project. The male Visible Human's computed tomographic data were volumetrically reconstructed as virtual bone tissue, and the individual photographic slices provided the basis for segmentation of the middle and inner ear structures, cranial nerves, vessels, and brainstem. Background  We report the rare case of an adult transsphenoidal meningoencephalocele and outline the microneurosurgical strategy. Malignant teratoma in Klippel-Feil syndrome: a case report and review of the literature

Introduction: Klippel-Feil syndrome is characterized by a congenital fusion of cervical vertebrae. Intracranial teratomas are nongerminomatous germ cell tumors and they account for 0.3 to 0.9% of all intracranial tumors. Teratomas with malignant transformation refer to lesions which give rise to malignant cancer of somatic type. The association between tumors of dermoid origin and Klippel-Feil malformation is extremely rare. Surgical treatment of posterior fossa tumors in infancy and childhood: techniques and results

In a collective of 72 children with tumors of the posterior fossa, the preoperative diagnosis, operation planning and performance, and use of additional procedures, like the preliminary ventricular drainage and interventriculostomy are described. The extent of intra- and postoperative complications is given. Postoperative lethality was 0% in the group operated on between 1979 and 1991. The responsible factors are discussed. The findings support the opinion of ALBRIGHT (1989) that the prognosis for such patients is most promising in the hands of a specialist in pediatric neurosurgery.

Abstract: Purpose: Mullerian duct remnants (MDRs) are present in a male pseudohermaphroditic form characterized by failure of the mullerian duct to regress due to insufficient production or peripheral action of mullerian inhibiting substance. The MDR can be asymptomatic but it often results in infections, stones and voiding troubles. Furthermore, it may develop into a neoplasm. Objectives/Hypothesis: Spontaneous nasal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula represents a rare clinical entity. The possible etiology and the localization of the rhinorrhea remain an ongoing clinical challenge. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the localization of spontaneous CSF fistula and to correlate it with anatomical studies.
