Questioning the Images of Atrocity: An Introduction

The images of atrocity, either analog or digital, are always the trace of an encounter between the gaze of a photographer or a cameraman and a human being suffering from the painful effects of man-made violence. The archive images resulting from such an encounter raise some inevitable questions: who took them and for what purpose? Is it possible to retrace the process that led to these shots? What do they hide behind what the eye can see? Purpose: To compare the ocular anterior chamber depth, white-to-white distance, anterior chamber angle, and pupil diameter, as measured with two different Scheimpflug imaging devices. Methods: This transversal study included 80 right eyes from 80 subjects aged from 20 to 40 years. Their spherical equivalents ranged from -4.25 to +1.00 diopters (D). Each eye's anterior chamber depth, white-to-white distance, anterior chamber angle, and pupil diameter, were measured for far vision using both the Galilei G4 (double Scheimpflug camera) and the Pentacam HR (single Scheimpflug camera) systems. L'attualità delle riflessioni condotte in questo volume, uscito nell'edizione originale inglese nel 1993 e tradotto in italiano solamente nel 2008, è oggi più che mai evidente. Gli epitesti del film Lolita di Kubrick nel suturare il fuori-tempo e il fuori-campo mettono in campo un immaginario che attinge al doppio versante della riconoscibilità dei generi cinematografici e all’intorno scandalistico e pulsionale che attiene al pre-testo letterario.
