Self-care and total care: the twofold return of care in twentieth-century thought

2020

The paper studies two fundamentally different forms in which the concept of care makes its comeback in twentieth-century thought. We make use of a distinction made by Peter Sloterdijk, who argues that the ancient and medieval ‘ascetic’ ideal of self-enhancement through practice has re-emerged in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, particularly in the form of a rehabilitation of the Hellenistic notion of self-care (epimeleia heautou) in Michel Foucault’s late ethics. Sloterdijk contrasts this return of self-care with Martin Heidegger’s concept of being-in-the-world as ‘total care’ (Sorge), an utterly ‘secularized’ understanding of the human being as irreducibly world-embedded that reject…

Search for scalar leptoquarks from Z$^0$ decays

1992

We have searched for pair produced scalar leptoquarks each decaying to a quark and a charged lepton in a sample of 116 000 hadronic Z0 events produced at LEP. No candidate was detected and cross section and branching ratio limits are set for the above process at 95% CL. Mass limits are found to be about 42 GeV/c2 depending only slightly on the models used and a coupling times branching ratio exclusion line is drawn for a scalar leptoquark with a free coupling. We have also probed the mass region above 45 GeV/c2 for a singly produced scalar leptoquark and set limits on the cross section and the coupling lambda(2)/4-pi up to 60 GeV.

Kobiety a neoliberalna biopolityka. Przypadek polskich reality shows

2021

Drugi rozdział omawia show randkowe, Hotel Paradise i Love Island. Wyspa Miłości, poruszając zagadnienia seksu i miłości.

Richard von Rorty va alla guerra contro i filosofi

2012

The article shows how Clausewitz’s reflections on the nature of war can help us to understand the place of Richard Rorty in contemporary philosophical debate. Rorty’s postmetaphysical philosophy is thought to be an attack against the basic idea that reality ought to correspond to the ideals described by philosophers. Pragmatist tradition allows Rorty to consider philosophy not as epistemology but as a continuous intellectual autobiography.

SARS and human rights in a postmodern context : a case study of Toronto

2008

This pro gradu-thesis studies the conflict between human rights and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The thesis focuses on the events that took place in Toronto between February and June 2003. The theoretical focus is placed within postmodern tradition and the main contributors for the theoretical approach in this work are Michel Foucault and Georgio Agamben. Especially the concept of biopolitics and politics of the state of exception are closely analysed. The key aspect of this thesis is in the temporality of human rights and the events that lead to revoking those rights. A great emphasis is placed on describing the interdependence between human rights and citizenship. In addition…
