On-line database of voltammetric data of immobilized particles for identifying pigments and minerals in archaeometry, conservation and restoration (E…

2016

[EN] A web-based database of voltammograms is presented for characterizing artists' pigments and corrosion products of ceramic, stone and metal objects by means of the voltammetry of immobilized particles methodology. Description of the website and the database is provided. Voltammograms are, in most cases, accompanied by scanning electron microphotographs, X-ray spectra, infrared spectra acquired in attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy mode (ATR-FTIR) and diffuse reflectance spectra in the UV-Vis-region. For illustrating the usefulness of the database two case studies involving identification of pigments and a case study describing deterioration of an archae…

A FTIR study on low hydration saccharide amorphous matrices: Thermal behaviour of the Water Association Band

2011

Abstract We report a study on the thermal behaviour of the infrared Water Association Band (WAB) in dry binary saccharide–water systems (containing trehalose, sucrose, maltose, and raffinose). This is a follow-up of preceding studies on analogous carboxymyoglobin-saccharide–water ternary systems, which pointed out a mutual protein-matrix influence (coupling). A comparison between binary and ternary systems, for all the saccharides studied, evidences a reduction in the residual water content in the latter and, except for trehalose, a sizable modification in the thermal behaviour, which is discussed in terms of structure and hydrogen bonding properties of the sugars. The study allowed us also…

Off-axis focal shift for rotationally nonsymmetric screens

2009

We report on an analytical formulation for evaluating the amplitude distribution along any line directed toward the geometrical focus of a spherical wave front that passes through a rotationally nonsymmetric diffracting screen. Our formula consists of two factors. The first factor involves the one-dimensional Fourier transform of the projection of the screen function onto the off-axis line. The second factor depends on the inverse distance to the screen and permits us to recognize the existence of focal shift along off-axis lines.

Phase-shifting Gabor holography.

2009

We present a modified Gabor-like setup able to recover the complex amplitude distribution of the object wavefront from a set of inline recorded holograms. The proposed configuration is characterized by the insertion of a condenser lens and a spatial light modulator (SLM) into the classical Gabor configuration. The phase shift is introduced by the SLM that modulates the central spot (dc term) in an intermediate plane, without an additional reference beam. Experimental results validate the proposed method and produce superior results to the Gabor method.

Characterization of the human visual system threshold performance by a weighting function in the Gabor domain

1997

Abstract As evidenced by many physiological and psychophysical reports, the receptive fields of the first-stage set of mechanisms of the visual process fit to two-dimensional (2D) compactly supported harmonic functions. The application of this set of band-pass filter functions to the input signal implies that the visual system carries out some kind of conjoint space/spatial frequency transform. Assuming that a conjoint transform is carried out, we present in this paper a new characterization of the visual system performance by means of a weighting function in the conjoint domain. We have called this weighting function (in the particular case of the Gabor transform) the Gabor stimuli Sensiti…

Integrating analytical resolutions in non-targeted wine metabolomics

2015

Direct injection Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS), and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS) were combined for the non-targeted analysis of wine metabolites. The unrivalled resolution on mass measurement allowed by the former and the separation ability of isomeric and isobaric substances by the latter, clearly increases the scope of detectable unknown metabolites in wines. Such methodology is illustrated through the comparison of chemical spaces of a young and an older Pinot noir wine. RP and HILIC chromatography could reveal up to five isomers for a given mass, throughout the explored mass range. CHO, CHOS …

Expressing forest origins in the chemical composition of cooperage oak woods and corresponding wines by using FTICR-MS.

2008

A non-targeted, ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometric, direct analysis of oak-wood extracts from two species (Quercus robur L. and Quercus petraea Liebl.) from three French forests, and of a wine aged in barrels derived therefrom has been performed to identify families of metabolites that could discriminate both the species and the geographical origin of woods. From 12 T ultra-high-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectra of wood extracts, hundreds of mass signals were identified as possible significant biomarkers of the two species, with phenolic and carbohydrate moieties leading the differentiation between Q. robur and Q. petraea, respectively, as corroborated …

Bio-inspired consolidants derived from crystalline nanocellulose for decayed wood

2018

Abstract Novel bio-inspired materials derived from crystalline nanocellulose (CNC) have been tested as wood consolidants. A suspension of CNC, produced by acid hydrolysis of cellulose and used as such or mixed with lignin and/or siloxane derivatives (PDMS), was applied on rotted wood samples of Norway spruce. X-Ray diffraction analysis on CNC powder showed high crystallinity index. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement indicated a nearly uniform particle size distribution with an average hydrodynamic diameter for pure CNC smaller than that in the mixtures. Raman and FTIR spectroscopies suggested interactions between lignin, PDMS and CNC components. The storage modulus of wood samples, …

Ray matrix analysis of anamorphic fractional Fourier systems

2006

In this work we extend the application of the ray matrix approach to analyse anamorphic fractional Fourier systems, i.e., fractional Fourier optical systems where the fractional power is different for two orthogonal directions. The application of the ray matrix approach allows for easily obtaining the properties of the optical system, and it is therefore a powerful tool to design and simplify complicated systems. For simplicity we consider fractional Fourier systems with real orders and systems without apertures. We start by presenting the analysis of some previously reported anamorphic Fourier and fractional Fourier systems, and we end by proposing a simple optical system with tunable anam…
