Effects of Nebivolol versus Carvedilol on Left Ventricular Function in Patients with Chronic Heart Failure and Reduced Left Ventricular Systolic Func…

2006

Beta-adrenoceptor antagonist (beta-blocker) therapy results in a significant improvement in left ventricular (LV) systolic function and prognosis in patients with chronic heart failure. Both carvedilol and nebivolol produce hemodynamic and clinical benefits in chronic heart failure, but it is unknown whether their peculiar pharmacologic properties produce different effects on LV function. To assess the effects on LV function of nebivolol compared with carvedilol in patients with chronic heart failure and reduced LV systolic function.Seventy patients with a LV ejection fractionor=40% and in New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class II or III were randomly assigned to receive carvedil…

Correlation between non-invasive myocardial work indices and main parameters of systolic and diastolic function

2020

Abstract Aims The present study sought to evaluate the correlation between indices of non-invasive myocardial work (MW) and left ventricle (LV) size, traditional and advanced parameters of LV systolic and diastolic function by 2D echocardiography (2DE). Methods and results A total of 226 (85 men, mean age: 45 ± 13 years) healthy subjects were enrolled at 22 collaborating institutions of the Normal Reference Ranges for Echocardiography (NORRE) study. Global work index (GWI), global constructive work (GCW), global work waste (GWW), and global work efficiency (GWE) were estimated from LV pressure-strain loops using custom software. Peak LV pressure was estimated non-invasively from brachial ar…

The Advantages of Type III Scaphoid Nonunion Advanced Collapse (SNAC) Treatment With Partial Carpal Arthrodesis in the Dominant Hand: Results of 5-ye…

2018

Introduction The SNAC wrist (Scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse) is one of the complications following scaphoid fractures treated conservatively and one of the causes of wrist arthritis that the hand surgeon has to face most frequently. In these cases surgical management is usually warranted. Materials and methods In the set time frame of 6 years we treated 15 SNAC wrist cases. On average patients underwent surgery five years after the trauma. All patients were treated via dorsal incision with partial carpal arthrodesis and total scaphoidectomy, associated with denervation of the posterior interosseous nerves. A plaster cast was applied to all patients for 3 weeks postoperatively. In the p…

Rapid Musculoskeletal Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using Integrated Parallel Acquisition Techniques (IPAT) - Initial Experiences

2003

Purpose To investigate the feasibility of using multiple receiver coil elements for time saving integrated parallel imaging techniques (iPAT) in traumatic musculoskeletal disorders. Material and methods 6 patients with traumatic derangements of the knee, ankle and hip underwent MR imaging at 1.5 T. For signal detection of the knee and ankle, we used a 6-channel body array coil that was placed around the joints, for hip imaging two 4-channel body array coils and two elements of the spine array coil were combined for signal detection. All patients were investigated with a standard imaging protocol that mainly consisted of different turbo spin-echo sequences (PD-, T (2)-weighted TSE with and w…

Influence of perioperative dexamethasone on delayed union in mandibular fractures: a clinical and radiological study

2014

Background: The aim was to clarify the occurrence of delayed union after surgical treatment of mandibular fracture and investigate whether an association exists between perioperative use of dexamethasone and delayed union. Material and Methods: Thirty-seven patients were included in a prospective randomized study. Of these patients, 19 (51.4%) were randomized to receive a total dose of 30 mg of dexamethasone and 18 (48.6%) served as controls. Patients underwent clinical and radiological investigation immediately, one month, three months and six months postoperatively. Radiographs were evaluated by an experienced, blinded senior oral radiologist. Results: Delayed fracture union was found in …

Symptoms of adjustment disorder and smoking predict long-term functional outcome after ankle and lower leg fracture

2020

Objective To examine the psychological, social, behavioural and injury-related factors impacting functional outcome in patients with ankle or lower limb fracture one year post-operation. Methods In this prospective study 66 patients with ankle or lower leg fracture were recruited and followed up one year post-operation. Possible associations between predictors and functional outcome were explored by regression analyses. Functional outcome was assessed with the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Ankle-Hindfoot Score. Results Linear regression models revealed that smoking and elevated symptoms of adjustment disorder were associated with lower functional outcome one year post-operation…

Endothelial cell loss after toric iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens implantation: three-year follow-up.

2007

ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To study quantitative changes in endothelial cell count after implantation of the toric iris-fixated phakic intraocular lens. METHODS: A prospective, non-randomized, self-controlled clinical trial was conducted of 40 eyes (28 myopic, 12 hyperopic) of 23 patients with high ametropia and astigmatism. Non-contact computer-assisted endothelial microscopy was performed before and I1 2, and 3 years after surgery. RESULTS: In the myopic group, mean preoperative endothelial cell count was 3179±531 cells/mm p 2 (range: 1800 to 3900 cells/mm2). The mean intraindividual endothelial cell loss was -1.83±2.25% (range: -9.09% to 0%) in the first year; -1.83+2.95% (range: -7.74% to 3.80%)…

Long-term use of deferiprone significantly enhances left-ventricular ejection function in thalassemia major patients

2012

A multicenter randomized open-label long-term sequential deferiprone–deferoxamine (DFP-DFO) versus DFP alone trial (sequential DFP-DFO) performed in patients with thalassemia major (TM) was retrospectively reanalyzed to assess the variation in the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) [1].

Addition of rituximab to standard therapy improves response rate and progression-free survival in relapsed or refractory thrombotic thrombocytopenic …

2007

SummaryTreatment of relapsed or refractory autoimmune mediated haemolytic syndromes, such as autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), represents a therapeutic challenge. Here we report on our experience with the monoclonal anti-CD20 antibody rituximab (R) compared to standard treatment in these diseases. Patients with non-familialTTP orAIHA and no underlying malignancy were included in our analysis. Safety and efficacy of R-treatment were compared to results obtained in standard treatment approaches. Altogether, 27 patients were analyzed, comprising 15 patients withTTP and 12 patients with AIHA. The patients’ average age at the time of diagnosis wa…
