Deuterium hyperfine splittings in the rotational spectrum of NH2D as revealed by Lamb-dip spectroscopy

2020

Abstract In the context of radio-astronomical observations, laboratory experiments constitute a cornerstone in the interpretation of rich line surveys due to the concomitant presence of numerous emitting molecules. Here, we report the investigation of three different rotational transitions of mono-deuterated ammonia (NH2D), a species of astrophysical interest, for which the contribution of the deuterium nuclear spin to the rotational spectrum has been resolved for the first time in the millimeter- and submillimeter-wave domain. The effect of hyperfine interactions on the rotational spectrum has been unveiled by a combined theoretical and experimental approach. Quantum-chemical calculations …

Modelling fractionation of stable isotopes in stalagmites

2009

Abstract High resolution δ13C and δ18O profiles recorded in precisely dated speleothems are widely used proxies for the climate of the past. Both δ13C and δ18O depend on several climate related effects including meteorological processes, processes occurring in the soil zone above the cave and isotope fractionation processes occurring in the solution layer on the stalagmite surface. Here we model the latter using a stalagmite isotope and growth model and determine the relationship between the stable isotope values in speleothem calcite and cave parameters, such as temperature, drip interval, water p CO 2 and a mixing coefficient describing mixing processes between the solution layer and the …

D/H ratios of methoxyl groups of the sedimentary organic matter of Lake Holzmaar (Eifel, Germany): A potential palaeoclimate/-hydrology proxy

2014

Stable hydrogen isotope ratios (dD values) of methoxyl groups in lignin and pectin from a variety of plant types from different locations have been shown to mirror dD values of precipitation, with a mean uniform isotopic fractionation. Since dD in precipitation is mainly influenced by climatic conditions, including temperature, evaporation and precipitation amount, methoxyl groups of organic matter have been proposed as a potential palaeoclimate proxy. Here, we measured the dD values of the methoxyl groups of sedimentary organic matter derived from sediment core segments of Lake Holzmaar (Eifel, Germany). The sediment core covers the entire Holocene and part of the Late Glacial (until 13,65…

Isotope disequilibrium effects: The influence of evaporation and ventilation effects on the carbon and oxygen isotope composition of speleothems – A …

2012

Abstract In order to improve the understanding of variations of speleothem δ18O and δ13C values in the context of palaeoclimate research, it is important to quantify the isotope fractionation processes influencing the δ18O and δ13C values of stalagmites. Here we present an extended version of speleothem stable isotope model that accounts for evaporation and condensation effects during precipitation of calcite. The ISOLUTION-model allows to calculate the effect of evaporation on δ18Ocalcite and δ13Ccalcite values in dependence on relative humidity and wind velocity. Our results reveal that evaporation may have a significant effect on δ18Ocalcite and δ13Ccalcite due to the loss of H2O from th…

Moderate hypofractionated helical tomotherapy for localized prostate cancer: preliminary report of an observational prospective study.

2019

Objective: To report preliminary findings of a phase II study exploring the clinical outcomes of moderate hypofractionated radiotherapy performed with helical tomotherapy (HT) using computed tomography–magnetic resonance imaging–based planning for localized prostate cancer. Methods: The phase II prospective study received ethics approval from our institutional ethics committee. A dose of 60 Gy/20 fractions for low–intermediate risk prostate cancer by means of HT was explored. Primary endpoints of the study were acute and late gastrointestinal (GI) and genitourinary (GU) toxicities. Secondary endpoints were quality of life and biochemical-free survival. Results: A total of 35 patients were i…

Isomerism of [64Cu-NOTA-Bn]-labeled radiotracers: separation of two complex isomers and determination of their interconversion energy barrier using i…

2011

The model complex [(64)Cu((S)-p-NH(2)-Bn-NOTA)](-) ([(64)Cu]1) was used to study the isomerism of [(64)Cu-NOTA-Bn]-labeled radiotracers. Two complex isomers [(64)Cu]1a and [(64)Cu]1b, which were formed at a ratio of 1:9 during the complexation of [(64)Cu]Cu(2+) with (S)-p-NH(2)-Bn-NOTA, were separated using ion pair chromatography. To study the interconversion, the nonradioactive complex isomers Cu1a and Cu1b were separated and thermally treated at 90 °C in both ammonium acetate solution and deionized water. A faster interconversion rate was observed for both isomers with lower concentrations of ammonium ions. At the end of reaction, the thermodynamic Cu1a to Cu1b equilibrium ratio was 6:94…

Zr- Hf Fractionation During Water-Rock Interaction

2017

International audience; Zr and Hf are two elements having same ionic charge and similar ionic size at a given coordination number. Despite the Zr/Hf ratio is considered to be quite constant in meteorites and lithospheric rocks, seawaters collected from the surface down to varying depths of several Pacific Ocean stations reveal that the Zr/Hf ratio increases by one order of magnitude. Very recent studies have shown that, in both ground waters and lake waters, the Zr/Hf ratio is either higher or lower compared to the interacting minerals displaying a large variability in the distribution of these twin elements. In this communication the possible processes responsible for such a large fraction…

Stable Cu and Zn isotope ratios as tracers of sources and transport of Cu and Zn in contaminated soil

2010

Abstract Copper and Zn metals are produced in large quantities for different applications. During Cu production, large amounts of Cu and Zn can be released to the environment. Therefore, the surroundings of Cu smelters are frequently metal-polluted. We determined Cu and Zn concentrations and Cu and Zn stable isotope ratios (δ 65 Cu, δ 66 Zn) in three soils at distances of 1.1, 3.8, and 5.3 km from a Slovak Cu smelter and in smelter wastes (slag, sludge, ash) to trace sources and transport of Cu and Zn in soils. Stable isotope ratios were measured by multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) in total digests. Soils were heavily contaminated with concentrations u…

CO2 degassing at La Solfatara volcano (Phlegrean Fields): Processes affecting and of soil CO2

2010

Abstract The soil CO2 degassing is affected by processes of isotope exchange and fractionation during transport across the soil, which can deeply modify the pristine isotope composition. This has been observed in the Solfatara volcano, upon a field survey of 110 points, where the CO2 flux was measured, together with temperature, CO2 concentration and oxygen and carbon isotopes within the soil. Furthermore, in some selected sites, the measurements were made at different depths, in order to analyze vertical gradients. Oxygen isotope composition appears controlled by exchange with soil water (either meteoric or fumarolic condensate), due to the fast kinetic of the isotopic equilibrium between …

Triple Isotope Fractionation Exponents of Elements Measured by MC-ICP-MS—An Example of Mg

2019

In most chemical reactions, stable isotopes are fractionated in a mass-dependent manner, yielding correlated isotope ratios in elements with three or more stable isotopes. The proportionality between isotope ratios is set by the triple isotope fractionation exponent θ that can be determined precisely for, e.g., sulfur and oxygen by IRMS, but not for metal(loid) elements due to the lower precision of MC-ICP-MS analysis and smaller isotopic variations. Here, using Mg as a test case, we compute a complete metrologically robust uncertainty budget for apparent θ values and, with reference to this, present a new measurement approach that reduces uncertainty on θ values by 30%. T…
