Is the Posterior Wall Avulsion the Simplest Acetabular Fracture?

2000

The posterior wall fracture – the most frequent acetabular lesion – is often regarded as the simplest acetabular fracture. In fact, a large variety of complex articular lesions is subsumed under this fracture type. A consecutive series of 60 posterior wall fractures is reviewed retrospectively. Lesions characteristics, treatment method, early and late postoperative complications a 2-year functional results were recorded. In 27 patients (45%), additional damage to the cartilage of the acetabular cavitiy such as subchondral impaction, free articular fragments of separation of the posterior wall into several pieces was present. Seven patients (11.6%) showed preoperative neurologic deficit. Sec…

Infrared thermal imaging in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal injuries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

2014

OBJECTIVE. Musculoskeletal injuries occur frequently. Diagnostic tests using ionizing radiation can lead to problems for patients, and infrared thermal imaging could be useful when diagnosing these injuries. CONCLUSION. A systematic review was performed to determine the diagnostic accuracy of infrared thermal imaging in patients with musculoskeletal injuries. A meta-analysis of three studies evaluating stress fractures was performed and found a lack of support for the usefulness of infrared thermal imaging in musculoskeletal injuries diagnosis.

Stress fractures in elite male football players

2010

The objective was to investigate the incidence, type and distribution of stress fractures in professional male football players. Fifty-four football teams, comprising 2379 players, were followed prospectively for 189 team seasons during the years 2001-2009. Team medical staff recorded individual player exposure and time-loss injuries. The first team squads of 24 clubs selected by UEFA as belonging to the 50 best European teams, 15 teams of the Swedish Super League and 15 teams playing their home matches on artificial turf pitches were included. In total, 51 stress fractures occurred during 1,180,000 h of exposure, giving an injury incidence of 0.04 injuries/1000 h. A team of 25 players can …

Subperiosteal Aneurysmal Bone Cyst Located in the Fifth Metatarsal Shaft in a 13 Year-Old Girl

2010

Abstract Objective We present s a case of aneurysmal bone cyst, unusual and rare, both for its location and its initial clinical and radiographic presentation. Case report A girl of 13 years consulting for atraumatic pain in the outer edge of right foot, with a normal initial X-ray and then one month later presented with a subperiosteal tumour lesion in the fifth metatarsal shaft, which was definitively diagnosed as an aneurysmal bone cyst, Campanacci type IV. Conclusions There are few cases in the literature of aneurysmal bone cyst with these characteristics. Such lesions may pose significant diagnostic difficulties with other pathologies, such as tumours, stress fractures or infections, d…

Ultrasound-guided spinal fracture repositioning

1998

The management of narrowing spinal fragments in the operative treatment of spinal fractures remains an open question, in particular when the procedure is performed by a posterior approach. This article describes the use of intraoperative ultrasonography during spinal surgery. From 1990 to 1997, 116 spinal fractures were treated operatively at our clinic. Stabilization of the spine was achieved with the AO fixateur interne and the AO USS, respectively (Synthes, D-79224, Umkirch, Germany). For 60 cases who had a fractured posterior vertebral surface dislocated into the spinal canal, we used intraoperative ultrasonography to monitor the repositioning of the narrowing fragments. The patients un…

Duration of breastfeeding as a risk factor for vertebral fractures

2014

Abstract Purpose Among the risk factors for osteoporosis and fractures, gynecological history (fertile period, parity and breastfeeding) play an important part. Changes in calcium metabolism to enable an adequate mineral transfer to the milk have a prominent role in bone loss during breastfeeding. Data on the influence of breastfeeding in postmenopausal osteoporosis are inconsistent. The aim of the present study was to identify any association between duration of breastfeeding and vertebral fractures in postmenopausal women. Methods All patients underwent the following tests: bone mineral density measurements of the lumbar spine (L1–L4) and the total and femoral neck using dual-energy X-ray…

The incidence of hip fractures in Norway –accuracy of the national Norwegian patient registry

2014

Background Hip fractures incur the greatest medical costs of any fracture. Valid epidemiological data are important to monitor for time-dependent changes. In Norway, hip fractures are registered in the Norwegian Patient Registry (NPR), but no published national validation exists. The aim of the present study was a national validation of NPR as a register for hip fractures using diagnostic codes (ICD-10 S 72.0-2) and/or procedure codes (NOMESCO version 1.14 NFBxy (x = 0-9, y = 0-2) or NFJxy (x = 0-9, y = 0-2). Method A nationwide, population-based cohort comprising a random sub-sample of 1,000 hip fracture-related entries for the years 2008–09 was drawn from the NPR. 200 entries were defined…

Spontanfrakturen im Säuglingsalter durch Kupfermangel

1989

A preterm infant of 25 weeks’ gestation developed at 4 months of age an “impressed” fracture of the right femur. In another preterm infant of 27 weeks’ gestation, multiple fractures of the radius and metacarpalia were observed at age 5 months. Also a full term twin showed multiple rib fractures. Additional radiological findings were: generalized skeletal osteopenia, cupping and fraying of the metaphyses of the long bones, and subperiosteal new bone formation. Further symptoms were repeated apnoic attacks, anemia, neutropenia, and low serum levels of both copper and coeruloplasmin. Alimentary copper deficiency was diagnosed and oral copper substitution (CuCl2 1,2–2,0 µmol/kg/d) initiated. Th…

Metastatic Versus Osteoporotic Vertebral Fractures on MRI: A Blinded, Multicenter, and Multispecialty Observer Agreement Evaluation.

2020

Background: MRI is assumed to be valid for distinguishing metastatic vertebral fractures (MVFs) from osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs). This study assessed (1) concordance between the image-based diagnosis of MVF versus OVF and the reference (biopsy or follow-up of >6 months), (2) interobserver and intraobserver agreement on key imaging findings and the diagnosis of MVF versus OVF, and (3) whether disclosing a patient’s history of cancer leads to variations in diagnosis, concordance, or agreement. Patients and Methods: This retrospective cohort study included clinical data and imaging from 203 patients with confirmed MVF or OVF provided to 25 clinicians (neurosurgeons, radiologists…

Ungewöhnlicher Verlauf von otobasalen Frakturen mit Liquorrhoe*

1993

In the literature the persistence of cerebrospinal Liquorrhea after temporal bone fractures is a rare event. Between 1989 and 1992 four cases of temporal bone fractures with dural involvement were operated at the University ENT Department Mainz. These temporal bone fractures showed delayed or persistent symptoms of dural lacerations between three and sixty months after head injury. During operation we found larger bone-dura defects (1-1.5 cm in diameter) and brain herniations in all cases. Strohm stated that only in rare cases a temporal bone fracture produced a larger gap in the tegmen tympani or antri. Therefore, we assumed that in our cases such larger bone-dura defects were caused by a …
