Designing Classroom Practices for Teaching Online Inquiry : Experiences from the Field
2021
Students face several challenges when asked to locate relevant and credible information from the internet. This article introduces three principles for designing online inquiry lessons and documents what we learned from five language arts teachers from Finland who implemented and provided feedback on a learning unit framed in those design principles. Teachers implemented a researcher-designed online inquiry unit in nine upper secondary school classrooms. The unit included four 75-minute lessons sequenced to support the location, evaluation, and synthesis of information students encountered in an online inquiry task. Teachers’ diaries revealed their impressions of the unit, problems encounte…
Metal-Organic Frameworks as Versatile Heterogeneous Solid Catalysts for Henry Reactions
2021
Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have become one of the versatile solid materials used for a wide range of applications, such as gas storage, gas separation, proton conductivity, sensors and catalysis. Among these fields, one of the more well-studied areas is the use of MOFs as heterogeneous catalysts for a broad range of organic reactions. In the present review, the employment of MOFs as solid catalysts for the Henry reaction is discussed, and the available literature data from the last decade are grouped. The review is organized with a brief introduction of the importance of Henry reactions and structural properties of MOFs that are suitable for catalysis. The second part of the review dis…
Sul controllo del meccanismo di collasso di controventi eccentrici
2007
The effectiveness of different non-linear static procedures, for the detection of the collapse mechanism of eccentric braced frames, is investigated. EBFs introduced into truss frame structures are considered. For such a typology of structures, plastic deformations are concen-trated in a single resistant element at each floor, greatly increasing the risk of the formation of soft storey mechanisms, even if the structure is designed according to the capacity design. The results of different non-linear static procedures are compared to those obtained by incremental dynamic non-linear analysis, considering a meaningful set of artificially generated stationary accelerograms, compatible with a ta…
Sensorless induction machine drive for fly-wheel generation unit based on a TLS-based non-linear observer
2016
This paper proposes a sensorless technique for an induction machine Flywheel Energy Storage System (FESS) based on a non-linear observer integrated with a total least-squares speed estimator taking into consideration the IM (Induction Machine) saturation effects. The nonlinear observer is based on an original formulation of the dynamic model of the IM including the magnetic saturation, rearranged in a space-state form, after assuming as state variables the stator current and the rotor magnetizing current space-vectors in the stator reference frame. The choice of the observer gain has been made by the use of Lyapunov's method. The speed signal needed by the non-linear observer for the flux e…
Clinical, pathologic, and genetic features of massive soft tissue neurofibromas in a Sicilian patient
2008
Abstract CONTEXT: Lipase maturation factor 1 (LMF1) gene is a novel candidate gene in severe hypertriglyceridemia. Lmf1 is involved in the maturation of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and hepatic lipase in endoplasmic reticulum. To date only one patient with severe hypertriglyceridemia and related disorders was found to be homozygous for a nonsense mutation in LMF1 gene (Y439X). OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to investigate LMF1 gene in hypertriglyceridemic patients in whom mutations in LPL, APOC2, and APOA5 genes had been excluded. RESULTS: The resequencing of LMF1 gene led to the discovery of a novel homozygous nonsense mutation in one patient with severe hypertriglyceridemia and rec…
How to standardize (if you must)
2017
In many situations we are interested in appraising the value of a certain characteristic for a given individual relative to the context in which this value is observed. In recent years this problem has become prominent in the evaluation of scientific productivity and impact. A popular approach to such relative valuations consists in using percentile ranks. This is a purely ordinal method that may sometimes lead to counterintuitive appraisals, in that it discards all information about the distance between the raw values within a given context. By contrast, this information is partly preserved by using standardization, i.e., by transforming the absolute values in such a way that, within the s…
Inertial modes in stratified rotating neutron stars : An evolutionary description
2005
With (non-barotropic) equations of state valid even when the neutron, proton and electron content of neutron star cores is not in beta equilibrium, we study inertial and composition gravity modes of relativistic rotating neutron stars. We solve the relativistic Euler equations in the time domain with a three dimensional numerical code based on spectral methods, in the slow rotation, relativistic Cowling and anelastic approximations. Principally, after a short description of the gravity modes due to smooth composition gradients, we focus our analysis on the question of how the inertial modes are affected by non-barotropicity of the nuclear matter. In our study, the deviation with respect to …
Development of the Jyväskylä microbeam facility
2012
Abstract A new microbeam facility is being constructed at the 1.7 MV Pelletron Accelerator in Jyvaskyla. The facility is designed for easy upgrading and incorporates a number of innovative features. Initially, it is based on a Heidelberg doublet with a design capability of a 3 × 5 μm beamspot at PIXE intensities and later upgraded to nanobeam performance. A thermal-expansion compensated rigid frame mounted on a mechanically isolated floor section is used to support the ion optical components. A compact-post focusing electrostatic deflector is used for high linearity beam scanning. This together with a novel time-stamped data collection (TDC) allows dynamic effects in IBIC, fluorescence blea…
Determination of |Vub|/|Vcb| with DELPHI at LEP
2001
The ratio of the CKM quark-mixing matrix elements |Vub|/|Vcb| has been measured using B hadron semileptonic decays. The analysis uses the reconstructed mass M_X of the secondary hadronic system produced in association with an identified lepton. Since B -> X_u lepton anti-nu transitions are characterised by hadronic masses below those of the D mesons produced in B -> X_c lepton anti-nu transitions, events with a reconstructed value of M_X significantly below the D mass are selected. Further signal enrichments are obtained using the topology of reconstructed decays and hadron identification. A fit to the numbers of decays in the b -> u enriched and depleted samples with M_X above and…
